BACKGROUND: An ostomy seems a safe alternative in neonates with an acute abdomen when immediate restoration of bowel continuity is deemed undesirable. Faced with several complications in our center, and the feeling we are not the only center with these complications, we decided to assess the rate and type of complications after both ostomy creation and closure.
METHODS: All data regarding neonates (<30 days of age) who underwent a laparotomy for a suspected abdominal emergency in the period 2000 to 2010 were retrospectively analyzed. These data included demographics such as gender, gestationa

BACKGROUND: We investigated an outbreak involving 2 patients hospitalized at hospital A with cutaneous Rhizopus arrhizus (oryzae) infections of surgically created stomas.
METHODS: A cohort study involving all patients having ileostomy or colostomy surgery during the outbreak period (January-April 2005) was performed. Environmental samples, including samples obtained from nonsterile karaya (a plant-derived adhesive) ostomy bags and from select hospital areas, were collected. A point prevalence survey was conducted at 5 unrelated hospitals to assess stoma care practices and mold contamination o

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are commonly used for many gastrointestinal issues, such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), peptic ulcer disease, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Many patients are on life-long daily therapy with this class of medications. The adverse effects of long-term use of PPI have been studied, and over the last two decades, a link between hypomagnesemia and PPI has been established. In addition, other electrolyte derangements can also ensue, such as hypokalemia and hypocalcemia. Losses through the gastrointestinal or renal systems may also be responsible for this e

BACKGROUND: Primary anastomosis (PA) is preferred over ostomy creation in most trauma patients with colon injuries. However, concomitant pancreatic injury is considered as a risk factor for anastomotic breakdown. This study investigates outcomes of PA versus ostomy in patients with associated severe pancreatic injuries.
METHODS: This ACS TQIP study included patients with severe colon injuries requiring resection and associated severe pancreatic injuries (AIS ≥3). Patients were categorized into anastomosis or ostomy groups. Anastomosis patients were propensity score-matched (1:2) to ostomy pat

BACKGROUND: Diverting ostomy creation is commonly performed after traumatic colon injuries, yet data on long-term outcomes, reversal predictors, and ostomy complications in trauma patients remain scarce.
METHODS: A 5-year retrospective review at an urban level 1 trauma center identified patients with colon injuries who underwent ostomy creation. Demographics, follow-up duration, reversal rates, and complications were analyzed. Factors linked to successful reversal were compared.
RESULTS: Among 559 patients who underwent operative colon injury management, 94 received an ostomy. Most were male

BACKGROUND: Ostomy surgery is a common procedure that poses various challenges for patients and healthcare professionals. There are numerous guidelines addressing different ostomy-related problems (ORPs) and supporting an interdisciplinary approach for ostomy care, but evidence-based literature for optimizing drug therapy after ostomy surgery is lacking.
AIM: To investigate and characterize typical ORPs in relation to drug therapy and provide best practice recommendations from a pharmaceutical point of view.
METHODS: Patients with an ileo- or colostomy were consecutively enrolled in a prospe

BACKGROUND: The risks and benefits of pouch excision and end ileostomy creation when compared to the alternative option of a permanent diversion with the pouch left in situ when restoration of intestinal continuity is not pursued for patients who develop pouch failure after IPAA have not been well characterized.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare the early and long-term outcomes after permanent diversion with the pouch left in situ vs pouch excision with end ileostomy creation for pouch failure.
DESIGN: This study is a retrospective review of prospectively gathered data.

BACKGROUND: Given the aging population and increasing incidence of severe intestinal diseases, elderly ostomy patients face home self-management challenges with insufficient care capacity, and the lack of systematically integrated evidence for their specific needs necessitates summarizing the best evidence to support clinical care and improve their quality of life.
METHODS: A computerized literature search was systematically performed to identify studies focusing on home stoma self-management among elderly ostomy patients. The search was conducted across multiple sources, including domestic a

INTRODUCTION: Patients undergoing colorectal surgery with fecal ostomy experience biopsychosocial challenges during recovery. We aimed (1) to describe clinician's perceived challenges with biopsychosocial recovery after ostomy surgery and (2) to examine current solutions to address patient psychosocial challenges while recovering.
METHODS: We conducted qualitative focus groups evaluating clinician perspectives using a semistructured interview guide. Colorectal surgeons, gastrointestinal psychologists, colorectal surgery nurse practitioners, and ostomy nurses were included.

BACKGROUND: The social media platform YouTube is a recognized educational resource for health information, but few studies have explored its value for conveying the lived experience of individuals managing chronic health conditions and end users' interactions with medical device technology. Our study explores self-care strategies and end user needs of people living with a stoma because patient education and engagement in ostomy self-care are essential for avoiding ostomy-related complications. Ostomy surgery creates a stoma (an opening) in the abdomen to alter the route of excreta from digesti

BACKGROUND: Diverting ileostomy and colostomy after total mesorectal excision reduces the risk of complications related to anastomotic leakages but is associated with a reduction in health-related quality of life and long-term economic consequences that are unknown. Our objective was to estimate the lifetime costs of stoma placement after rectal cancer resection in the U.S., England, and Germany.
METHODS: Input parameters were derived from quasi-systematic literature searches. Decision-analytic models with survival from colorectal cancer-adjusted life tables and country-specific stoma reversa

INTRODUCTION: Crohn's disease (CD) has historically been more prevalent among non-Hispanic White populations; however, recent studies demonstrate rising incidence in non-White populations. Despite this shift, limited data exist regarding differences in emergent surgical intervention and ostomy creation in non-White versus White populations. This study evaluated whether non-White pediatric patients with CD experience higher rates of emergent surgical intervention and ostomy creation.
METHODS: The National Surgical Quality Improvement Program Pediatric Database was queried from 2015 to 2021. Pa
