AIDS: responding to the crisis. Pastoral care: helping patients on an inward journey.

AIDS is unique in that it is terminal, transmissible, and surrounded by stigma. AIDS patients are often ostracized by those close to them and frequently they are alienated from religion. The pastoral care giver must provide a special ministry to AIDS patients, a ministry in which he or she accompanies the patient on a journey inward. This journey involves a broad range of feelings related to such concerns as social alienation, emotional isolation, and preparation for death. Its final destination, however, lies in the ultimate issues such as self-identity, the meaning of life, and individual de

Reactivity to exclusion prospectively predicts social anxiety symptoms in young adults.

Peer victimization leads to negative outcomes such as increased anxiety and depression. The prospective relationship between peer victimization and social anxiety in children and adolescents is well established, and adults with social anxiety disorder (SAD) are more likely than individuals with other anxiety disorders to report a history of teasing. However, a crucial bridge between these findings (peer victimization in young adults) is missing. We manipulated perceptions of peer exclusion in a young adult sample (N=108) using the Cyberball Ostracism Task. Reactivity to exclusion prospectively

Addressing HIV and Substance Use Health Disparities among Racial/Ethnic Minority Individuals.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Advances in HIV testing, prevention, and treatment, alongside increased awareness and harm reduction efforts for substance use disorder (SUD) have improved care and treatment access over the past decade. However, racial and ethnic minorities with SUD and HIV or at risk for HIV still face disproportionately high health disparities. Understanding and addressing the reasons behind these disparities is crucial. RECENT FINDINGS: Structural and systemic barriers continue to negatively impact minoritized communities, due to lack of access to care, mistrust, and feelings of ostraci

Knowledge, attitude and practice towards AIDS among civil servants in Nigeria.

A study about knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) towards AIDS was carried out amongst 340 randomly selected workers in Benin City in Nigeria using self-administered questionnaires. Three hundred and thirty (97.1%) of the workers were aware of the existence of AIDS but only 50 (14.7%) had the correct knowledge of the aetiology of AIDS, and of these 29 (8.5%) had tertiary education. Generally there was a good knowledge of the different routes of transmission except for the erroneous belief by a high number, 125 (36.8%) and 129 (37.9%) that it could be transmitted through sharing of utensils

[Issues and difficulties in the relationship between patients and caregivers in painful sickle cell vaso-occlusive crisis].

Sickle cell patients in acute pain situation experiment cognitive, behavioral and emotional changes that can accentuate their pain and disrupt communication with caregivers. On the other hand, caregivers have to face pain assessment difficulties and their own psychological reactions to their patient's pain. The gap between the patient's experience and caregiver's evaluation can lead to conflict and non-adherence treatment, and have a direct impact on the sickle cell disease prognosis. There is nothing inevitable about these phenomena, whose knowledge allows the action and opens up prospects fo

Infertility in resource-constrained settings: moving towards amelioration.

It is often presumed that infertility is not a problem in resource-poor areas where fertility rates are high. This is challenged by consistent evidence that the consequences of childlessness are very severe in low-income countries, particularly for women. In these settings, childless women are frequently stigmatized, isolated, ostracized, disinherited and neglected by the family and local community. This may result in physical and psychological abuse, polygamy and even suicide. Attitudes among people in high-income countries towards provision of infertility care in low-income countries have mo

One size doesn't fit all: contouring and addressing social vitals in reversing tobacco epidemic in Punjab, India.

There are many tobacco users who wish to quit. In some cases, ostracism related to religious proscriptions serves as a barrier and prevents them from revealing their addiction status. Religion as an institution has an immense influence on human behaviour. It contributes to the cultural identity of individuals, moderating uniformity in their behaviour and social life. We describe a case from a province in Punjab in North India, where tobacco use is a 'taboo' due to the widely practised faith of Sikhism. The case illustrates how a doctoral thesis student, along with the healthcare providers at a

Amedeo Modigliani and his "great secret": a brief history of medical and social aspects of tuberculosis in the nineteenth and early twentieth century.

The pathography of the famous painter and sculptor Amedeo Modigliani (1884-1920) shows that he had tuberculosis and died of tubercular meningitis aged 35. The nineteenth century was characterized by numerous milestones in the history of tuberculosis. In 1853, Hermann Brehmer, first used the term tuberculosis referred to at the time as "phthisis". In 1865, Jean Antoine Villemin demonstrated the infectious etiology of the disease. This was confirmed in 1882 by Robert Koch by identifying the tubercle bacillus. Koch also invented the diagnostic tuberculin test. Charles Mantoux and Florence Seibert

"I AM NOT A VIRUS": COVID-19, Anti-Asian Hate, and Comics as Counternarratives.

Ever since the global spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, East Asians across the globe have been ostracized, othered, pathologized, and subjected to numerous anti-Asian hate crimes. Despite contemporary China's rapid modernization, the country is still perceived as an Oriental and primitive site. Taking these cues, the current article aims to investigate the Sinophobic attitudes in the wake of COVID-19 through a detailed analysis of sequential comics and cartoons by artists of East Asian descent, such as Laura Gao and Lisa Wool-Rim Sjöblom. Drawing theoretical insights from Alexandre Whit

Campus diversity, Jewishness, and antisemitism.

To explore current attitudes among Jewish students, faculty, and leaders of Jewish campus organizations regarding the putative exclusion of Jewish concerns from campus dialogs around diversity, we recruited 40 such individuals to engage in a semi-structured interview. The consensus among our interviewees was that there is a significant, ongoing, and too-often overlooked problem with virulent anti-Israel activity on many campuses that often seeps into antisemitism; that many, though not all, Jewish students are disturbed by this phenomena; that the consequences of anti-Israel hostility on some

"They Looked at Me Like I Was Crazy": Practitioner Experiences Among People Engaging in Hair-Pulling.

Trichotillomania is a disorder affecting 1-2% of the population during their lifetime and is characterised by recurrent hair-pulling that often leads to distress, low self-esteem, social ostracism, and lowered relationship satisfaction. Despite the availability of effective therapies, individuals with trichotillomania frequently report dissatisfaction with clinical care. This qualitative study explored the experiences of 20 adults with trichotillomania, focusing on their interactions with mental health practitioners. Using reflexive thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews, we construct

This study investigates people who have sex with animals (PSA) by describing their living situation, sexual activity, beliefs, and attitudes toward stigmatization. These data are highly applicable to the work of psychiatric and forensic professionals investigating paraphilias. We apply mixed-methods approach, using qualitative and quantitative analyses. The findings come from anonymous forum postings of 953 participants; of which 345 agreed to complete a survey upon advertising the study. We identify several themes, describing concerns of zoosexuals chatting within online communities: living s

'I won't be able to go home being pregnant': sex work and pregnancy in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Sex workers report high rates of unintended pregnancy that are inconsistent with widespread reports of condom use. Greater understanding of the implications of an unintended pregnancy and barriers to contraceptive use is needed to better meet the broader sexual and reproductive health needs of this population. We conducted in-depth interviews with 20 women sex workers in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Findings reveal that most women are trying to conform to societal norms and protect their reputations. They fear pregnancy would reveal that they are having unsanctioned sex and that they are sex workers. Th

Our Father who art in prison: Conviction and rehabilitation for Australian Catholic clergy who are child sexual offenders.

In light of the Royal Commission into Institutional Child Sexual Abuse, this article analyses the custodial sentences of 143 Australian Catholic clergy. The majority of these sentences were for convictions for indecent assault for which the median sentence was two years' imprisonment. It is doubtful whether the Australian community would consider such sentences as adequate, particularly where offences were against children. Current Australian legislation allows for ongoing long-term sanctions, including judicial orders for chemical castration, to be imposed on convicted sex offenders, especial

Effi Briest: The Uncanny, sexuality, and trauma.

Here the author draws on Theodor Fontane's 1895 novel Effi Briest to consider the links between Freud's paper "The Uncanny" and his elaboration of the trauma of sexuality and the après-coup. Conceptualizing trauma in contemporary clinical theory inevitably draws on the theory of the après-coup: the blow that is inflicted on the psyche when the impact of the early event is retranscribed at a later date. The author considers the trauma that Effi experiences, not the catastrophic trauma of death or assault but the deceptive trauma, is disguised as an unparalleled opportunity for Effi. Her story h

Biological and social implications of a medieval burial from Cyprus for understanding leprosy in the past.

An early 15th-century burial from a basilica at Polis Chrysochous provides the first archaeological evidence of leprosy in Cyprus, extending the temporal depth and illuminating the biological and social history of this disease on the island. The skeletal remains of a young adult female (age 20-34 years) display pathognomonic features of lepromatous leprosy including maxillary alveolar resorption with antemortem loss of all but one incisor, remodeling of the margin of the nasal sill and resorption of the anterior nasal spine, with diaphyseal remodeling of hand and foot phalanges and the distal

"We Copy to Join in, to Not Be Lonely": Adolescents in Special Education Reflect on Using Dramatic Imitation in Group Dramatherapy to Enhance Relational Connection and Belonging.

This paper focuses on doctoral research which explored relationships and interpersonal learning through group dramatherapy and creative interviewing with adolescents in special education. A constructivist grounded theory study, positioning adolescents with intellectual/developmental disabilities as experts of their own relational experiences, revealed a tendency to "copy others." The final grounded theory presented "copying" as a tool which participants consciously employed "to play with," "learn from," and "join in with" others. Commonly experiencing social ostracism, participants reflected a

A Lifesaving View of Vascularized Composite Allotransplantation: Patient Experience of Social Death Before and After Face, Hand, and Larynx Transplant.

INTRODUCTION: Most solid organ transplantation is viewed as lifesaving, whereas vascularized composite allotransplantation (VCA) has been viewed as life enhancing. This article challenges the latter and argues that "social death" evident in severe face, hand, and larynx disfigurement can be potentially treated via VCA. Social death (from a social science perspective) consists of a combination of 7 components: social isolation, loneliness, ostracism, loss of personhood, change of role and identity, harm, and disfigurement. METHODS: In February 2016, PubMed and Google were searched for case rep

Multiple chemical sensitivity: It's time to catch up to the science.

Multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) is a complex medical condition associated with low dose chemical exposures. MCS is characterized by diverse features and common comorbidities, including fibromyalgia, cough hypersensitivity, asthma, and migraine, and stress/anxiety, with which the syndrome shares numerous neurobiological processes and altered functioning within diverse brain regions. Predictive factors linked to MCS comprise genetic influences, gene-environment interactions, oxidative stress, systemic inflammation, cell dysfunction, and psychosocial influences. The development of MCS may be

How Social Responses to Child Sexual Abuse and Intimate Partner Violence Affect Homelessness Among Women in Two Rural Regions With Resource-Based Economies in Eastern Quebec.

This study presents findings from a qualitative study conducted in two relatively remote, primarily rural regions of the Canadian province of Quebec whose resource-based economic structures exacerbate inequalities between men and women. The purpose of this study was to understand how violence and homelessness intertwine in women's life courses in such regions. On the basis of past research showing that gender socialization around traditional roles and conservative values is particularly tenacious in non-urban areas, we conducted life-course interviews with 22 women in 13 different towns and vi
