Ovarian cyst and autonomic dysreflexia.

Autonomic dysreflexia may present itself as a medical emergency in quadriplegics and paraplegics above the T6 level. Common causes are bladder/bowel dysfunction and pressure ulcers. A case study is presented in which an ovarian cyst was the cause of autonomic dysreflexia. Excision of the ovarian cyst stopped recurrence of paroxysmal hypertension and completely alleviated signs and symptoms of autonomic dysreflexia.

[Surgical treatment of giant ovarian cysts in adolescents].

Cystic lesions of the ovaries are common in adolescent girls. Follow-up is recommended to monitor any changes in size. In more than 90% of cases, these cysts are benign. Our aim is to draw attention to the fact, that even extremely large lesions can develop during puberty and in every case our goal is to perform accurate imaging and organ-preserving surgical management. Between 2023 and 2025, four adolescent girls underwent surgery for giant cystic ovarian lesions at the Department of Pediatric Surgery of the Győr-Moson-Sopron County Petz Aladár University Teaching Hospital. We performed a det

Neonatal ovarian cysts: ultrasound assessment and differential diagnosis.

Ovarian cysts are the most common abdominal cysts in female fetuses and newborn girls. Ultrasonography is the imaging technique of choice for diagnosing ovarian cysts because it makes it possible to differentiate them from other cystic lesions. Although most neonatal ovarian cysts regress in the first few months after birth, complications can occur during gestation or after birth. The manifestations of ovarian cysts on ultrasonography will depend on the complications. The management is controversial, although the current trend favors watchful waiting. We describe the different presentations of

Cochrane Update. Oral contraceptives for functional ovarian cysts.

BACKGROUND: Functional ovarian cysts are a common gynecological problem among women of reproductive age worldwide. When large, persistent, or painful, these cysts may require operations, sometimes resulting in removal of the ovary. Since early oral contraceptives were associated with a reduced incidence of functional ovarian cysts, many clinicians inferred that birth control pills could be used to treat cysts as well. This became a common clinical practice in the early 1970s. OBJECTIVES: This review examined all randomized controlled trials that studied oral contraceptives as therapy for func

Three cases of ovarian epidermoid cysts in cattle.

Three cases of bovine, ovarian epidermoid cysts were diagnosed as unilateral benign lesions in three out of 1,971 cows at slaughter. A stratified, cornifying, and squamous epithelium without associated skin adnexal structures or tissues from other embryonic tissue layers lined the cysts. The cysts were small, usually multiple, and contained keratin debris. Macroscopically, they resembled abscesses. These are benign, congenital lesions that are a separate entity from dermoids and teratomas, and they appear to have a higher incidence in cattle with Bos indicus breeding.

Ovarian cysts, cytology and histology: a conflicting story.

Ovarian cysts from 27 selected patients were examined cytologically as well as histologically. The aspirates were obtained by means of ultrasound or laparoscopy. Cytological examination in 17 of the cases did not show malignancy, but histological examination demonstrated malignancy in 5 of these patients. The fluid of the other 10 cysts indicated malignancy, which was confirmed histologically in only 4 cases. From this study we conclude that cytological examination has little to offer in diagnosing the true nature of ovarian cysts.

Diagnosis and treatment of ovarian cysts in children.

Seventeen girls were treated following the diagnosis of ovarian cysts. Four patients were operated on within the first 6 months of age and the other 13 patients were 10-15 years old at the time of diagnosis. Antenatal diagnosis was made in 3 cases. The presenting symptoms in the infants were distended abdomen in 3 cases, abdominal pain in 1 and vomiting in 1. In the older children the presenting symptoms were abdominal pain in 12, vomiting in 5 and elevated temperature in 6. Preoperative ultrasound was performed in 5 patients, 3 neonates and 2 older children. Sixteen of the 17 girls were opera

Prenatal diagnosis and management of fetal ovarian cysts.

Congenital ovarian cysts are a pathological condition which can be diagnosed in utero by ultrasound. We report 14 consecutive diagnoses of fetal ovarian cysts, obtained in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy. Congenital ovarian cysts have almost invariably a good prognosis, and no change in the standard obstetrical management is required. However, the evolution of the disease in utero is extremely variable. The cyst may increase in size, decrease or even disappear, or undergo complications such as torsion and rupture, which may carry some risks to the fetus. When a fetal ovarian cyst

Dienogest attenuates STAT3 activation in ovarian endometriotic cysts.

OBJECTIVE: Recent studies have suggested that endometriosis could be the result of excessive activation of signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3), which is associated with the regulation of essential cellular mechanisms such as proliferation, invasion, and apoptosis. That finding implies that regulating STAT3 activation could play a key role in treating endometriosis. In the present study, we aimed to evaluate whether the anti-endometriotic effects of dienogest is mediated by the regulation of STAT3 activation. STUDY DESIGN: STAT3 activation was evaluated in normal endomet

Percutaneous drainage without sclerotherapy for benign ovarian cysts.

PURPOSE: To evaluate percutaneous short-term catheter drainage in the management of benign ovarian cysts in patients at increased surgical risk. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-eight patients with simple ovarian cysts were treated with drainage of fluid content by catheters until output stopped. All patients were poor candidates for surgery. All procedures were performed under ultrasonographic (US) control and local anesthesia. Cytologic examination was performed in all cases. The patients were followed up monthly with color Doppler US for 12 months. Outcome measure was the recurrence of a cyst

Fetal and neonatal ovarian cysts: is surgery indicated?

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the frequency of ovarian torsion in neonates with ovarian cysts (OCs) and to analyze the outcome after surgical treatment. METHODS: A retrospective review of all infants with OCs managed in our institution during 20 years, was conducted. Our management included a follow-up (FU) of prenatal serial ultrasound (US) scan without prenatal cyst aspiration and early postnatal US scan. Neonatal surgery was indicated for cysts that appeared complex regardless of size and for simple cysts larger than 20 mm. RESULTS: Sixty-seven OCs detected through prenatal diagnosis were ident

Diet and risk of seromucinous benign ovarian cysts.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the relation between selected dietary indicators and the risk of seromucinous benign ovarian cysts. STUDY DESIGN: We used data from a case-control study on risk factors for benign ovarian cysts conducted in Italy between 1984 and 1994. Cases included 225 women with a histologically confirmed diagnosis of benign seromucinous ovarian neoplasm dating back no more than 2 years. Controls were 450 women below the age of 65 years admitted for acute non-gynecological, non-hormonal, non-neoplastic conditions. RESULTS: Women with seromucinous cysts reported more frequent consumpt

Prenatal diagnosis and clinical outcome of ovarian cysts.

Technical refinements of ultrasound (US) have greatly affected the antenatal diagnosis and treatment of ovarian cysts. From 1985 to 1990 25 consecutive fetuses with ovarian cysts were followed-up by US both during pregnancy and postnatally. All cases were diagnosed between the 28th and 39th weeks of gestation. Deliveries were all at term; cesarean section was required only for obstetric complications. Eight fetuses (32%) showed US patterns of cyst torsion, a finding confirmed at surgery in all. In five patients US patterns suggested complications postnatally that were also confirmed at operati

Peritoneal inclusion cysts: ovarian fluid in peritoneal adhesions.

In four women pelvic peritoneal inclusion cysts were diagnosed with ultrasound or computed tomography. Three patients had a history of multiple surgical procedures, whereas the fourth had prior severe abdominal trauma. Imaging studies showed large cystic structures contiguous with the adnexa. The normal ovarian appearance was distorted in two women. Pathologic confirmation was obtained in all cases. When large adnexal cystic structures are identified in young women with a history of surgery or trauma, the diagnosis of peritoneal inclusion cysts should be entertained. Recognition should result

Fetal ovarian cysts: a report of five cases.

Large fetal ovarian cysts are rare; however, widespread use of antenatal ultrasound examination has led to an increased detection rate and surgical removal. A case presenting with bowel obstruction is described along with four other cases that presented in the last 24 years. Previously reported series are reviewed and compared. It is stressed that complications are very rare and hasty surgical management of cases detected by ultrasound scanning is not warranted.
