[Surgical treatment of juvenile nasopharyngeal angifibroma].

Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma represents non-incapsulated benign tumor. It can lead to serious problems with the extension into nearest structures. Recidivism is described in 20 to 30 % of cases, after surgical or other adjuvant therapy. Three patients with juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma that underwent surgery in a five year period (2001-2005) at the ENT Clinic of the University Clinical Center in Sarajevo are evaluated in this paper. No complications were encountered during surgical procedure and early postoperative period. Recidivism are not noted two years after the surgery. Su

[Arterial and venous digital subtraction angiography. A current study technic for otorhinolaryngology].

Digital subtraction angiography (DSA) is a rather new radiographic technique for imaging different vascular alterations, particularly in the head and neck area, and can replace angiography in most cases. Nevertheless, routine application of DSA - intravenously or intraarterially - seems to present a problem to many clinicists. In the present paper, therefore, we try to introduce these important techniques by means of several examples from patients who have undergone these procedures to demonstrate the actual indications of DSA for oto-rhino-laryngological diseases.

Oncocytic carcinoma of the parotid gland: case report and review of the literature.

OBJECTIVES: To date 70 cases of oncocytic carcinomas (OCs) have been described in 55 reports. We describe an OC of the parotid gland in a 56-year-old man with simultaneous breast cancer. METHODS: In June 2006, a 56-year-old man was referred to the Otorhinolaryngology Division for a painless right preauricolar mass. The facial nerve was functionally normal. Total parotidectomy with facial nerve preservation was performed. In January 2007, the patient was referred to the Surgical Division for a left mammary nodule. Total mastectomy with axillary lymphoadenectomy was performed. RESULTS: The mas

Pattern of parotid gland tumors on Crete, Greece: a retrospective study of 131 cases.

BACKGROUND: Salivary gland tumors constitute a highly heterogeneous group. There are few large epidemiological studies of benign and malignant salivary gland tumors in Greece. The aim of the present study was to define the pattern of parotid gland neoplasms on the island of Crete. MATERIAL/METHODS: The medical records of 131 patients who underwent parotidectomy in the Otorhinolaryngology department of the University hospital of Heraklion over the last ten years were retrospectively reviewed. Gender and age of the patients, size, location, and histology of the tumors, as well as postoperative

Clinico-histopathological review of 255 patients who underwent parotidectomy for pleomorphic adenoma: a 10-year retrospective study-a proposal for an optimal diagnostic and therapeutic algorithm for patients with recurrent pleomorphic adenoma.

PURPOSE: Pleomorphic adenoma (mixed tumor) is the most common neoplasm of the parotid gland and one of the most frequent types of salivary gland tumor, generally with benign behavior and relatively slow growing. The adenomas could arise from the superficial, deep or from both superficial and deep parotid's lobes. METHODS: The aim of this review is to retrospectively analyze the surgical management of patients with pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland performed at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology (Department of Sense Organs of "Azienda Policlinico Umberto I" in Rome), from 2010 to 202

Immunohistochemical analysis of CD71, CD98 and CD99 activation antigens in human palatine and nasopharyngeal tonsils.

OBJECTIVE: Tonsils (palatine and nasopharyngeal) are immunologically active tissues. Due to their anatomical location, they are considered to be the initial defense barrier against the antigens entering into the respiratory and gastrointestinal tract. Tonsils act against these antigens by producing and activating the lymphocytes, which are responsible for the immune response. In order to get information regarding the distribution of cell surface antigens on the epithelial, stromal and lymphoid cells of these organs, we performed immunohistochemical staining by using antibodies against CD99, CD

[Skin tumors in facial plastic surgery].

As the incidence of facial skin tumors is rising, otorhinolaryngologists are becoming more and more involved in the field of facial plastic surgery. The most common tumor locations on the head are the sun-exposed areas such as the nose, forehead, cheek, and auricle. The most common histologic findings are actinic keratosis and basal cell carcinoma. In planning tumor resection and defect repair, many factors, including histology, size, and localization of the tumor as well as conditions of the adjacent skin, must be considered. The key to defect repair after tumor resection is to choose the mos

A 14-year-old boy with extranodal natural killer cell lymphoma of the nose, nasopharynx, larynx, and trachea in remission 6years after primary diagnosis. A longitudinal case report.

Nasal type extranodal natural killer/T-cell lymphoma (ENKTL) is a rare lymphoma in the USA and Europe but endemic in East Asia and in areas of South and Central America. Clinically natural killer cell lymphomas are divided into three categories; nasal, non-nasal and aggressive lymphoma/leukemia subtypes. ENKTL, nasal type occurs in the nose and can extend to the upper aero-digestive tract as reported in this longitudinal case study. This is a longitudinal report of progress of a 14-year-old boy with ENKTL originating in the nasal cavity with subsequent extension and recurrence in the contralat

Paediatric ultrasound. II. Other applications.

This article focuses on small-parts US in children. The differential diagnosis of cystic neck masses primarily includes lymphangiomas, thyroglossal duct cysts and branchial cleft cysts. Solid masses may be represented from lymphadenopathies, cervical extensions of mediastinal thymus, fibromatosis colli, rhabdomyosarcomas and neuroblastomas. Salivary gland lesions are uncommon in children. Thyroid is best evaluated by US and nuclear scintigraphy. If US shows abnormal thyroid gland, the isotopic scan may be a good complementary method to confirm the diagnosis. Normal parathyroid glands are not v

A systematic review of surgical outcomes for advanced juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma with intracranial involvement.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Although transnasal endoscopic resection has become an established treatment for most juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (JNA), surgical management of JNA with intracranial extension remains challenging. This study systematically reviews the JNA literature to determine surgical outcomes. STUDY DESIGN: Systematic review. METHODS: A systematic search of the PubMed was undertaken using a combination of MeSH terms: angiofibroma, nasopharynx. The search was limited to articles published in the English language between January 1990 and April 2012. Each article was reviewed

[Ultrasound diagnosis of face and neck organs].

Sonography of the neck and face is highly suited for confirming visible, palpable or generally tentative findings. A method of performing a systematic examination will be described in detail and followed by numerous examples descriptive of soft tissue pathologies of the face, salivary glands and lymph nodes. The thyroid gland will be dealt with in a different report. The criterion that applied to all masses was that it was only possible to render a tentative diagnosis to be subsequently confirmed by sonography-guided fine-needle aspiration. Histological follow-up, however, was never excluded.

Surgical therapy of T1 and selected cases of T2 glottic carcinoma: cordectomy, horizontal glottectomy and CO2 laser endoscopic resection.

AIMS AND BACKGROUND: Among the different laryngeal neoplasms, glottic carcinoma is known to be one of the most suitable for functional management. Nevertheless, the best treatment for T1 and T2 glottic carcinoma, whether an open neck procedure, endoscopy or radiotherapy, with reference to recurrence, survival, and functional results, has long been debated. STUDY DESIGN: From February 1983 to September 1997, 83 patients with well to undifferentiated glottic carcinoma (48 pT1a, 14 pT1b, and 21 selected cases of pT2 with impairment of vocal cord mobility) were submitted to surgery at the Otorhin

Diet and Health in Otolaryngology.

Diet is essential to health and can modulate inflammatory markers, the microbiota, and epigenetic outcomes. Proper nutrition is also key to good postsurgical outcomes. Diet is challenging to study, resulting in a relative dearth of influential studies. There is substantial evidence regarding the benefits of a whole food plant-predominant diet on health and longevity, in general, but limited evidence regarding otolaryngologic disorders. Diet may be associated with the risk of head and neck cancer, hearing loss, laryngopharyngeal reflux, and sinonasal symptoms. Evidence, however, is heterogenous

A shifting paradigm for patients with head and neck cancer: transoral robotic surgery (TORS).

The evolution of surgical oncologic technology has moved toward reducing patient morbidity without compromising oncologic resection. In head and neck surgery, organ-preserving techniques have paved the way for the development of transoral techniques that remove tumors of the upper aerodigestive tract without external incisions and potentially spare the patient adjuvant treatment. The introduction of transoral robotic surgery (TORS) improves upon current transoral techniques to the oropharynx and supraglottis. This review will report on the evolution of robotic-assisted surgery: We will cover i

Dedifferentiated liposarcoma of the pyriform sinus: report of a case and review of the literature.

Laryngeal and hypopharyngeal liposarcomas are extraordinarily infrequent tumors. To the best of our knowledge there are fewer than 40 well-documented cases reported to date. Almost all of them are well-differentiated liposarcomas, with only 2 laryngeal-hypopharyngeal dedifferentiated liposarcomas. Dedifferentiated liposarcoma is defined as a well-differentiated liposarcoma with areas of high-grade spindle cell nonlipogenic sarcoma. The well-differentiated areas may be of a lipoma-like, sclerosing, or mixed type, and the dedifferentiated areas most frequently are of malignant fibrous hystiocyto

Robotic Surgery - Who is The Boss?

In the head and neck region, great potential is seen in robot-assisted surgery (RAS). Mainly in cancer surgery, the use of robotic systems seems to be of interest. Until today, two robotic systems (DaVinci® und FLEX®) have gained approval for clinical use in the head and neck region, and multiple other systems are currently in pre-clinical testing. Although, certain groups of patients may benefit from RAS, no unbiased randomized clinical studies are available. Until today, it was not possible to satisfactorily prove any advantage of RAS as compared to standard procedures. The limited clinical
