A systematic review of biocompatibility and safety of orthodontic clear aligners and transparent vacuum-formed thermoplastic retainers: Bisphenol-A release, adverse effects, cytotoxicity, and estrogenic effects.

BACKGROUND: An ever-increasing demand is seen for clear aligners and transparent vacuum-formed retainers. They are esthetic and convenient. However, the biomaterials used in these appliances might pose biological safety and biocompatibility threats in terms of their bisphenol-A (BPA) release, cytotoxicity, adverse effects, and estrogenic effects. Due to the controversial results and the lack of any systematic reviews in this regard, we conducted this systematic review. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Web of Science, PubMed, Cochrane, Scopus, and Google Scholar as well as references of the found articl

Retained Orthodontic Bracket in a Facial Soft Tissue Laceration Following Trauma: Clinical Management and Literature Review.

Foreign bodies embedded in the maxillofacial region following traumatic injuries pose a significant challenge to oral and maxillofacial surgeons. These retained objects may become a source of persistent pain, infection, and other complications. Early diagnosis can be achieved through the use of computed tomography (CT), which facilitates accurate localization of the foreign body. Once identified, prompt removal is recommended to prevent further morbidity. Here, we report a case in which early diagnosis of a foreign body embedded within the maxillofacial soft tissues enabled its successful retr

Acrylic orthodontic retainer is not a risk factor for focal Candida colonization in young healthy patients: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Denture enhances the risk of Candida colonization because of adherence to acrylic base and interference with salivary rinsing. Acrylic orthodontic appliances may also create retentive areas for food debris and microbial pathogens; moreover, patients are instructed to use the retainers at night, when salivary secretion is reduced. We studied the Candida colonization in orthodontic patients using acrylic retainer. METHODS: Participants were orthodontic patients with full compliance during the retention phase with no signs or symptoms or being at risk for Candida, divided into users

Comparison of survival time between two types of orthodontic fixed retainer: a prospective randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this prospective clinical study was to compare the mean durability and the failure rates of two types of orthodontic retainers. METHODS: Orthodontic patients (142) aged between 14 and 28 years were recruited in this study. The polyethylene woven ribbon (Ribbond, Seattle, WA, USA) retainer was compared with a 0.0175-in flexible spiral wire (Respond, Ormco, Glendora, CA, USA) retainer. When treatment was completed, the retainers were bonded from canine to canine in the maxillary and the mandibular arches of the participants. In the follow-up visits, the patients were re-e

Survival of conventionally bonded mandibular retainers with or without enamel sandblasting in orthodontic patients over a 12-month period. A single-centre, split-mouth randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this trial was to assess the effect of enamel sandblasting in addition to the acid-etch technique in reducing first-time failures of fixed mandibular retainers placed over a 12-month period. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ethical approval was obtained. Participants were recruited in a single private practice. The primary outcome of this study was any first-time failure of the mandibular fixed retainer assessed at three timepoints over a 12-month period. Three consecutive teeth either on the left or right side (from lower canine-lower central incisor) were randomly allocated to

Clinical Effectiveness of Upper Vacuum-Formed Retainers Used in A Dual Retention Protocol After Orthodontic Treatment: Retainer Failures and Upper Arch Stability. A 24-Month Prospective Cohort Study.

OBJECTIVES: This prospective cohort study aimed to evaluate the number of failures of upper vacuum-formed retainers (VFRs) used in a dual retention protocol and the capacity to maintain upper arch stability 24 months after debonding. MATERIAL AND METHODS: At the end of orthodontic treatment (T0), 93 consecutive patients (12-25 years) received an upper VFR for night-time use and a fixed retainer. The patients were seen 12 (T1) and 24 months (T2) after debonding. At both time points, the status of the VFR was checked. Intraoral scans were taken at T2. Upper arch dimensions were measured at both

Single-retainer resin-bonded fixed dental prostheses as an alternative to orthodontic space closure (and to single-tooth implants).

This article describes single-retainer resin-bonded fixed dental prostheses (RBFDPs) as an excellent alternative to orthodontic space closure or tooth replacement with implants or conventional fixed dental prostheses for congenitally and traumatically missing anterior teeth. Although the treatment with RBFDPs is technique sensitive, it is extremely reliable given a correct indication and adequate adhesive procedures.

Assessment of the effectiveness of two different orthodontic retention protocols.

The main goal of orthodontic retention is to keep the teeth in their corrected positions. Fixed or removable retainers are the most common types of retainers used during the retention phase. For the maxilla, various types of retainers have been described, including the vacuum-formed retainers and Hawley retainers. Fixed retainers are used for the lower jaw.

Effects of fixed retainers on gingival recession - a 10-year retrospective study.

OBJECTIVE: The aetiology of gingival recessions is not fully understood, and no evidence has yet emerged of a single predisposing factor that instigates this apical shift of the gingival margin. Nonetheless, both fixed retainers and orthodontic treatment have been cited as potential risk factors. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of orthodontic treatment and orthodontic fixed retainers on gingival recessions. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: In total, 105 patients at the Department of Orthodontics at the University of Gothenburg who had undergone orthodontic treatment between 1995 - 2003 w

The Treatment of Gingival Recessions in the Lower Anterior Region Associated with the Use/Absence of Lingual-Fixed Orthodontics Retainers: Three Case Reports Using the Laterally Closed Tunnel Technique and Parallel Incision Methods.

Background: The prevalence of gingival recessions (GRs) in the global population is 78%. A long-term study showed a 47% increase in the prevalence of GRs five years post-orthodontic treatment, particularly in the lower anterior region. It can be caused and/or exacerbated after orthodontic treatment, where the retainer placed can induce tooth movement or when it fails to maintain a passive position upon bonding. Thus, the goal of this case report was to present treatments for gingival recessions, with the approaches of the laterally closed tunnel technique and parallel incision methods, after o
