[Common characteristics of temporomandibular joint surgery and orthognathic surgery].

Orthognathic surgery and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) surgery are two relatively independent disciplines in oral and maxillofacial surgery. Dentofacial deformities and TMJ diseases commonly coexist. The diagnosis and treatment of the diseases with coexisting dentofacial deformities and TMJ disorders is complex. Thus it is very important to comprehensively understand the common characteristics of orthognathic and TMJ surgery, which places a greater demand on oral and maxillofacial surgeons. The present work focuses on our thinking on common characteristics of TMJ and orthognathic surgery based

Virtual model surgery and wafer fabrication for orthognathic surgery.

Model surgery is one of the most important steps in the preoperative workup for orthognathic surgery. In cases of complicated two-jaw surgery, manual model surgery requires many laboratory based steps that are time-consuming and may contain potential errors. Recently, a three-dimensional virtual model surgery (3D-VMS) program (3Txer version 2, Orapix, Seoul, Korea) was introduced. The purpose of this article is to present a 3D-VMS case using combined data from 3D computed tomography and 3D virtual dental casts.

Effect of Orthognathic Surgery on Movement of the Cheilion.

The cheilion (Ch), corner of the mouth, is the soft-tissue landmark where the upper and lower lips intersect. Orthognathic surgery can modify Ch position, which can affect facial esthetics. The aims were to evaluate Ch movements resulting from Le Fort I maxillary advancement with maxillary impaction or downgrafting, and with mandibular advancement or setback, and to investigate relationships between surgical movements and Ch movements. The 45 patients had undergone bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy with Le Fort I advancement surgery. They were divided into 4 groups according to surgical

Orthognathic Surgery in Patients with Syndromic Craniosynostosis.

Patients with syndromic and nonsyndromic synostosis may have end-stage skeletal discrepancies involving the lower midface and mandible, with associated malocclusion. While orthognathic surgical procedures in this population can be reliably executed, the surgeon must be aware of the unique morphologic characteristics that accompany the primary diagnoses as well as the technical challenges associated with performing Le Fort I osteotomies in patients who have undergone prior subcranial midface distraction.

Recent Trends in Orthognathic Surgery in Asia.

Anatomy and standards of beauty are different between Asians and Westerners. Unlike Westerners, Asians have a wide and prominent jaw shape but prefer a slim and soft face shape. To achieve this goal, maxillary setback and/or posterior impaction surgeries are popular among upper jaw surgery, and various adjuvant surgeries are performed simultaneously on the mandible to obtain the so-called oval shape or V-line face. In addition, according to the development of virtual surgery software and orthodontic treatment techniques, the surgery-first approach is now accepted as a reliable option for ortho

Augmentation of the infraorbital rim in orthognathic surgery.

Mid-face augmentation via a Le Fort I osteotomy is a commonly performed operation. Advancement of the upper jaw and associated structures (nose, lower cheek areas) can certainly improve function as well as facial aesthetics and harmony. Often, in patients with severe mid-face deficiency, hypoplasia of the maxilla extends all the way up to the infraorbital rims. The receding infraorbital rim contributes to the negative vector of the globes. In patients with this level of mid-face hypoplasia, while advancing the maxilla at the Le Fort I level satisfies all of the requirements for orthognathic su

[Orthognathic surgery in adults: state of the art].

The objective of orthognathic surgery is the repositioning of the osseous bases of the jaws. Its consequences are both aesthetic and functional. As adults are increasingly concerned with appearance, orthognathic surgery is today, more than ever, a close collaboration between the orthodontist, surgeon and general dentist. The whole team must be capable of coordinating its approach with an aesthetic objective. For the surgeon, a perfect knowledge of complementary techniques (rhinoplasty, bone grafts, plastic surgery of the face, lipostructure or fillers) makes orthognathic surgery a completely s

Orthognathic surgery in pycnodysostosis: a case report.

Pycnodysostosis is an extremely rare genetic osteosclerosis caused by cathepsin K deficiency. It is a human autosomal recessive genetic disorder characterized mainly by osteosclerosis of the skeleton due to decreased bone turnover. It is characterized by short stature, brachycephaly, short and stubby fingers, open cranial sutures and fontanelle, and diffuse osteosclerosis. Multiple fractures of the long bones and osteomyelitis of the jaw are frequent complications. The authors describe an 18-year-old girl with a clinical and radiological diagnosis of pycnodysostosis and the ortho-surgical trea

Asymmetry of the lips of orthognathic surgery patients.

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to examine asymmetry of the lips in patients with jaw deformity and facial asymmetry. METHODS: Pretreatment and posttreatment frontal facial photographs of 17 patients who had mandibular prognathism with facial asymmetry were analyzed. Linear and angular measurements were made on the photographs to assess the asymmetry of the lips. The upper and lower vermilion borders of the lips were divided into quadrants according to the y-axis, and each was measured. In addition, skeletal deviation (position of menton) was determined from the frontal cephalogra
