Mass-independent isotope effect in the earliest processed solids in the solar system: a possible chemical mechanism.

A major constraint is described for a possible chemical origin for the "mass-independent" oxygen isotope phenomenon in calcium-aluminum rich inclusions (CAIs) in meteorites at high temperatures ( approximately 1500-2000 K). A symmetry-based dynamical eta effect is postulated for O atom-monoxide recombination on the surface of growing CAIs. It is the surface analog of the volume-based eta effect occurring in a similar phenomenon for ozone in the gas phase [Y. Q. Gao, W. C. Chen, and R. A. Marcus, J. Chem. Phys. 117, 1536 (2002), and references cited therein]: In the growth of CAI grains an equi

Isotopic tracing of the impact of mobility on infectious disease: The origin of people with treponematosis buried in hull, England, in the late medieval period.

Treponematosis has been one of the most studied and debated infectious diseases in paleopathology, particularly from the standpoint of its origin, evolution, and transmission. This study links evidence for treponematosis in skeletons from the 14th-16th century AD cemetery of the Augustinian friary of Hull Magistrates Court, England, with data from stable isotope analysis to test the hypothesis that the people with treponemal disease buried at this site were not locally born and raised. The objective is to explore the potential of using stable isotope data to track the place of origin and exten

Combining Denitrifying Bacteria and Laser Spectroscopy for Isotopic Analyses (δ(15)N, δ(18)O) of Dissolved Nitrate.

We present a novel approach for nitrogen (δ(15)N) and oxygen (δ(18)O) isotopic analysis of nitrate in water based on the isotopic analysis of N2O produced from the conversion of NO3(-) by cultured denitrifying bacteria and off-axis integrated cavity output spectroscopy (OA-ICOS). The headspace N2O was manually injected into an OA-ICOS isotopic N2O laser analyzer through a syringe septum port. Sample analysis time was ∼300 s. The use of OA-ICOS technology yields accurate and precise δ(15)N and δ(18)O results for dissolved nitrate samples when nonlinearity issues are considered. This new isotope

Interactive dynamics of particulate and dissolved organic matter under sustained hypoxia conditions in a semi-enclosed bay (Jinhae Bay).

We investigated the isotopic variation of particulate and dissolved organic matter (OM; δ13CPOC, δ15NPN, δ13CDOC) associated with the frequent occurrence of hypoxia in a semi-enclosed bay (Jinhae Bay, South Korea). During the hypoxic period (August-October 2024), surface-water physical properties (temperature: 25.8 ± 3.0 °C; salinity: 30.5 ± 1.9 psu; dissolved oxygen: 7.0 ± 2.0 mg/L) coincided with significantly elevated concentrations of particulate and dissolved organic components (POC: 0.5 ± 0.2 mg/L; PN: <0.1 mg/L; DOC: 1.3 ± 0.3 mg/L; DTN: 0.3 ± 0.1 mg/L) throughout the water column. Exploring the Potential of Electrospray-Orbitrap for Stable Isotope Analysis Using Nitrate as a Model.

Widely used isotope ratio mass spectrometers have limited capabilities to measure metabolites, drugs, or small polyatomic ions without the loss of structural isotopic information. A new approach has recently been introduced that uses electrospray ionization Orbitrap to measure multidimensional isotope signatures of intact polar compounds. Using nitrate as a model compound, this study aims to establish performance metrics for comparisons with conventional IRMS at the natural abundance level. We present a framework on how to convert isotopolog intensities to δ values that are commonly used in th

Soluble salt sources in medieval porous limestone sculptures: a multi-isotope (N, O, S) approach.

The sources and mechanisms of soluble salt uptake by porous limestone and the associated degradation patterns were investigated for the life-sized 15th century "entombment of Christ" sculpture group located in Pont-à-Mousson, France, using a multi-isotope approach on sulphates (δ(34)S and δ(18)O) and nitrates (δ(15)N and δ(18)O). The sculpture group, near the border of the Moselle River, is within the potential reach of capillary rise from the alluvial aquifer. Chemical analyses show a vertical zonation of soluble salts with a predominance of sulphates in the lower parts of the statues where c

Mechanistic studies of the flavoprotein tryptophan 2-monooxygenase. 1. Kinetic mechanism.

The flavoprotein tryptophan 2-monooxygenase catalyzes the oxidative decarboxylation of tryptophan to indole-3-acetamide, carbon dioxide, and water. The kinetic mechanism of the enzyme has been determined with tryptophan as substrate at pH 8.3. Initial velocity patterns, when both amino acid and oxygen concentrations are varied, are sequential with tryptophan and ping-pong with phenylalanine and methionine. Reduction by tryptophan in the absence of oxygen is biphasic. The rate of the rapid phase varies with the tryptophan concentration, with a limiting rate of 139 s-1 and an apparent Kd value o

Photosynthetic primary production in the Mesoproterozoic.

The Mesoproterozoic atmosphere had more CO2 and less O2 than at present. While the upper ocean was oxygenated, the deeper ocean was euxinic or ferruginous. Primary production was performed by Chlorobia, Cyanobacteria, Proteobacteria, and Archaeplastida. Cyanobacteria and Archaeplastida presumably performed oxygenic photosynthesis above the chemocline, while photosynthesis below the chemocline involved anoxygenic photolithotrophic oxidation of S2- or Fe2+ by Proteobacteria and S2- by Chlorobia and Cyanobacteria. Photolithotrophic growth of extant Proteobacteria with Rubisco, and Chlorobia with

Seasonal-to-interannual hydroclimatic variability in Afromontane environments during the late Early Pleistocene hominin occupations on the Southeastern Ethiopian Highlands.

Climate variability is a key factor influencing the distribution and adaptive response of mammalian species, including hominins. Here, we investigate seasonal and interannual hydroclimatic and environmental variability associated with the late Early Pleistocene hominin occupations on the Southeastern Ethiopian Highlands. We present stable carbon and oxygen isotope analyses of sequentially sampled tooth enamel from herbivores recovered from the archaeological contexts of Melka Wakena and Gadeb (2300-2400 m a.s.l.) and dated between 1.6 and ~ 1.0 Ma. Carbon isotope data indicate predominantly C4

Mesozoic atmospheric CO2 concentrations reconstructed from dinosaur tooth enamel.

Air-breathing vertebrates incorporate a fraction of isotopically anomalous air O2 in their body water. The 17O isotope anomaly of air O2 (expressed as Δ'17Oair) is related to atmospheric CO2 concentrations (pCO2) and gross primary production (GPP). Tooth enamel records the Δ'17O of body water and can thus preserve such paleo-pCO2 or paleo-GPP information over geological time periods. Here, we demonstrate the potential of respective reconstructions of atmospheric pCO2 or GPP from the triple oxygen isotope composition of fossil dinosaur tooth enamel. The data from unaltered enamel samples, along

Large sulfur-isotope anomaly in nonvolcanic sulfate aerosol and its implications for the Archean atmosphere.

Sulfur-isotopic anomalies have been used to trace the evolution of oxygen in the Precambrian atmosphere and to document past volcanic eruptions. High-precision sulfur quadruple isotope measurements of sulfate aerosols extracted from a snow pit at the South Pole (1984-2001) showed the highest S-isotopic anomalies (Δ(33)S = +1.66‰ and Δ(36)S = +2‰) in a nonvolcanic (1998-1999) period, similar in magnitude to Pinatubo and Agung, the largest volcanic eruptions of the 20th century. The highest isotopic anomaly may be produced from a combination of different stratospheric sources (sulfur dioxide and

Isotopic evidence for Last Glacial climatic impacts on Neanderthal gazelle hunting territories at Amud Cave, Israel.

The Middle Paleolithic site of Amud Cave, Israel, was occupied by Neanderthals at two different time periods, evidenced by two chronologically and stratigraphically distinct depositional sub-units (B4 and B2/B1) during MIS 4 and MIS 3, respectively. The composition of both hunted large fauna and naturally-deposited micromammalian taxa is stable at the site over time, despite a ∼ 10 ky gap between the two occupation phases. However, while gazelle is the most ubiquitous hunted species throughout the occupation, isotopic analysis showed that there is a marked change in Neanderthal hunting ranges

Open-source autosampler for elemental and isotopic analyses of solids.

Elemental and isotopic analyses are performed using elemental analyzers, and are widely employed for diverse scientific fields. An elemental analyzer is typically equipped with an autosampler. Here we present an open-source autosampler for elemental and isotopic analysis of solid samples. The autosampler consists of 1) a sampling table, on which a carousel pushes samples inside an orifice, and 2) a purging pipe, placed directly beneath the orifice, where the sample is purged off surrounding air, and then delivered to the reaction tube. The action of the purging pipe ensured that air contaminat

Hydrogeochemical and isotopic characterization of the upper and intermediate aquifers of the casamance (Senegal).

Groundwater serves as the primary supply source for socioeconomic activities in the Casamance region (south of Senegal), yet hydrogeochemical and water quality characteristics as well as flow patterns of groundwater at a regional scale are largely undocumented. This study aims to contribute to the understanding of hydrogeochemical processes of mineralization and to the hydraulic functioning of the Continental Terminal (CT) and Oligo-Miocene (OM) aquifer systems. Field campaigns were conducted in December 2021 (beginning of the dry season) and May 2024 (end of the dry season) to collect water s

Desulfurization of black powder for isotopic profiling using isotope ratio mass spectrometry.

The stable isotope analysis of black powder is of utmost significance with regard to its further comparison and traceability in explosion-related cases. To date, only a limited number of studies have reported the stable isotope analysis of black powder using isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS). However, because the sulfur content in black powder is high, sulfur deposition is extremely likely during the analysis process, thereby damaging the instrument and affecting the reproducibility of the results. Therefore, desulfurization of black powder samples prior to IRMS analysis is extremely desi

Conformational equilibrium isotope effects in glucose by (13)C NMR spectroscopy and computational studies.

Anomeric equilibrium isotope effects for dissolved sugars are required preludes to understanding isotope effects for these molecules bound to enzymes. This paper presents a full molecule study of the alpha- and beta-anomeric forms of D-glucopyranose in water using deuterium conformational equilibrium isotope effects (CEIE). Using 1D (13)C NMR, we have found deuterium isotope effects of 1.043 +/- 0.004, 1.027 +/- 0.005, 1.027 +/- 0.004, 1.001 +/- 0.003, 1.036 +/- 0.004, and 0.998 +/- 0.004 on the equilibrium constant, (H/D)K(beta/alpha), in [1-(2)H]-, [2-(2)H]-, [3-(2)H]-, [4-(2)H]-, [5-(2)H]-,

Mercury Isotope Fractionation during the Photochemical Reduction of Hg(II) Coordinated with Organic Ligands.

The photochemical reduction of Hg(II) is an important pathway in the environmental Hg cycle because it competes with Hg methylation and potentially limits the formation of bioaccumulative methylmercury. Hg stable isotope systematics have proven to be an effective tool for investigating the transport, transformation, and bioaccumulation of Hg. The dominant cause of mass independent isotope fractionation (MIF) of Hg in nature is the photochemical reduction of various species of Hg(II). However, it is difficult to fully interpret Hg stable isotope signatures due to the lack of mechanistic informa

Vibronic origin of sulfur mass-independent isotope effect in photoexcitation of SO2 and the implications to the early earth's atmosphere.

Signatures of mass-independent isotope fractionation (MIF) are found in the oxygen ((16)O,(17)O,(18)O) and sulfur ((32)S, (33)S, (34)S, (36)S) isotope systems and serve as important tracers of past and present atmospheric processes. These unique isotope signatures signify the breakdown of the traditional theory of isotope fractionation, but the physical chemistry of these isotope effects remains poorly understood. We report the production of large sulfur isotope MIF, with Δ(33)S up to 78‰ and Δ(36)S up to 110‰, from the broadband excitation of SO2 in the 250-350-nm absorption region. Acetylene

Building materials as intrinsic sources of sulphate: a hidden face of salt weathering of historical monuments investigated through multi-isotope tracing (B, O, S).

Sulphate neoformation is a major factor of degradation of stone monuments. Boron, sulphur and oxygen isotope signatures were investigated for five French historical monuments (Bourges, Chartres and Marseille cathedrals, Chenonceau castle, and Versailles garden statues) to investigate the role of intrinsic sulphate sources (gypsum plasters and mortars) in stone degradation, compared to the influence of extrinsic sources such as atmospheric pollution. Gypsum plasters and gypsum-containing mortars fall systematically in the δ(34)S and δ(18)O range of Paris Basin Eocene evaporites indicating the o

Denitrification and isotope fractionation effects under simulated aquifer conditions at a laboratory scale.

Denitrification plays a critical role in controlling the fate of nitrate (NO3-) in groundwater. The nitrogen isotope enrichment factor (εN) during denitrification is essential for quantifying the role of denitrification in nitrate reduction in groundwater. Experimental columns containing groundwater and sediment were established to simulate aquifer conditions. Denitrification rates and the N and O isotope fractionation effects of NO3- in both groundwater and sediment during dentrification were measured in experimental columns using four organic substances as electron donors (ethanol, acetate,
