Investigation of effective intrusion and extrusion force for maxillary canine using finite element analysis.

Orthodontic tooth movement is mainly regulated by the biomechanical responses of loaded periodontal ligament (PDL). We investigated the effective intervals of orthodontic force in pure maxillary canine intrusion and extrusion referring to PDL hydrostatic stress and logarithmic strain. Finite element analysis (FEA) models, including a maxillary canine, PDL and alveolar bone, were constructed based on computed tomography (CT) images of a patient. The material properties of alveolar bone were non-uniformly defined using HU values of CT images; PDL was assumed to be a hyperelastic-viscoelastic mat

Evaluation of Long-Term Efficacy of Forced Erupted Teeth for Restorative Purposes: A Clinical Retrospective Study.

This retrospective study evaluated the long-term stability of teeth that were orthodontically treated with forced eruption for restorative purposes. A total of 25 participants with a total of 36 orthodontically extruded teeth were included in the study. The measured clinical parameters included (1) pre- and posttreatment radiographs, (2) activation time, (3) retention time, (4) total treatment time, (5) additional treatment required to restore the teeth, and (6) pre- and postsurgical complications. The results show a 96.0% survival rate for force-erupted teeth, with a 4.0% failure rate due to

Impacted Canine Management Using Aligners Supported by Orthodontic Temporary Anchorage Devices.

INTRODUCTION: Temporary anchorage devices (TADs) represent an essential instrument under difficult anchorage conditions, especially when the procedure is approached with an aligner technique. The objective of this paper is to describe a possible sequence of orthodontic treatment of impacted canines with aligners supported by orthodontic mini-screws. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The resolution of impacted canines requires a specific clinical sequence constituted by different steps: the space creation, the surgical exposure, and the orthodontic traction (on the horizontal, vertical, and buccal direct

Forced Eruption for Implant Site Development Utilizing a CAD/CAM Provisional Fixed Dental Prosthesis: A Case Report.

Preexisting hard and soft tissue defects around hopeless teeth can impede the ideal esthetic and functional outcomes of implant therapy. Orthodontic extrusion has been described as a predictable nonsurgical alternative for vertical hard and soft tissue augmentation, commonly through the use of orthodontic brackets on multiple adjacent teeth. This case report describes an alternative technique via orthodontic extrusion, utilizing a digitally designed and milled fixed provisional restoration. The provisional restoration served as an anchor in the forced eruption of a maxillary lateral incisor fo

Endodontic Surgery of a Deviated Premolar Root in the Surgical Orthodontic Management of an Impacted Maxillary Canine.

Maxillary canine impactions are of multifactorial etiology. The incidence of maxillary canine impaction ranges from 1% to 4%. One of the reasons for canine impaction might be a deviated premolar root. This report describes surgical-orthodontic extrusion of an upper canine that occurred only after the endodontic surgery treatment of the adjacent deviated premolar root. Orthograde endodontic treatment followed by endodontic surgery with retrograde filling of the deviated premolar root was performed to obtain a surgical-orthodontic extrusion of the upper canine. A female patient, aged 15 years, w

Orthodontic considerations in the treatment of maxillary impacted canines.

The purpose of this article is to describe and discuss a relatively unknown and underestimated technical approach to the orthodontic extrusion of impacted canine teeth. It constitutes a preliminary report of a researcher project conducted in our undergraduate clinics on patients treated for orthodontic extrusion of impacted teeth. Of these patients, twenty-seven had maxillary canine impaction, sixteen unilateral and eleven bilateral, for a total of thirty-eight teeth. Some surgical considerations and various fixation appliances for impactions are discussed, as well as the advantages and disadv

Forced eruption and implant site development: soft tissue response.

The increased use of implants in orthodontics has stimulated interest in augmenting bone in patients who have deficient alveolar ridges that preclude ideal implant placement. A nonsurgical technique for increasing the amount of available bone for implant site development and fixture placement is orthodontic extrusion, or forced eruption. The concept of a tooth moving coronally by orthodontic means and the clinical alterations in the soft tissue architecture of the periodontium demonstrated during orthodontic extrusive movement of periodontally compromised teeth have demonstrated a direct relat

Alternative treatment approach for anterior subgingival dental lesions: Forced eruption using attractive magnets.

This article reports the use of a minimally invasive technique to address a challenging clinical problem in the esthetic zone. The clinical steps taken to achieve forced eruption by 1.5-2.0 mm of a maxillary central incisor that presented minimal clinical crown because of caries are described in detail. This subsequently allowed the successful placement of a crown. The tooth was extruded by forces generated between 2 neodymium-iron-boron magnets. One was affixed to the palatal surface of the tooth, and the other was embedded in a thermoformed splint. Weekly circumferential supracrestal fiberot

An efficient and noncompliant method for forced eruption with microimplants that is bracket free, and its long-term stability.

BACKGROUND AND OVERVIEW: The authors describe a bracket-free forced eruption technique using microimplants that does not require patient compliance and report relapse after long-term observation. CASE DESCRIPTION: In 2 patients who needed to undergo forced eruption of carious and fractured roots of anterior teeth, the authors erupted the roots forcefully with a cantilever wire and microimplants as an anchorage. The microimplants provided sufficient anchorage by approximately 6 to 7 millimeters for forced eruption of the roots. The authors observed minor relapse of approximately 0.5 mm in both

[Surgical-orthodontic treatment of an impacted maxillary incisor].

An eruption disturbance of a central maxillary incisor can be caused by the intrusion of a deciduous incisor. Depending on the age of the individual when trauma occurred, this may lead to a so-called dilaceration. Surgical exposure and ligation if needed, followed by orthodontic extrusion, will generally be successful. In one case, the central upper incisor appeared to be dislodged and exposure, ligation and orthodontic extrusion resulted in an excellent aesthetic result.

Posterior Open Bite Due to Failure of Maxillary Molar Eruption.

Posterior open bite can cause problems with occlusion. It arises from systemic or local factors such as physical or functional interference, ankylosis, and failure of eruption. Primary failure of eruption (PFE) is a rare condition that is difficult to differentiate from ankylosis and requires complex treatment strategies. Here we report a 12-year-old girl who was referred to our hospital by her dentist for re-evaluation of eruption failure of the left maxillary secondary premolar and first and second molars with congenitally missing maxillary lateral teeth. The maxillary first molar was extrac

Uprighting partially impacted permanent second molars.

Impaction of the lower second molar is not a common problem, but it is very challenging for both orthodontist and oral surgeon. Treatment options depend on the degree of tooth inclination, the position of the third molars, and the desired type of movement, which may be surgical and/or orthodontic in nature. A good treatment alternative is surgical uncovering with orthodontically-assisted eruption. A case of successful uprighting using a 0.017 x 0.025-inch titanium molybdenum alloy (TMA) tip-back cantilever is presented. Different aspects of uprighting impacted second molars are discussed in li

Forced eruption with miniscrews; inter-arch [corrected] method with vertical elastics versus intra-arch method using the Derton-Perini technique: two case reports.

INTRODUCTION: Orthodontic preprosthetic treatment is an important feature of interdisciplinary dental therapy in the adult patient. Extrusion can be very useful to obtain successful prosthodontic results. The literature describes different ways to obtain forced dental eruption. Miniscrews represent a step towards resolving the problem of anchorage in orthodontics, including in forced eruption cases. The aim of this study is to report two cases of orthodontic preprosthetic extrusion by means of miniscrews and bone anchorage. We will describe and discuss the indications, orthodontic and surgical

Lingual orthodontics and forced eruption: a means for osseous and tissue regeneration.

An hopeless upper central incisor was subjected to forced eruption in order to improve and develop the implant site by distraction of the periodontal ligament-alveolar bone complex. The orthodontic extrusion was carried out with two aesthetic approaches: lingual orthodontics and a composite resin 2-2 veneer pontic. The first part of the extrusion was realized with lingual orthodontics alone, then, when the crown had been remodelled in its greatest part and the aesthetics was no more acceptable to the patient a composite resin 2-2 veneer pontic was bonded to the vestibular side of the other thr

[Changes of the periodontal vascular network, periodontal fiber and alveolar bone incident to tooth extrusion].

During the application of orthodontic force to a tooth, the surrounding tissues undergo changes of bone resorption and apposition, thereby resulting in tooth movement. The purpose of this study was to investigate the interrelationship between alveolar bone changes and the periodontal vascular network caused by extrusive orthodontic force using a scanning electron microscopy. Extrusive orthodontic force was applied to the mandibular 2nd and 3rd premolars of adult dogs. At the completion of the loading process, the inferior alveolar arteries were injected with a low viscosity MMA resin (Mercox).

Management of subgingivally fractured maxillary anterior tooth: a multidisciplinary approach.

The major challenge in traumatic injuries is the management of subgingival fracture of anterior teeth. Forced orthodontic extrusion is a suitable approach for these teeth as it provides both a sound tissue margin for final restoration and creates a periodontal environment (biological width) which is easy for the patient to maintain. Restoration after orthodontic eruption may present a more conservative treatment choice in young patients compared with the prosthetic restoration after extraction. This paper reports a case of the fractured maxillary anterior tooth at the subgingival level that wa
