In utero exposure to the oestrogen mimic diethylstilbestrol disrupts gonadal development in a viviparous reptile.

The ubiquitous presence of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in the environment is of major concern. Studies on oviparous reptiles have significantly advanced knowledge in this field; however, 30% of reptilian species are viviparous (live-bearing), a parity mode in which both yolk and a placenta support embryonic development, thus exposure to EDCs may occur via multiple routes. In this first study of endocrine disruption in a viviparous lizard (Niveoscincus metallicus), we aimed to identify effects of the oestrogen mimic diethylstilbestrol (DES) on gonadal development. At the initiation of

Effects of repeated injection of kisspeptin-10 on the initiation of egg-laying in juvenile quail.

The kisspeptin (Kp) signaling pathway plays an essential role in the onset of reproduction in mammals. To investigate the effects of Kp on the initiation of egg laying in birds, juvenile female quail were given daily intraperitoneal injections of 300μl saline (control, Con), or 10nmol (low dosage, L) or 100nmol (high dosage, H) kisspeptin-10 (Kp-10) dissolved in 300μl saline for 3 weeks. The ratio of egg laying of quail in the L and H groups was notably increased compared to that of the Con group (P<0.01), which paralleled earlier ovarian growth and increases in circulating estrogen (E(2)) con

Chronic effects assessment and plasma concentrations of the beta-blocker propranolol in fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas).

The presence of many human pharmaceuticals in the aquatic environment is now a worldwide concern, yet little is known of the chronic effects that these bioactive substances may be having on aquatic organisms. Propranolol, a non-specific beta adrenoreceptor blocker (beta-blocker), is used to treat high blood pressure and heart disease in humans. Propranolol has been found in surface waters worldwide at concentrations ranging from 12 to 590ng/L. To test the potential for ecologically relevant effects in fish in receiving waters, short-term (21 days) adult reproduction studies were conducted, in

Evolution of aquatic snails' defences resulted in clade-specific differences in egg toxicity, pigments and warning coloration.

Oviparous animals have evolved diverse strategies that deter egg predation. In terrestrial species, these often include noxious compounds and aposematic signalling, but little is known in freshwater environments. Here, we unravel the evolutionary and ecological strategies of Pomacea, aquatic snails that lay conspicuous masses of toxic orange-pink eggs to reduce predation risk. We reveal the interplay among warning coloration, toxicity and predator visual perception that enables the evolution of advanced chemical defences. We provide evidence that snails modify dietary carotenoids and that this

A bioinformatic approach to characterize the vitellogenin receptor and the low density lipoprotein receptor superfamily in the newt Cynops orientalis.

The Low Density Lipoprotein receptors (LDLRs) gene family includes 15 receptors: very low-density lipoprotein receptor (VLDLR), LDLR, Sorting-related receptor with A-type repeats (SORLA), and 12 LDL receptor-related proteins (LRPs): LRP1, LRP1B, LRP2, LRP3, LRP4, LRP5, LRP6, LRP8, LRP10, LRP11, LRP12, LRP13. Most of these are involved in the transduction of key signals during embryonic development and in the regulation of cholesterol homeostasis. In oviparous animals, the VLDL receptor is also known as VTGR since it facilitates the uptake of vitellogenin in ovary. In tetrapods, information con

Physiological responses of catfish liver to katuk extract, turmeric powder, and vitamin C supplementation in the diet during ovarium development.

BACKGROUND: The success of reproduction in oviparous animals is determined by the optimum vitellogenin deposition in the follicles. Vitellogenin is synthesized by hepatocytes in response to estrogen stimulation. Hepatocyte functionalities are important for the production of vitellogenin. This research was designed to increase liver function using catfish as a model. AIM: Hepatocyte function can be improved by katuk extract, turmeric powder, and vitamin C supplementation. METHODS: The experiment consisted of eight treatments and three repetitions. The treatments were administered for 8 weeks.

In vivo direct cell-penetrating peptide mediated protein transduction system in Acyrthosiphon pisum.

OBJECTIVE: The principal delivery method for CRISPR-based genome editing in insects is now based on microinjection into single cells or embryos. The direct protein transduction systems cannot be employed in aphids because oogenesis occurs without apparent vitellogenesis. Given the limited timing of injection into the embryonic stage in oviparous aphids, a protein delivery system from the hemolymph to the germline and embryos would be a useful tool for genome editing. This study reports a newly developed direct protein delivery system for aphids using cell-penetrating peptides (CPPs). CPPs are

The effects of light exposure during incubation on embryonic development and hatchling traits in lizards.

Light is an environmental factor that is known to profoundly affect embryonic development in some oviparous vertebrates, but such effects are unstudied in reptiles. We investigated the light sensitivity of lizard embryos by examining the thickness and light transmittance of eggshells as well as the effect of light on embryonic development and hatchling traits in four lizard species, the Chinese skink (Plestiodon chinensis), the northern grass lizard (Takydromus septentrionalis), the oriental leaf-toed gecko (Hemidactylus bowringii) and the Japanese gecko (Gekko japonicus). The eggshells were t

Characterisation of two vitellogenins in the salmon louse Lepeophtheirus salmonis: molecular, functional and evolutional analysis.

The salmon louse Lepeophtheirus salmonis Krøyer affects a variety of wild salmonoid hosts, but is also an important pest in aquaculture, which is a globally important and rapidly growing industry. Salmon lice have large reproductive outputs, and knowledge of reproductive processes may be crucial for the control of this parasite. Here, we report on the characterisation of 2 vitellogenins (LsVit1 and LsVit2), which are the precursors of salmon-louse egg-yolk glycoprotein. The structure of LsVit1 and LsVit2 was examined and compared to that in other oviparous animals. Phylogenetic analysis of LsV

Chondrogenesis and homology of the visceral skeleton in the little skate, Leucoraja erinacea (Chondrichthyes: Batoidea).

Chondrichthyan fishes possess visceral skeletons that differ considerably, morphologically, from those of their sister taxon, the osteichthyans. Here, we use histological techniques and whole-mount skeletal preparations to visualize and describe the sequence of visceral skeletal condensation and chondrogenesis in a chondrichthyan, the little skate (Leucoraja erinacea). We demonstrate that visceral skeletal condensation begins rostrally, with the mandibular arch, and progresses caudally with the hyoid arch and posterior branchial arches condensing soon after. We provide a detailed account of th

SLC7 amino acid transporters of the yellow fever mosquito Aedes aegypti and their role in fat body TOR signaling and reproduction.

BACKGROUND: An important function of the fat body in adult female mosquitoes is the conversion of blood meal derived amino acids (AA) into massive amounts of yolk protein precursors. A highly efficient transport mechanism for AAs across the plasma membrane of the fat body trophocytes is essential in order to deliver building blocks for the rapid synthesis of large amounts of these proteins. This mechanism consists in part of AA transporter proteins from the solute carrier family. These transporters have dual function; they function as transporters and participate in the nutrient signal transdu

Placenta: an old organ with new functions.

The transition from oviparity to viviparity and the establishment of feto-maternal communications introduced the placenta as the major anatomical site to provide nutrients, gases, and hormones to the developing fetus. The placenta has endocrine functions, orchestrates maternal adaptations to pregnancy at different periods of pregnancy, and acts as a selective barrier to minimize exposure of developing fetus to xenobiotics, pathogens, and parasites. Despite the fact that this ancient organ is central for establishment of a normal pregnancy in eutherians, the placenta remains one of the least st

Wash-resistance and field evaluation of alphacypermethrin treated long-lasting insecticidal net (Interceptor) against malaria vectors Anopheles culicifacies and Anopheles fluviatilis in a tribal area of Orissa, India.

A field trial was conducted on the efficacy of Interceptor nets-a long-lasting insecticidal net (LLN) factory treated with alphacypermethrin 0.667% (w/w) corresponding to 200mg/m(2), against malaria vectors Anopheles culicifacies and Anopheles fluviatilis in one of the highly endemic areas of Orissa. The study area comprised 19 villages which were randomized into three clusters and designated as Interceptor net cluster, untreated net cluster, and no net cluster. Baseline studies showed that both the vector species An. culicifacies and An. fluviatilis were 100% susceptible to alphacypermethrin.

Loss of vitellogenin receptor function results in yolk depletion, virome expansion, and reduced bacterial load within the oocytes of Rhodnius prolixus.

BACKGROUND: The vitellogenin receptor (VgR) mediates yolk protein uptake during follicle development and is essential for embryogenesis in oviparous species. Here, we characterize the single Rhodnius prolixus VgR isoform and uncover an unexpected role in microbial regulation within the reproductive system. RESULTS: The receptor displays a conserved LDLR-like structure and is highly expressed in early oocytes. RNAi-mediated VgR silencing caused defective yolk granule biogenesis, leading to the accumulation of the main yolk protein precursors, Vg and RHBP, in the hemolymph, yet oviposition and

Comparative Genomics Analysis Provides Insights into Pregnancy Maintenance Mechanisms in the Ovoviviparous Teleost Black Rockfish (Sebastes schlegelii).

The black rockfish (Sebastes schlegelii), an economically important ovoviviparous teleost in Chinese aquaculture, exhibits a distinctive reproductive strategy characterized by internal fertilization and prolonged embryonic development within females until live birth. However, this reproductive mode poses substantial challenges in artificial breeding practices due to a poor understanding of pregnancy (hereafter referring to intraovarian gestation in S. schlegelii) maintenance mechanisms. Here, we conducted a comparative genomic analysis between S. schlegelii and representative oviparous and ovo

Yolk proteins of the schistosomiasis vector snail Biomphalaria glabrata revealed by multi-omics analysis.

Vitellogenesis is the most important process in animal reproduction, in which yolk proteins play a vital role. Among multiple yolk protein precursors, vitellogenin (Vtg) is a well-known major yolk protein (MYP) in most oviparous animals. However, the nature of MYP in the freshwater gastropod snail Biomphalaria glabrata remains elusive. In the current study, we applied bioinformatics, tissue-specific transcriptomics, ovotestis-targeted proteomics, and phylogenetics to investigate the large lipid transfer protein (LLTP) superfamily and ferritin-like family in B. glabrata. Four members of LLTP su

Estrogen-dependent, extrahepatic synthesis of vitellogenin in male vertebrates: A mini-review.

In the last years, the hormonal balance is threatened by the interferences of substances with hormone-like action (endocrine disruptor chemicals, EDCs) that may harm animal reproduction. Most EDCs are resistant to environmental degradation and are considered ubiquitous contaminants. EDCs may have synthetic or natural origins. Pesticides used in intensive agriculture contain large amounts of chemicals with estrogenic properties, such as the alkylphenol nonylphenol (NP). Besides, animal feeding operations are important sources of natural estrogen metabolites introduced into the environment throu

A useful model to study the effect of high sugar concentrations upon growth and enzymic activities of toad embryos and larvae.

The aim of this study was to develop an oviparous model suitable for studying the differential effects and mechanisms by which a high concentration of extracellular glucose and other sugars produce diabetes complications, particularly body growth retardation during development. Hence, we studied the experimental conditions necessary to obtain measurable effects of high sugar concentrations (5-mM glucose, mannitol, fructose and galactose) upon body growth and development of Bufo arenarum embryos and larvae, and upon the activity of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), gamma-glutamyltransferase (GG

[Helminth diagnosis in pathologic anatomy].

Most publications devoted to diagnosis of helminths emphasize characteristic parasitological features. Histological feature are seldom described in detail. The purpose of this study was to propose a diagnostic method suitable for use by histologists who, unlike parasitologists, do not visualize the whole worm but rather pieces randomly scattered over a slide. It is relatively easy to distinguish helminths which have smooth muscle, no respiratory or circulatory system, and no coelom from arthropods which have striated muscle, both respiratory and circulatory systems, and coelom. At the adult st

The development and replacement of teeth in viviparous caecilians.

Tooth development and replacement in fetal and adult viviparous caecilians (Amphibia: Gymnophiona) are described and analyzed according to current theories of tooth succession. The fetal dentition differs from that of the adult in morphology, position, and function. Teeth are used by fetuses to scrape the oviducal epithelium, thus stimulating the secretion of a nutrient substance. Fetal dentitions vary in morphology and position in different species. The ontogeny of teeth of several species is described and the patterns of addition of loci and of replacement are analyzed. Loci are added both p
