The phenylfluorone method for tin analysis has been modified to be specific for organotin samples in the ppb and sub-ppb range (4-.1 micrograms of tin). Two extractions of an aqueous solution containing bis (tri-n-butyltin) oxide (TBTO) and tin sulfate yield results which are quantitative for TBTO without interference from the tin sulfate. A series of organotin compounds obtained from the reaction of 2,6-diacetylpyridine nicotinoyl- and isonicotinoylhydrazones with tri- and diorganotin chlorides was investigated. Preincubation of coupled submitochondrial particles with low concentrations of triorganotin compounds results in complete inhibition of the oligomycin-sensitive ATPase activity without any significant effect on the rate of succinate-driven ATP synthesis. The residual ATP synthetic activity is inhibited by oligomycin and uncouplers. The differential inhibition of ATP synthesis and hydrolysis by the triorganotin compounds examined suggests that the two processes are not 'mirror images' of each other, but that they occur through different routes and that the F1F0-ATPase is at least bifunctional.

Organotin compounds (OTC), tri-, di- and monobutyl tin, were determined in the tissues of marbled electric ray (Torpedo marmorata) in the Adriatic Sea. A simultaneous determination method for 9 organotin compounds in polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and silicone products used as kitchen utensils and food packages was developed using ethyl derivatization with sodium tetraethylborate (NaBEt4). Organotin compounds were extracted with acetone-hexane (3:7) from the samples after acidification and the extract was filtered and concentrated at under 40 degrees C. From conversions of Ar2SnH2 (Ar = Tripp, Dipp; Tripp = 2,4,6-Triisopropylphenyl, Dipp = 2,6-Diisopropylphenyl), and a bismuth(III) amide, Bi[N(SiMe3)2]3, we isolated the first representatives of mixed, uncharged Bi/Sn clusters, Bi8Sn3Ar6. Along with unprecedented bicyclo[2.2.0]hexanes, (HAr2Sn)2Sn2Bi4, these have been characterized by single crystal X-Ray diffraction, heteronuclear NMR, vibrational and UV-Vis spectroscopy.
