A case of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) associated with spontaneous pregnancy is reported with the hope of facilitating earlier recognition of this condition. Although OHSS is usually an iatrogenic complication, it can also occur spontaneously without any evidence of endocrinological disorder. Surgery was performed and induced a very rapid resolution of ovarian hyperstimulation.

Severe ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) leads to changes in laboratory analyte concentrations. Whereas elevated aminotransferase activity is often observed, a cholestatic course with hyperbilirubinaemia and icterus seldom occurs. In this report, the case of a 33 year old patient with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is described who, after stimulation with human menopausal gonadotrophin (HMG), developed severe OHSS with haemoconcentration, ascites, hydrothorax, elevated aminotransferases, hyperbilirubinaemia and icterus. The patient did not become pregnant and the OHSS regressed, toget

A case of adnexal torsion of an enlarged ovary during early pregnancy after gonadotropin therapy is presented. Adnexal torsion is a rare but serious complication to ovarian hyperstimulation. The diagnosis is difficult, but the combination of ovarian enlargement, abdominal pain, nausea, progressive leukocytosis and anaemia may indicate torsion of the adnex. Prompt diagnosis is important. Simple unwinding of the twisted adnex by a laparoscopic technique has been successful in most cases.

Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) is a complication of assisted reproductive treatments such as in vitro fertilization (IVF). The pathophysiology of severe OHSS includes a humorally mediated capillary leak syndrome that is predominantly centered on the intra-abdominal space. Severe OHSS is frequently complicated by acute kidney injury (AKI), which can be due to any of a variety of mechanisms, each requiring a different management strategy. Mechanisms of AKI in severe OHSS include intravascular volume depletion, kidney edema due to capillary leak, intra-abdominal hypertension or compartm

BACKGROUND: Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) is an iatrogenic and potentially life threatening condition resulting from excessive ovarian stimulation. Reported incidence of moderate to severe OHSS ranges from 0.6% to 5% of in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycles. The factors contributing to OHSS have not been completely explained. The release of vasoactive substances secreted by the ovaries under human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) stimulation may play a key role in triggering this syndrome. This condition is characterised by a massive shift of fluid from the intravascular compartment to t

The ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome is the combination of increased ovarian volume, due to the presence of multiple cysts and vascular hyperpermeability, with subsequent hypovolemia and hemoconcentration. We report a case of spontaneous syndrome in a singleton pregnancy. This was a spontaneous pregnancy with 12 weeks of gestational age. The pregnancy was uneventful until 11 weeks of gestational age. After that, the pregnant woman complained of progressive abdominal distention associated with abdominal discomfort. She did not report other symptoms. In the first trimester, a routine ultrasonog

OBJECTIVE: To identify, appraise and summarize the current evidence regarding the pathophysiology, staging, prediction and prevention of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS).
METHODS: Two comprehensive systematic reviews were carried out: one examined methods of predicting either high ovarian response or OHSS and the other examined interventions aimed at reducing the occurrence of OHSS. Additionally, we describe the related pathophysiology and staging criteria.
RESULTS: Seven studies examining methods of predicting OHSS and eight more examining methods of predicting high ovarian response

Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) is a potentially life-threatening complication, usually iatrogenic after ovulation induction. OHSS is a very rare event in spontaneously conceived pregnancies. Only few cases have been reported in literature to the best of our knowledge. We report a very rare case of spontaneous critical OHSS (according to classification of severity of OHSS as mentioned in Greentop guidelines no. 5, 2006) associated with triplet pregnancy in a 26-year-old woman suffering from severe abdominal pain, distension, and dyspnea. Our case highlights the importance of a strong

Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) is a morbid, iatrogenic, and potentially lethal condition caused by the pharmacological induction of ovulation. In OHSS, the ovaries are the site of significant stromal edema with bilateral cystic ovarian enlargement. It has been suggested that ascitic fluid accumulation may be due to increased capillary permeability, which results in fluid shift from the intravascular to the extravascular compartment. While the exact etiology is not clear, several biochemical markers are considered to be possible mediators. There is an incidence of OHSS in about 3% to

Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome is the most dangerous complication following the administration of gonadotropins. There is no preventive and pharmacological intervention that can fully prevent development of this syndrome. The best strategy to reduce the incidence of the condition is to identify the patients at risk before ovarian stimulation and to recognize potential predictors. A history of ovarian hyperstimulation is an important risk factor for recurrence of the syndrome. The risk of the syndrome is evident with elevated gonadotropin dosages and with the use of gonadotropin releasing ho

Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) is one of the most important complications of assisted reproductive technologies. Mild OHSS is characterized by ovarian enlargement and abdominal discomfort. In severe cases anasarca, hepatic dysfunction, reduced blood volume, electrolyte imbalance, organ failure and thromboembolic phenomena may be observed. Delirium is a syndrome, not a disease, and has many causes, all of which result in a similar pattern of signs and symptoms relating to a patient's level of consciousness and cognitive impairment. Delirium remains an under-recognized and under-diagno

Ovulation induction is a treatment that aimed to increase the pregnancy probability by increasing the follicular grow up and maturation. The most frequent complication is ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS). Pleural effusion and abdominal ascites accumulation is frequently accompany this syndrome. A young patient receiving ovulation induction therapy was admitted to our department with sudden chest pain and dyspnea. Exudative pleural effusion was determined in the right and we suggest that pleural effusion was accumulated due to OHSS because of the presence of abdominal ascites, hemoconce

INTRODUCTION: Pleural effusions occurring in the ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHS) are frequently associated with haemoconcentration.
OBSERVATIONS: We report three cases of symptomatic pleurisy with ascites, requiring therapeutic pleural aspiration. Biochemical analysis of these effusions may give rise to confusion as consideration of the pleural fluid protein levels in isolation may lead to the incorrect diagnosis of an exudate. On account of the electrolyte disorders and haemoconcentration seen in OHS a pleural fluid protein level of over 30 g per litre (the traditional definition of
