Brachycephalic airway syndrome (BAS) is characterized by increased upper airway resistance due to conformational abnormalities occurring in brachycephalic dogs (BD). The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between aspiration and oxygen desaturation and to assess the efficacy of using pulse oximetry monitoring as a clinical tool to predict or detect aspiration. The 204 subjects were divided into four groups: 63 control subjects, 110 dysphagics, 9 dysphagics with a cuffed tracheostomy tube and 22 laryngectomized subjects. Arterial oxygen saturation (SpO2) was continuously measured throughout fluorographic examination until an adequate post-examination period afterward. Two cases of pneumothorax occurring during thoracotomy under one-lung ventilation are reported. One case occurred before pneumonectomy was carried out. The decrease in Spo2 shown by pulse oximetry, together with the increase in airway pressures, rapidly led to the diagnosis of pneumothorax. Oxygen saturation determined by pulse oximetry was monitored in 152 pediatric surgical patients divided into two groups. In one group, the oximeter data and alarms were available (N = 76) to the anesthesia team, and, in the other group, these data were unavailable (N = 76). BACKGROUND: Health outcomes are improved when newborn babies with critical congenital heart defects (CCHDs) are detected before acute cardiovascular collapse. The main screening tests used to identify these babies include prenatal ultrasonography and postnatal clinical examination; however, even though both of these methods are available, a significant proportion of babies are still missed. Routine pulse oximetry has been reported as an additional screening test that can potentially improve detection of CCHD.

The objectives of the study were to assess the ability of a fetal pulse oximeter to measure the fetal oxygen saturation (SPO2) continuously during labor and to assess the correlation between readings of fetal pulse oximetry and cord blood gases at birth. We report a case of a 15-yr-old North American Indian female with haemoglobin Hammersmith, scheduled for elective tonsillectomy, whose arterial oxygen saturation could not be reliably monitored perioperatively because of technical limitations of conventional dual wavelength pulse oximetry. Hypoxemia is recognized as a major complication of sedating pediatric dental patients. Traditional methods of patient monitoring show changes only with moderate to severe hypoxemia. This study compared pulse oximetry, a new monitoring technology, to traditional techniques in their ability to detect hypoxemia in sedated children. The results demonstrated that pulse oximetry is a more sensitive monitor of mild to moderate hypoxemia than measurements of heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate, or visual observation for cyanosis in sedated pediatric dental patients.
