PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of wearing a palatal plate on swallowing function.
METHODS: The subject group consisted of 10 healthy, fully dentate males. Two experimental palatal plates (EPP) were used in this study: one was 1.4mm thick (EPP1), and the other was 2.8mm thick (EPP2). Tongue movements and swallowing sounds were simultaneously recorded. The position of the surface of the tongue was recorded by using ultrasound diagnostic equipment in the sagittal plane. Swallowing tests were performed under three conditions: without EPP (WOE), with EPP1 (WP1), and

Soft-tissue lasers have numerous applications in orthodontics, including gingivectomy, frenectomy, operculectomy, papilla flattening, uncovering temporary anchorage devices, ablation of aphthous ulcerations, exposure of impacted teeth, and even tooth whitening. As an adjunctive procedure, laser surgery has helped many orthodontists to enhance the design of a patient's smile and improve treatment efficacy. Before incorporating soft-tissue lasers into clinical practice, the clinician must fully understand the basic science, safety protocol, and risks associated with them. The purpose of this art

This case report describes the interdisciplinary management of a 58-year-old woman with a misaligned dental implant in the maxillary left lateral incisor region, causing esthetic and functional challenges. Initial assessments revealed significant bone loss around the compromised implant, an asymmetric smile, and excessive gingival display. The treatment included slow orthodontic extrusion to reposition adjacent teeth, promoting bone and periodontal regeneration, and orthodontic intrusion on the contralateral side to correct occlusal cant and improve gingival esthetics. Aligners with miniscrew

This case report demonstrates the treatment of a skeletal Class II high-angle adult patient with bimaxillary protrusion, angle Class I occlusion, and crowded anterior teeth. A ribbon-wise arch wire and a customized lingual appliance with anterior vertical slots were used to achieve proper torque control of the maxillary anterior teeth. An orthodontic anchor screw and a palatal bar were used for vertical control to avoid increasing the Frankfort-mandibular plane angle (FMA) by maxillary molar extrusion. Through the combined use of the ribbon-wise customized lingual appliance, palatal bar, and o

INTRODUCTION: Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by skin fragility and blister formation. The phenotypic presentation is broad with four major types, being Recessive Dystrophic EB (RDEB) the most severe, including oral anomalies such as severe microstomia, ankyloglossia, vestibule obliteration and occlusal anomalies, turning orthodontic treatment into a challenge.
AIM: This case report aims to present the comprehensive treatment of a patient with severe RDEB, including periodontal surgery, orthodontic fixed braces with mini-screws and oral rehabilitation with

The risk of fracture or strain in mini-screws is higher if diameter, length, type of alloy or insertion angle is selected inappropriately. The aims of this study were to test the structural resistance of two types of orthodontic mini-screws -one made of stainless steel and another of titanium- from an international brand and to evaluate the efficacy of two other titanium miniscrews of Brazilian origin, during an extra-alveolar anchorage procedure. The mini-screws analyzed were: Bomei stainless steel and Bomei titanium / Taiwan, Morelli titanium and Neodent titanium/ Brazil. Experiments were co

Different temporary anchorage device (TAD)-assisted rapid palatal expanders may be used to treat malocclusions involving the transverse dimension and, in many instances, prevent more complex situations in the future. Each style of expander has advantages and disadvantages. The acrylic type of TAD-supported palate lateral wall expander is a reliable and cost-effective appliance for expansion treatment in adolescents and young adults (ie, aged 13 to 21). In comparison, other palatal expander designs are more suitable for older patients. One advantage of an acrylic TAD-supported palate lateral wa

Over eruption of maxillary molar is a common finding seen in cases with loss of mandibular antagonist. We came across a periodontally compromised patient with same condition demanding intrusion for the placement of a prosthesis for a missing molar. So an effort was made to design a wire framework bonded directly to the adjacent teeth, to which elastics were engaged to facilitate intrusion.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this cohort study was to evaluate the effect of self-ligating brackets (SB) and other related factors that influence orthodontic treatment time.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a two-armed prospective study. Consecutively treated patients who were recruited from a private practice were enrolled and asked to choose between SB and conventional brackets (CB). If the patient did not have a preference, that patient was randomly allocated. An identical archwire sequence was used, and all patients were treated by a single orthodontist. Treatment duration, number of bracket

We have developed a novel technique, the Jiyugaoka Enjoyable Treatment (JET) system, to complete orthodontic treatment in a short time. It entails the use of the regional acceleratory phenomenon (RAP), light continuous forces and low friction in cases involving extraction. In the JET system, tooth extraction not only creates space, but also triggers the RAP; thus tooth extraction accelerates orthodontic treatment. We describe for the first time how to use the JET system to shorten treatment time in a patient in whom four premolars were extracted. A 15 year old girl patient exhibited an Angle C
