Advanced optical imaging reveals preferred spatial orientation of podocyte processes along the axis of glomerular capillaries.

Mammalian kidneys filter enormous volumes of water and small solutes, a filtration driven by the hydrostatic pressure in glomerular capillaries, which is considerably higher than in most other tissues. Interdigitating cellular processes of podocytes form the slits for fluid filtration connected by the membrane-like slit diaphragm cell junction containing a mechanosensitive ion channel complex and allow filtration while counteracting hydrostatic pressure. Several previous publications speculated that podocyte processes may display a preferable orientation on glomerular capillaries instead of a

An accurate method of radiological assessment of acetabular volume and orientation in computed tomography spatial reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Two-dimensional (2D) measurements of acetabular morphology and orientation are well known; there is less information on these acetabular characteristics in three dimensions. One important reason is the lack of standardized reference planes for the pelvis, especially in relation to the spinopelvic unit; another is that no method precisely assesses the acetabulum in three-dimensional (3D) orientation based on its axis rather than on the directions of the edges of the acetabular rim. We present an objective, highly reliable and accurate, axis-based approach to acetabular anthropometry

A single exposure to the tremorgenic mycotoxin lolitrem B inhibits voluntary motor activity and spatial orientation but not spatial learning or memory in mice.

The indole diterpenoid toxin lolitrem B is a tremorgenic agent found in the common grass species, perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne). The toxin is produced by a symbiotic fungus Epichloë festucae (var. lolii) and ingestion of infested grass with sufficient toxin levels causes a movement disorder in grazing herbivores known as 'ryegrass staggers'. Beside ataxia, lolitrem B intoxicated animals frequently show indicators of cognitive dysfunction or exhibition of erratic and unpredictable behaviours during handling. Evidence from field cases in livestock and controlled feeding studies in horses h

Exploring the causal involvement of the rIPL and white matter interindividual variability in spatial orienting and consciousness.

BACKGROUND: Spatial attention enables the selection of relevant over irrelevant stimuli through dorsal and ventral fronto-parietal networks. These networks are connected through long white matter tracts, such as the superior longitudinal fasciculus (SLF) and the Inferior Fronto-Occipital fasciculus (IFOF). OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESIS: The main purpose of this study was to explore, in healthy participants, the causal role of the right Inferior Parietal Lobe (rIPL) in spatial orienting and conscious perception. We also explored how interindividual differences in the microstructural properties of white

The dorsal attention network mediates orienting toward behaviorally relevant stimuli in spatial neglect.

Experimental neurophysiology and functional neuroimaging have identified a dorsal attention network that encodes neural signals related to the behavioral significance of a stimulus. The core anatomical areas of this network are the frontal eye fields and the posterior parietal cortex, which are interconnected by the superior longitudinal fasciculus. Here, we show that damage or disconnection of this network predicts the extent to which task-relevant stimuli capture attention of human stroke patients with spatial neglect. Healthy volunteers, right-hemisphere-damaged control participants, and pa

Spatially-aware group interaction design framework for collaborative room-oriented immersive systems.

Room-oriented immersive systems are human-scale built environments that enable collective multi-sensory immersion in virtual space. Although such systems are currently seeing increasing applications in public realms, limited understanding remains regarding how humans interact with the virtual environments displayed within. Synthesizing virtual reality ergonomics and human-building interaction (HBI) knowledge allows us to investigate these systems meaningfully. In this work, we develop a model of content analysis based on hardware components of the Collaborative-Research Augmented Immersive Vir

Effect of transit-oriented design on pedestrian and cyclist safety using bivariate spatial models.

INTRODUCTION: Walking and cycling for transportation provide immense benefits (e.g., health, environmental, social). However, pedestrians and bicyclists are the most vulnerable segment of the traveling public due to the lack of protective structure and difference in body mass compared with motorized vehicles. Numerous studies are dedicated to enhancing active transportation modes, but very few studies are devoted to the safety analysis of the transit stops, which serve as the important modal interface for pedestrians and bicyclists. METHOD: This study bridges the gap by developing joint model

The nodulus and uvula: source of cerebellar control of spatial orientation of the angular vestibulo-ocular reflex.

The nodulus and rostral-ventral uvula of the vestibulo-cerebellum play a critical role in orienting eye velocity of the slow component of the angular vestibulo-ocular reflex (aVOR) to gravito-inertial acceleration (GIA). This is done by altering the time constants of "velocity storage" in the vestibular system and by generating "cross-coupled" eye velocities that shift the eye velocity vector from along the body yaw axis to the yaw axis in a spatial frame. In this report, we show that eye velocity generated through the aVOR by constant velocity centrifugation in the monkey orients to the GIA i

Deep sensorless tracking of ultrasound probe orientation during freehand transperineal biopsy with spatial context for symmetry disambiguation.

BACKGROUND: Diagnosis of prostate cancer requires histopathology of tissue samples. Following an MRI to identify suspicious areas, a biopsy is performed under ultrasound (US) guidance. In existing assistance systems, 3D US information is generally available (taken before the biopsy session and/or in between samplings). However, without registration between 2D images and 3D volumes, the urologist must rely on cognitive navigation. METHODS: This work introduces a deep learning model to track the orientation of real-time US slices relative to a reference 3D US volume using only image and volume

Styloid Jugular Nutcracker: The Possible Role of the Styloid Process Spatial Orientation-A Preliminary Morphometric Computed Study.

Styloid Jugular Nutcracker (SJN, also known as Eagle Jugular Syndrome EJS) derives from a jugular stenosis caused by an abnormal styloid process, compressing the vessel in its superior portion (J3) against the C1 anterior arch. It could be considered a venous vascular variant of Eagle Syndrome (ES). Main clinical features of this ES variant are headache, pulsatile tinnitus and dizziness, possibly related to venous hypertension and impaired cerebral parenchyma drainage. In our opinion, conceptually, it is not the absolute length of the styloid bone that defines its abnormality, but its spatial

The protective role of hearing aids on delayed recall and spatial orientation in age-related hearing loss.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) is a significant risk factor for cognitive decline that can be mitigated using hearing aids (HAs). This study investigated the impact of HAs on cognitive function in ARHL, specifically targeting delayed recall and spatial orientation, and identified the influencing factors using multivariate logistic regression. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study. A total of 104 ARHL patients from July 2023 to October 2025 were enrolled, dividing them into HA users (HA+ group, n = 47) and non-HA (HA- group, n = 57). The patients underwent audiolo

Spatial proximity or vector orientation? Re-evaluating ECG interpretation in anterior myocardial infarction using cardiac magnetic resonance.

BACKGROUND: The electrocardiogram (ECG) is widely used to infer infarct location and extent in anterior myocardial infarction (MI), based on either anatomical lead proximity or vectorial orientation of ST-segment deviation. However, the validity of these approaches against direct imaging of myocardial injury remains uncertain. METHODS: In this prospective study, 105 patients with anterior MI underwent cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging 3-7 days after presentation. Admission ECGs were analyzed using (1) conventional ECG localization categories, and (2) simplified frontal and horizontal S

Egocentric spatial orientation differences between Alzheimer's disease at early stages and mild cognitive impairment: a diagnostic aid.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a growing global crisis. Egocentric spatial orientation deteriorates with age and more significantly with AD. A simple and quick virtual reality (VR) localization and target finding technique is presented as a diagnostic aid to screen mild cognitive impairment (MCI) from AD. Spatial orientation data from 93 individuals (65 AD at a mild stage, 20 MCI, and 8 other dementia types) based on VR localization of a target on a landmark-less cubic 3-story building were analyzed. We hypothesize AD and MCI groups' performances are significantly different. AD and MCI spatial pe

[The relationship between cognitive impairment, anxiety-depression symptoms and balance and spatial orientation complaints in the elderly].

Balance and spatial orientation complaints, generically defined as "dizziness", are frequent in the elderly. They can cause a greater or lesser degree of handicap, and be associated with a greater or lesser degree of cognitive impairment and anxiety-depression symptoms. We examined 163 patients, referred for these complaints to the otoneurological outpatient services of 6 university hospital centres of the northern and central Italy, performing a bedside vestibular examination. The test allowed to distinguish between subjects with specific vestibular disorders (mainly BVP, Menière's disease an

A non-invasive hidden-goal test for spatial orientation deficit detection in subjects with suspected mild cognitive impairment.

BACKGROUND: There is a need for highly sensitive and specific tests and biomarkers that would allow preclinical diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease (AD), which would also enable timely intervention. NEW METHOD: We have developed a new system (ALZENTIA) to help detect early MCI, mainly caused by AD. The system is based on a hidden-goal task (HGT) in which the human subject has to find a target that is not visible; as such, the navigation is based on a previously memorized target position, in relation to the starting position (egocentric variant) and/or other na

Spatial representations and multiple-visual-systems hypotheses: evidence from a developmental deficit in visual location and orientation processing.

AH, a young, well-educated woman, has a developmental deficit in processing visual location and orientation information. Her deficit manifests itself in a wide range of visual tasks, including visually-guided reaching, copying pictures and words, and responding verbally to the location or orientation of visual stimuli; however, her performance in non-visual localization tasks is intact. AH's visual location and orientation errors are systematic left-right or up-down reflections (e.g., reaching to the far right for an object on the far left). More specifically, the errors involve reflection acr

Effects of non-linear flow and spatial orientation on technetium-99m hexamethylpropylene amine oxime single-photon emission tomography.

The effects of two post-acquisition corrections on the visual and quantitative analysis of technetium-99m hexamethylpropylene amine oxime (HMPAO) single-photon emission tomography (SPET) were determined. The corrections were for: (1) the improper spatial orientation of the patient data sets, and (2) the non-linear uptake of HMPAO across the blood-brain barrier. Reorienting the SPET image data sets removed observers' uncertainty in assessment caused by suspected head tilt; however, it increased their uncertainty due to perceived subtle perfusion deficits. Applying the correction to compensate f

A polarized FGF8 source specifies frontotemporal signatures in spatially oriented cell populations of cortical assembloids.

Organoids generating major cortical cell types in distinct compartments are used to study cortical development, evolution and disorders. However, the lack of morphogen gradients imparting cortical positional information and topography in current systems hinders the investigation of complex phenotypes. Here, we engineer human cortical assembloids by fusing an organizer-like structure expressing fibroblast growth factor 8 (FGF8) with an elongated organoid to enable the controlled modulation of FGF8 signaling along the longitudinal organoid axis. These polarized cortical assembloids mount a posit

Comparing neuronal oscillations during visual spatial attention orienting between normobaric and hypobaric hypoxia.

Normobaric hypoxia (NH) and hypobaric hypoxia (HH) are both used to train aircraft pilots to recognize symptoms of hypoxia. NH (low oxygen concentration) training is often preferred because it is more cost effective, simpler, and safer than HH. It is unclear, however, whether NH is neurophysiologically equivalent to HH (high altitude). Previous studies have shown that neural oscillations, particularly those in the alpha band (8-12 Hz), are impacted by hypoxia. Attention tasks have been shown to reliably modulate alpha oscillations, although the neurophysiological impacts of hypoxia during cogn
