Osteology of the pectoral girdle and forelimb of Siriusgnathus niemeyerorum, a Late Triassic traversodontid cynodont from Brazil.

Traversodontids are non-mammaliaform cynodonts, herbivorous to omnivorous, that lived during the Triassic. In the Late Triassic, some members of this group increased in body size relative to other cynodont lineages and evolved postcranial adaptations associated with locomotion. The Late Triassic Siriusgnathus niemeyerorum is one such traversodontid. Originally described in 2018 based on cranial material, the species has since been the focus of considerable advances in our understanding of its skull anatomy; however, its postcranial skeleton remains undescribed. The present study examined the p

Osteology and radiographic anatomy of the pelvis and hind limb of healthy ring-tailed lemurs (Lemur catta).

In family Lemuridae, anatomical variations exist. Considering its conservation status (near threatened) and presence of similarities between strepsirrhines and primitive animals, it was thought to be beneficial to describe the gross osteology and radiographic anatomy of the pelvis and hind limb of ring-tailed lemurs (Lemur catta) as a reference for clinical use and species identification. Radiography was performed in 14 captive adult ring-tailed lemurs. The radiographic findings were correlated with bone specimens from two adult animals. Additionally, computed tomography of the hind limbs was

Osteological correlates of the respiratory and vascular systems in the neural canals of Mesozoic ornithurines Ichthyornis and Janavis.

In birds, the neural canal houses a variety of anatomical structures including the spinal cord, meninges, spinal vasculature, and respiratory diverticula. Among these, paramedullary diverticula and the extradural dorsal spinal vein may leave behind osteological correlates in the form of pneumatic foramina and fossae, and a bilobed geometry of the neural canal, respectively. While recent studies have cast light on the evolution of avian skeletal pneumaticity, evidence for these respiratory and vascular structures has never been reported in Mesozoic ornithurines, raising questions about the evol

Osteological development of a small and fast metamorphic frog, Microhyla fissipes (Anura, Neobatrachia, Microhylidae).

Describing osteological development is of great importance for understanding vertebrate phenotypic variations, form-functional transitions and ecological adaptations. Anurans exhibit dramatic changes in their morphology, habitat preferences, diet and behaviour between the tadpole and frog stages. However, the anatomical details of their cranial and postcranial development have not been extensively studied, especially in Microhylidae. In this work, we studied the microhylid Microhyla fissipes, commonly known as the ornamented pygmy frog, a small-sized frog with fast metamorphosis. Its osteologi

Osteological evidence of short-limbed dwarfism in a nineteenth century Dutch family: Achondroplasia or hypochondroplasia.

An opportunity to explore osteological features of a form of disproportionate dwarfism is presented by a recent archaeological discovery. Excavation of a predominately nineteenth century Dutch cemetery from the rural, agricultural village of Middenbeemster revealed an older adult female with skeletal changes consistent with achondroplasia. The most marked features are a rhizomelic pattern of shortened and thickened upper and lower limbs, frontal bossing and a moderately depressed nasal bridge, small lumbar neural canals with short pedicles, bowing of the femora and tibiae, and short stature (1

Osteological, Biological, and Genetic Consequences of Colonization of Fresh Waters by Marine Cottoid Fishes (Cottidae).

Мarine cottoid fishes of the genus Triglopsis colonized large lakes of glacial genesis in Northern Europe and North America. The fourhorn sculpin Triglopsis quadricornis dispersed into post-glacial European lakes (e.g., Ladoga and Onega) from the Baltic Sea. The Great Lakes are inhabited by a freshwater species, Triglopsis thompsonii. Lacustrine forms of Triglopsis from North American and European lakes are at different stages of evolution, making them a suitable model for testing hypotheses about evolutionary patterns and rates. An integrative analysis of morphological, genetic, and biologica

Morphological sciences in a forensic context: The importance of recognizing osteoblastic lesions found in an osteological collection.

Certain bone lesions originate from metastases caused by specific types of cancer. Prostate cancer is a malignant neoplasm whose metastases are typically osteoblastic lesions, often resembling a "sunburst" pattern. The study of human skeletal remains, particularly in forensic contexts, can reveal fundamental aspects, such as the probable cause of death. The objective of this study was to analyze and identify individualizing characteristics, specifically osteoblastic lesions, in skeletons from the osteological collection of the Forensic Anthropology and Osteology Laboratory (LAOF) at the Federa

Spina bifida, the normal, the pathological and the in-between: first evidence from a forensic osteological collection.

Spina bifida (SB), a rare congenital disorder, is often mentioned as an individualizing factor in Forensic Anthropology. A lack of empirical data regarding SB is noticed in the scientific literature. Moreover, within the scope of anthropological research on SB disparities in terminology, classification systems, and methodological approaches result in incomparable results. The wide range (1,2%-50%) of "spina bifida occulta" reported prevalences is a good example. This research aims to analyze and debate the standard diagnostic criteria of SB on human skeletal remains, and attempts to elaborate

Osteological evidence of metabolic diseases from a post medieval North Italy archaeological site.

Skeletal lesions related to metabolic diseases in children have been systematically investigated in paleopathological literature only in recent years. This work presents an infant pathological specimen from the post-medieval cemetery of the St. Mary's Nativity church (15th-18th centuries, Segno, Trento, Trentino, Northeast Italy). The bones belonged to an individual of 9 ± 3 months of age, estimated upon an assessment of the stage of dental eruption. Metabolic diseases were diagnosed with paleopathological criteria according to previous literature. Differential diagnosis of the osteological ev

Femoral Version and Tibial Torsion are Not Associated With Hip or Knee Arthritis in a Large Osteological Collection.

BACKGROUND: Tibial torsion and femoral anteversion are common rotational abnormalities in children, and their courses are most often benign and self-resolving. Although neither usually requires surgical treatment, the decision to perform a derotational osteotomy is usually based on the degree of functional impairment. Neither condition is thought to influence the development of osteoarthritis of the hip or knee; however, to date there have been no large scale studies confirming this. METHODS: Tibial torsion and femoral version in 1158 cadaveric tibiae and femora were measured using a camera s

Osteological proofs of torture and cruelty: forensic findings form a secret cemetery in Tirana, Albania.

Two decades after the fall of the communism in Albania, documenting the human rights violations and proving torture and cruelties suffered from ex-politically persecuted and dissidents of the regime, is still a societal priority. Due to several reasons, the judicial way toward redressing the historical injustices has been slowed down. This is mainly because of the lack of proper documentation of torture, mass executions and extrajudicial ill-treatment. Several governmental and civil society organizations have tried to define the issue, but perpetrators have rarely, if ever, been brought to cou

Osteological features in pure-bred dogs predisposing to thoracic or lumbar spinal cord compression.

Consistent with those vertebral sites most commonly clinically affected by spinal cord compression, body size normalised midsagittal diameters of the caudal vertebral foramen limits T10-T12 were significantly (P<0.05) lower in Dachshunds relative to other breeds. Minimal midsagittal diameters in Yorkshire Terriers and Maltese were noted at T11cd/12cr. However, these diameters were always larger (P<0.05) in small breeds compared to those in Dachshunds and large breeds suggesting that the small breeds investigated are at lower risk of developing clinical signs if a compressive disease occurs at

The cranio-mandibular complex of the nightjar Systellura longirostris (Aves, Caprimulgiformes): functional relationship between osteology, myology and feeding.

Here we address the morphology of the cranial musculoskeletal in the South American Band-winged nightjar (Systellura longirostris, Caprimulgiformes, Aves) with the focus upon in how the mouth closure and opening mechanism is. Bony characters such as the thinness of the interorbital septum and the reduction of the postorbital process co-assist the location of large eyes, although correlations between eye size brain mass and body mass revealed that the Band-winged nightjar's eye is bigger than expected. The reduction of the processus orbitalis of the os quadratum would allow the great mouth open

Integrating Osteology and Ancient DNA: Cranial Variation, Hemoglobin S, and Paternal Lineage in a Roman-Period Individual from Anatolia.

(1) Background: Integrated bioarchaeological approaches combining osteological and ancient DNA analyses provide powerful insights into health, disease, and population history in past societies. However, the relationship between rare skeletal variations, genetic disorders, and ancestry remains insufficiently explored within single individuals. This study aimed to investigate the combined osteological, paleopathological, and genetic characteristics of a Roman-period individual from southwestern Anatolia. (2) Methods: A multidisciplinary approach was applied to the skeletal remains of an adult ma

Decision trees for estimating osteological sex from the skull using an expanded suite of morphological traits.

Osteological sex estimation utilizing morphological traits of the skull primarily focuses on a set of five traits. Developing new models with an expanded suite of traits has the potential to increase sex classification accuracies and improve the classification of partial and fragmentary remains. Thus, this study seeks to improve classification accuracies for osteological sex estimation from the skull by assessing an expanded suite of traits and generating multiple decision tree classification models. Twenty-one traits were evaluated for a sample of 403 adult males and females. Krippendorff's a

Insight into age-related changes of the human facial skeleton based on medieval European osteological collection.

Aging changes in the facial skeleton are concentrated mostly in orbits, maxilla and mandible. The aim of this study was to analyze metric traits of the adult viscerocranium in a medieval sample from Cedynia (Poland, Central Europe) and confront the results with literature data for modern populations. It was assumed that diet-related greater biomechanical forces generated during mastication in medieval versus modern times led to slower rate of bone resorption with age. 3D models of the facial skeleton are created for 230 individuals, categorized into young, middle and old adults, and a subgroup

Survival of an Indian Ocean humpback dolphin Sousa plumbea in the wild despite chronic osteologic pathologies.

Skeletal examination of a female adult Indian Ocean humpback dolphin Sousa plumbea from South Africa suggested a chronic disease process. It manifested as erosions and pitting of the atlanto-occipital articulation as well as circumferential hyperostosis and ankylosis of some of the caudal vertebrae, findings rarely recorded together in the same animal. The character of the erosive process and vertebral fusion appeared chronic, and further findings of underdevelopment of the fluke, sternum and left humerus with remodeling of the periarticular region of the left scapula may support initiation of

Age-at-death assessed with Lamendin's original and population-specific models in a modern Brazilian osteological collection.

BACKGROUND: Estimating the age at death is a common procedure in the fields of forensic human identification and anthropological/archaeological investigations. Root translucency and periodontosis are regressive parameters used to estimate the age of adults, more specifically in Lamendin's method - established in 1992 in a French population. This study aimed to test the applicability and validity of Lamendin's method in a Brazilian osteological collection. METHODS: The sample consisted of 74 single-rooted teeth obtained from 50 skeletal remains (mean age: 53.20 ± 16.17 years) from Southeast Br

A new extinct species of alligator lizard (Squamata: Elgaria) and an expanded perspective on the osteology and phylogeny of Gerrhonotinae.

BACKGROUND: Alligator lizards (Gerrhonotinae) are a well-known group of extant North American lizard. Although many fossils were previously referred to Gerrhonotinae, most of those fossils are isolated and fragmentary cranial elements that could not be placed in a precise phylogenetic context, and only a handful of known fossils are articulated skulls. The fossil record has provided limited information on the biogeography and phylogeny of Gerrhonotinae. RESULTS: We redescribe a nearly complete articulated fossil skull from the Pliocene sediments of the Anza-Borrego Desert in southern Californ

Rediscovery of the toadlet Brachycephalus bufonoides Miranda-Ribeiro, 1920 (Anura: Brachycephalidae) with osteological and acoustic descriptions.

Brachycephalus bufonoides was described as a "variety" of B. ephippium based on two specimens which 90 years later was considered full species. Besides its brief original description, nothing else is known for this species. Herein we report the rediscovery of the pumpkin-toadlet Brachycephalus bufonoides from Nova Friburgo, State of Rio de Janeiro, the second most populous area within the Atlantic Forest in Brazil. A detailed osteological description of this species was also provided, including skull, hyolaryngeal skeleton and postcranium skeleton. The laryngeal skeleton of Brachycephalus genu
