Sex cord-stromal (granulosa cell) tumor in an ovotestis from a cow.

Development of gonadal tumors within an ovotestis is rare in mammals and this disturbance was not reported in cows. We report herein a gonadal stromal (granulosa cell) tumor in an ovotestis of a 15-month-old heifer from which the reproductive tract was obtained from a local slaughterhouse. Histopathological evaluation revealed that the gonads were ovotestis, but also a coincidental sex cordstromal (granulosa cell) tumor. The sex chromosome type was determined to be XX, suggesting an XX ovotesticular disorder of sexual development with uterus and a female phenotype. Key clinical message: Disord

Ovotesticular Disorder of Sexual Development and Non-Palpable Testis.

Disorders of sexual development (DSD) refers to a group of diseases that links the mismatch between an individual's genetic and gonadal development and its phenotype. Ovotesticular DSD (true hermaphroditism) is one such disease, in which both male and female gonads are present. A 15-year-old boy with a history of surgery for non-palpable testis was examined due to bilateral gynecomastia and known gonosomal mosaic of Klinefelter syndrome. The external genital was matured as male and, in the left half of the scrotum, there was a testicle of normal size. Despite uncertain resistance on the right

A rare case of lateral ovotesticular disorder with Klinefelter syndrome mosaicism 46, XX/47, XXY: An unusual presentation.

Ovotesticular disorder of sex development (OT-DSD) is a rare disorder of sexual differentiation characterized by the presence of both ovarian and testicular tissues in the same individual. It's incidence ranges from 3% to 10% of all disorder of DSD's, and the most common presentation is 46, XX followed by 46, XX/46, XY mosaicism and 46, XY. Klinefelter syndrome (KS) mosaicism 46, XX/47, XXY is extremely rare, and its association with the ovotesticular disorder is even rarer. We report an unusual case of 16-year-old with male habitus who presented with complains of cyclic hematuria. On examinat

[Clinicopathological characterization of true hermaphroditism complicated with seminoma and review of the literature].

OBJECTIVE: To study the clinicopathological characteristics and diagnosis of true hermaphroditism complicated with seminoma. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the clinicopathological data of a case of true hermaphroditism complicated with seminoma and reviewed the related literature. RESULTS: The patient was a 42-year-old male, admitted for bilateral lower back pain and discomfort. CT showed a huge mass in the lower middle abdomen. Gross pathological examination revealed a mass of uterine tissue, 7 cm x 2 cm x 6 cm in size, with bilateral oviducts and ovarian tissue. There was a cryptorch

Spontaneous ovulation in a true hermaphrodite with normal male phenotype and a rare 46,XX/47,XXY Klinefelter's mosaic karyotype.

BACKGROUND: Most true hermaphrodite patients--characterized by the presence of both ovarian and testicular tissue--demonstrate ambiguous genitalia and are diagnosed at birth, most commonly bearing a 46,XX karyotype. PATIENT AND METHODS: We report on a 13-year-old boy presenting with left scrotal hemorrhage. He had a left inguinal hernia, a palpable testis in the right, normal male external genitalia and significant gynecomastia. During operation, the left gonad and adjacent tissue were removed for histological examination, which revealed the presence of a normal ovary, rich in follicles and a

True hermaphroditism in six female littermates after administration of synthetic androgens to a pregnant bitch.

A pregnant bitch was treated with a synthetic testosterone mixture on approximately day 40. The female offspring (six pups) showed an increased anogenital distance, vaginal enlargement and a variable amount of vaginal discharge. The urinary orifice was found dorsally in the vestibulum, stooled on a protruding phallus-like structure. All six pups underwent a laparotomy and subsequent spaying and a modified ventral episioplasty technique to lift up the labia to a more vertical position in order to prevent urine accumulation. Histopathological examination of the genital tracts demonstrated the pr

[New definitions and classifications of the intersexual states: in which the Chicago Consensus has contributed to the state of the art?].

Disorders of sex development have posed a tremendous challenge not only in the diagnosis but also in the treatment, placing the patient, the family members, and the health team in the difficult task of attributing the best sex of rearing for that specific patient. A confusing and stigmatizing nomenclature has been employed and the Chicago Consensus tried to minimize the discomfort with modifications of the current terminology. The authors perform a critical analysis of the Consensus, raising the question that the new terminology does not solve the problems and persist being stigmatizing to the

Duplication of SOX9 is not a common cause of 46,XX testicular or 46,XX ovotesticular DSD.

BACKGROUND: Translocation of the SRY gene to the paternal X chromosome is the explanation for testis development in the majority of subjects with 46,XX testicular disorder of sexual development (DSD). However, nearly all subjects with 46,XX ovotesticular DSD and up to one third of subjects with 46,XX testicular DSD lack SRY. SRY-independent expression of SOX9 has been implicated in the etiology of testis development in some individuals. METHODS: We amplified microsatellite markers in the region of SOX9 from a cohort of 30 subjects with either 46,XX testicular or 46,XX ovotesticular DSD to det

Sex Reversal Syndrome (SRS): A Case of SRY-Positive 46,XX Testicular Disorder.

We report a case of an SRY-positive 46,XX Indian male who presented with small testis and phallus, poor beard and mustache development and gynecomastia at the age of 24 years. He was biochemically found to have hypergonadotropic hypogonadism. He had 46,XX karyotype and Quantitative Fluorescence-PCR (QF-PCR) identified the SRY gene on the X chromosome. SRY-positive 46 XX male SRS cases usually present as phenotypically male since birth but develop features of hypogonadism, poor testicular development, and infertility after puberty. Infertility, hypogonadism, external genital development, and ps

Ascidian follicle cells: Multifunctional adjuncts to maturation and development.

Ascidians are primitive chordates, subphylum Tunicata, that are sessile filter-feeding hermaphrodites as adults. Released oocytes are enclosed within a monolayer of follicle cells, a non-cellular vitelline coat and a monolayer of test cells that cover the egg membrane. Follicle cell structure is distinctive in different groups. They originate from circulating hemoblasts with functional nuclei. They are necessary for germinal vesicle breakdown in several species and may secrete a meiosis-inducing substance to the oocyte. In some families the follicle cells are necessary for fertilization. The gonads of 111 South African patients with ovotesticular disorder of sex differentiation.

PURPOSE: The aims of this study were to describe the gonadal tissue found in the Southern African true hermaphrodite and establish if there was a correlation between the clinical and histopathologic findings and if these findings were similar to patients with this condition elsewhere. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, South Africa, looked at all patients diagnosed with true hermaphroditism seen between 1984 and 2006. For this 23-year period, 111 consecutive true hermaphrodite patients were diagnosed on clinical findings, internal genital

Genital anomalies in Klinefelter's syndrome.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Klinefelter's syndrome is characterized by progressive testicular failure causing aspermatogenesis and androgen deficiency. Klinefelter patients classically have complete male sex differentiation, and genital anomalies are generally not recognized as associated features of the syndrome. METHODS: We reviewed the cases of Klinefelter's syndrome with genitalia abnormalities from the Cambridge Disorders of Sex Development Database, and also reviewed previous case reports of genital anomalies associated with Klinefelter's syndrome and its variants. RESULTS: We present seven Kline

True hermaphroditism: clinical profile and management of six patients from North India.

True hermaphroditism (TH) is an uncommon cause of genital ambiguity. This is a retrospective compilation of six cases of true hermaphroditism seen at our institute over the last one and a half decades. Clinical presentation was wide-ranging, with age at presentation varying from 2 months to 41 years and symptoms ranging from ambiguous genitalia to a lower abdominal mass. All patients had perineoscrotal hypospadias with varying degrees of labioscrotal fusion. Clinically, gonads were not palpable in four cases and internally an ovotestis was observed in half of them. Karyotyping was 46, XX in al

A model to study human ovotesticular syndrome.

Ovotesticular syndrome is a rare disorder of sex development characterized by the presence of testicular and ovarian tissue. The histologic characteristics of human testicular tissue are well defined by the presence of seminiferous cords or tubules containing TSPY-positive germ cells and Sox9-positive Sertoli cells surrounded by interstitial tissue containing cytochrome P450-positive Leydig cells and smooth muscle α-actin-positive peritubular myoid cells. The histological characteristics of the ovary can be defined by germ cell nests and the development of follicles. In contrast to the testis,
