[Monoarthritis of the elbow revealing an intraarticular osteoid osteoma].

BACKGROUND: Osteoid osteoma is one of the unusual causes of musculoskeletal pain. Its diagnosis is usually not difficult in classic diaphyseal localization. However, the diagnosis of juxta or intraarticular osteoid osteoma is challenging because of atypical clinical presentation responsible for long diagnosis delay. AIM: Report a new case. CASE REPORT: We report herein the case of a 22-year-old woman presenting an intraarticular osteoid osteoma of the elbow. Diagnosis has been established on imaging findings (MRI and CT-scan) after 10 months because of atypical clinical presentation as a chr

Osteoid osteoma of the ethmoid bone associated with dacryocystitis.

BACKGROUND: Osteoid osteomas (OO) are small, benign osteoblastic lesions. Ethmoid bone OO has been very rarely reported so far. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a 16-year-old boy suffering from persistent epiphora and a mild pain in the area of median canthus, due to a bone density mass within the right ethmoid air cells extending to the ipsilateral right orbit. The mass was removed via an external ethmoidectomy approach. Histopathologic examination of the specimen set the diagnosis of OO. One year after the operation the patient is free of symptoms, while no recurrence occurred. CONCL

Progression of an osteoid osteoma to an osteoblastoma. Case report.

The authors report the unusual case of a 25-year-old man with occipitocervical pain related to a lesion of the C-1 lateral mass. Initially this lesion measured 8 mm and exhibited radiological features of an osteoid osteoma. Seven years later, as pain increased and became unresponsive to antiinflammatory drugs, computerized tomography scanning demonstrated progression to a 16-mm lesion, highly suspicious of an osteoblastoma. After mobilization of the vertebral artery from the C-1 groove, the lesion was completely resected via an anterolateral approach. Complete symptomatic relief, restoration o

Effect of rofecoxib on pain caused by osteoid osteoma.

In a prospective study, nine patients with osteoid osteoma were treated with a selective cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitor (rofecoxib). Patient pain perception with no treatment, with conventional nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) treatment, and with rofecoxib therapy was compared using a visual analog scale. Tumor response was also monitored by radiographs, computed tomography, and bone scintigraphy. In all cases, pain diminished on administration of rofecoxiib in comparison to conventional NSAIDs (P < .05). Four patients underwent surgery whereas in the remaining five patients, bone scint

[Osteoid osteoma in the hand: an evaluation of eight patients].

OBJECTIVES: We retrospectively evaluated patients with osteoid osteoma localized in the hand, which is a rare location for this lesion. METHODS: Eight patients (5 females, 3 males; mean age 23 years; range 13 to 31 years) underwent surgery for osteoid osteoma localized in the hand. Involvement was in the right hand in five patients, and in the left hand in three patients, being in the proximal phalanges in all the patients. The affected fingers were the fourth in five patients, and the first, second, and third in the remaining three patients, respectively. Five patients presented with pain re

[Spinal osteoid osteomas. Apropos of 4 cases].

Spinal osteoid osteomas constitute a rare but perfectly curable cause of non-disc root pain. In discussing four cases (2 cervical and 2 lumbar), the authors stress that this disorder affects above all males under 30 and presents as vertebral column pain gradually becoming radicular in character; the pain, essentially nocturnal, is spectacularly but transiently relieved by salicylates and is accompanied by often frank stiffness of the spine. The diagnosis is based less on X rays and tomographs, than on isotope bone scanning, which reveals a focus of intense hyperfixation, and CAT scanning which

Osteoid Osteoma Mimicking Brachial Plexopathy in a Child.

Osteoid osteoma, a benign bone tumor, typically affects individuals under the age of 20. It is uncommon in children under five, with an incidence rate of 3%. It affects long bones and usually presents with nocturnal pain that can be treated with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. It is uncommon for osteoid osteoma to present with weakness. We present the case of a four-year-old boy exhibiting right arm weakness for a period of three months, along with floppiness and localized discomfort on the proximal arm. He was found to have proximal and distal muscle weakness in addition to widespread

Proximal femur diaphysis osteoid osteoma mimicking lumbar radiculopathy.

Osteoid osteoma is a benign bone tumor that commonly arises from the metaphyseal and diaphyseal regions of long bones. Pain is often the first symptom, and it can mimic many diseases. Herein, we report a 36-year-old male patient who presented with complaints of lower back pain radiating to the right extremity for a year. In the patient's history, physical therapy, platelet-rich plasma, pregabalin, and duloxetine were used, with the only benefit from indomethacin. An X-ray of the femur was requested, and the diagnosis of osteoid osteoma was confirmed by magnetic resonance imaging. Osteoid osteo

Femur shaft fracture following osteoid osteoma radiofrequency ablation.

INTRODUCTION: Radiofrequency ablation is an effective modality in treating osteoid osteoma while avoiding the complications of an open procedure. Its complications are usually self-limited consisting mostly of local skin burns. This report presents a major complication, a femur shaft fracture following an osteoid osteoma radiofrequency ablation. The fracture occurred approximately one year after the ablation at the site of the osteoid osteoma. DISCUSSION: Few case reports have been published regarding subtrochanteric femur fracture after ablation of an osteoid osteoma. To our knowledge this i

Osteoid osteoma of the elbow mimicking hemophilic arthropathy.

A case of osteoid osteoma of the elbow in a patient with hemophilia A is described. This male patient presented with chronic and nocturnal pain of the left elbow which was alleviated with acetaminophen. Besides pain, he also complained of stiffness. Before these complaints, he had recurrent bleedings in the elbow because of hemophilia. A delayed diagnosis of osteoid osteoma in the proximal part of the left ulna was established by a bone scan and a multislice spiral computed tomography (CT) scan. The lesion was surgically removed under CT-guidance. The histopathological analyses did not show sp

Osteoid osteoma transformation into osteoblastoma: fact or fiction?

BACKGROUND: Osteoid osteoma and osteoblastoma are rare, benign, bone-forming tumours. The clinical presentation, imaging study findings, and course indicate clearly that these two tumours are distinct entities. CLINICAL REPORTS: We report two cases suggesting transformation of osteoid osteoma into osteoblastoma and therefore inviting a discussion of the links between these two tumours. An 11-year-old girl with a small metaphyseal lesion of the proximal tibia was given a diagnosis of osteoid osteoma. Over the next few weeks, worsening pain and marked tumour growth prompted a biopsy, which was

Infraclavicular brachial plexopathy secondary to coracoid osteoid osteoma.

Coracoid osteoid osteomas are rare. This case report presents two patients with coracoid osteoid osteomas who developed neurologic sequelae of the infraclavicular brachial plexus (namely, musculocutaneous neuropathy in one patient with an anterior lesion, and suprascapular neuropathy in the other patient with a more posterior lesion). The neuropathy was due to soft tissue edema, which surrounded the bony lesion and was apparent on MRI. Surgical resection of the bony lesion in both cases produced excellent outcomes at long-term follow-up.

Discrete synchronous multifocal osteoid osteoma of the humerus.

A 24-year-old patient is described who had a 4-year history of pain in the right upper arm, with distinct night pain, that responded to salicylates. From the findings on conventional radiography, bone scintigraphy and MRI a multifocal osteoid osteoma was suspected, with one focus in the cancellous region of the greater tuberosity and a second cortical focus at the proximal humeral diaphysis. The resection "en bloc" of both tumors and histological examination confirmed the diagnosis. The patient was painfree after the curative resection of the two osteoid osteomas. Osteoid osteoma is a frequent

Cryptic osteoid osteoma of the cranium: case report.

Osteoid osteoma is an uncommon benign tumor of bone that rarely involves the cranium. If often causes local pain that is worse at night, characteristically relieved by aspirin, and does not correlate with the size of the lesion. The diagnosis depends on skull radiographs and computed tomography. This report describes a case in which radiographs showed nothing abnormal. The diagnosis and operative localization were accomplished with radionuclide bone scanning. Thus, the possibility of radiographically cryptic lesions must be considered in the evaluation of atypical head pain syndromes.

Bisphosphonates in osteoid osteoma with difficult location in children.

INTRODUCTION: Osteoid osteoma is a benign bone tumor that may cause severe pain. Although percutaneous thermoablation is commonly performed and effective in approximately 90% of cases by rapidly relieving symptoms and avoiding surgery, this procedure may carry significant risks when lesions are located near sensitive anatomical structures such as neural, medullary, or cartilaginous tissues. In these situations, bisphosphonates (BP) may represent a less invasive therapeutic alternative by biologically reducing abnormal bone activity and inflammatory pain. Previous studies have demonstrated the

[Arthroscopic Excision of Osteoid Osteoma of the Femoral Head].

Osteoid osteoma is a primary benign bone tumor with rare intra-articular occurrence. Our case report describes a rare case of a 21-year-old man with long-term severe pain in the right hip region caused by osteoid osteoma managed by arthroscopic excision. The clinical finding of pains and a limited range of motion did not correlate with the normal plain X-ray finding. The osteoid osteoma was suspected based on the CT scan. In literature, several methods of resection of intraarticular osteoid osteoma of the hip are described. Since our department has long specialised in arthroscopic hip surgery

Osteoid osteoma: A pathology that is confused with ankylosing spondylitis.

Osteoid osteoma is a small and benign osteoblastic tumor seen typically in males aged below 25 years. Although it is rarely seen in the vertebrae, it should be considered in the differential diagnosis of spondyloarthropathies, especially for those which occur in young people, along with back and lumbar pain, which increases during the night. Early diagnosis is essential to alle-viate symptoms and prevent the risk of structural spinal deformities, such as scoliosis. Here, we describe the case of a 28-year-old man with vertebral osteoid osteoma that was misdiagnosed as ankylosing spondylitis and

Osteoid Osteoma About the Hip in Children and Adolescents.

BACKGROUND: The etiology of hip pain in pediatric and adolescent patients can be unclear. Osteoid osteoma (OO) about the hip in children has only been described in case reports or small studies. The present study assessed the clinical presentation and diagnostic course, imaging, and treatment approaches in a large cohort of pediatric cases of OO about the hip. METHODS: Medical record and imaging results were reviewed for all cases of OO identified within or around the hip joint in patients <20 years old between January 1, 2003, and December 31, 2015, at a tertiary-care pediatric center.
