Serum transaminase levels (serum glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase or serum glutamic-pyruvic transaminase) were found to be altered in 40 (21.39%) of 187 patients with oral lichen planus. Serum levels of isocitrate dehydrogenase was determined in 12 Reye's syndrome patients and the enzyme levels were compared with serum ornithine carbamyl phosphate, glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (aspartate aminotransferase), ammonia, and the stages of the disorder. Isocitrate dehydrogenase was elevated in 8 of the 12 patients and there was no direct correlation between elevated serum isocitrate dehydrogenase level and other clinical parameters.

Serum enzyme assays have been carried out in 66 patients suffering from diseases of the thyroid gland. Sixty per cent. of the hypothyroid patients had increased levels of aldolase and glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase, and 90% had high activities of creatine kinase. The significance of these findings, especially with regard to creatine kinase, is discussed.

PURPOSE: Glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT), also known as aspartate aminotransferase, catalyzes the reversible transamination of oxaloacetate and glutamate to aspartate and α-ketoglutarate. Two isoforms, cytosolic (GOT1) and mitochondrial (GOT2), are integral to the malate-aspartate shuttle, a key regulator of intracellular redox homeostasis. Four heroin-overdosed patients presented with coma, elevated serum enzymes (creatine phosphokinase (CPK) and serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (SGOT), and increased levels of plasma free hemoglobin. In two patients marked myoglobinuria was also detected. The plasma free hemoglobin returned to normal levels by the 3rd hospital day. Since coma may eventuate in compression of muscles, we suggest that the disruption of erythrocytes occurs as they traverse these ischemic areas.

A previously healthy 44-year-old man with well-documented normotension had a sudden onset of left flank pain and delayed onset of constitutional symptoms, hematuria, and elevations of lactic dehydrogenase, serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase, serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase, and creatinine levels. Angiography revealed unilateral renal artery fibromuscular dysplasia with dissection and infarction. In the year since, he has remained well and normotensive without therapy. Urinalysis was carried out in 231 inpatients with alcohol dependence syndrome (215 males and 16 females). Fifty-nine patients (25.5%) showed proteinuria, 97 (42.0%) showed glucosuria, and 62 patients (26.8%) showed hematuria on admission. Twenty-one patients with serious gram-negative infections were treated with aztreonam. Twenty of these were clinical and microbiologic cures; there was one clinical improvement with microbiologic persistence. No bacteria became resistant.
