Evaluation of IL-10, IL-22, and TNF-α in the gingival crevicular fluid of patients with orthodontic treatment using NiTi and Cu-NiTi archwires.

BACKGROUND: The biological mechanism behind tooth movement relies on sterile inflammation, which can be affected by the various characteristics of orthodontic wire alloys. Hence, this study was designed to evaluate and compare the effects of copper-nickel-titanium (Cu-NiTi) and nickel-titanium (NiTi) wires on the concentrations of the cytokines IL-10, IL-22, and TNF-α in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) during the initial phase of dental alignment. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study analyzed GCF samples from 24 patients exhibiting crowding treated with either Cu-NiTi or NiTi wires (12 pa

Teeth movement 12 years after orthodontic treatment with and without retainer: relapse or usual changes?

AIMS: To identify if lower incisor movements after orthodontic treatment are due to the relapse of the orthodontic treatment or due to natural growth. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The subjects consisted of 92 patients who have had orthodontic treatment, divided into three groups, group 1: 38 individuals had no retainer in the lower jaw. Group 2: 24 individuals had a retainer 0.028 inch, a spring hard wire bonded to the mandibular canines only. Group 3: 30 individuals had a 0.0195-inch Twist-Flex wire, bonded to all mandibular incisors and canines. Study models before orthodontic treatment (T0), imme

Reduction in static friction by deposition of a homogeneous diamond-like carbon (DLC) coating on orthodontic brackets.

In orthodontics, a reduction in static friction between the brackets and wire is important to enable easy tooth movement. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of a homogeneous diamond-like carbon (DLC) coating on the whole surfaces of slots in stainless steel orthodontic brackets on reducing the static friction between the brackets and the wire. The DLC coating was characterized using Raman spectroscopy, surface roughness and contact angle measurements, and SEM observations. Rectangular stainless steel and titanium-molybdenum alloy wires with two different sizes were employed, and

"Wire syndrome"-induced mucogingival defect management using the laterally closed tunnel technique.

Wire syndrome is an iatrogenic complication, characterized by unexpected tooth movements during orthodontic retention, even without detachment of the retention wire. It can cause esthetic and functional damage through adverse mucogingival changes. This case report describes the management of gingival recession induced by wire syndrome using the laterally closed tunnel technique with a connective tissue graft. A diagnosis of biofilm-induced gingivitis on a reduced periodontium was established after clinical and radiographic evaluation. The graft was laterally stabilized, and suspended sutures e

Clinical assessment of injuries in orthodontic movement of impacted teeth. I. Methods of attachment.

Recent studies have indicated ankylosis, loss of attachment, and external resorption occurring as sequelae of orthodontic movement of impacted teeth when these teeth are ligated around the cervix with wire. The purpose of this study was to record the effects of two commonly employed methods of attachment to impacted teeth--the wire ligation and the direct bond. Twenty subjects who had previously undergone full-banded orthodontic treatment involving a unilateral impacted maxillary canine were studied. The contralateral non-impacted maxillary canine served as a control. In eight of the subjects

Simple Elastomeric Chain Ligation Method for Palatally / Linguall Placed Lateral or Canines.

Palataly-displaced incisors or canines are typically extruded. The crossbite must be corrected without occlusal interference during alignment. Occlusal interference associated with such extrusion can prevent proper tooth positioning, and therefore, the temporary use of a bite plate may be necessary' However, unnecessary bite raising may occur when a bite plate is used in adults, and the patient's discomfort due to such an appliance cannot be ignored. Most of the time, conventional ligation fails and also ends with debonding of the bracket. A slin shot use ofan elastic chain forfaster correctio

Biofilm formation on stainless steel and gold wires for bonded retainers in vitro and in vivo and their susceptibility to oral antimicrobials.

OBJECTIVE: Bonded retainers are used in orthodontics to maintain treatment result. Retention wires are prone to biofilm formation and cause gingival recession, bleeding on probing and increased pocket depths near bonded retainers. In this study, we compare in vitro and in vivo biofilm formation on different wires used for bonded retainers and the susceptibility of in vitro biofilms to oral antimicrobials. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Orthodontic wires were exposed to saliva, and in vitro biofilm formation was evaluated using plate counting and live/dead staining, together with effects of exposure t

[Are self-ligating brackets more efficient than conventional brackets ? A meta-analysis of randomized controlled and split-mouth trials].

The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to compare self-ligating brackets (SLBs) considered as a whole to conventional brackets (CBs). An electronic search was performed in three databases (PubMed, MEDLINE via Web of Science, Cochrane Library) from their origin up to June 2017. Additional articles were hand searched from January 2006 to June 2017. This meta-analysis was restricted to randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and split mouth design studies (SMDs). No distinction was made between active and passive SLBs. The following variables were investigated : treatment duration, n

Effect of Different Bracket Prescriptions on Orthodontic Treatment Outcomes Measured by Three-dimensional Scanning.

Various types of bracket are currently available, and different prescriptions are provided for the same type of tooth. There are no definite criteria, however, on which to base bracket selection. The purpose of this study was to investigate differences in the angulation and inclination of orthodontically aligned teeth when using different prescription brackets. Thirty patients undergoing orthodontic treatment for maxillary protrusion and crowding were enrolled. After orthodontic treatment with a pre-adjusted appliance, angulation and inclination were measured on dental casts obtained from thes

Clinical applications of direct orthodontic bonding systems.

Utilization of direct bonding of attachments to tooth surfaces has greatly facilitated traditional full-banding procedures for patients undergoing complete orthodontic therapy. The bonding of plastic brackets best relegated to maxillary anterior teeth is supplemented with metal bracket bonding for posterior teeth. Buccal tubes attached to metal mesh pads may also be bonded, although conventional orthodontic bands and buccal tubes are ideal for posterior teeth. Bonded metal brackets can accommodate resilient arch wires, torque sectionals, and root paralleling springs. Direct bonding to recently
