Integrative identification of Contracaecum sp. (Nematoda: Anisakidae) from grey mullet Mugil cephalus and cormorant Phalacrocorax gaimardi in the Southeastern Pacific Ocean off Peru.

An integrative morphological and molecular approach was employed to characterize larval and adult stages of Contracaecum spp. (Nematoda: Anisakidae) parasitizing the flathead grey mullet Mugil cephalus and the red-legged cormorant Phalacrocorax gaimardi along the Peruvian coast. A total of 24 third-stage larvae (L3) were recovered from the kidneys of M. cephalus, while two adult male specimens and one additional larva were isolated from the gastrointestinal tract and ingested prey of P. gaimardi. Morphologically, all specimens shared key diagnostic features of the genus Contracaecum. Molecular

Shorter Migration Distance and Breeding Latitude Correlate With Earlier Egg-Laying Across the Northeastern Pacific Ocean Range of the Rhinoceros Auklet (Cerorhinca monocerata).

Models of migratory behavior predict trade-offs between fitness costs and benefits with respect to migration distance. Shorter migration distances may confer a fitness benefit by facilitating earlier breeding, however this is rarely investigated. We tested this hypothesis using a large-scale geolocation (GLS) dataset from 109 rhinoceros auklets (Cerorhinca monocerata), a differentially migrating seabird, that was tagged at 12 breeding colonies along the Pacific Coast of North America, spanning southern California to the eastern Aleutian Islands, Alaska. Using GLS-based position estimates, we d

Metazoan parasite communities of two deep-sea elasmobranchs: the southern lanternshark, Etmopterus granulosus, and the largenose catshark, Apristurus nasutus, in the Southeastern Pacific Ocean.

Two deep-sea shark species were obtained as by-catch of the local fishery of the Patagonian toothfish, Dissostichus eleginoides, at depths ranging from 1000 to 2200 m off central and northern Chile. A total of 19 parasite taxa were found in 133 specimens of the southern lanternshark, Etmopterus granulosus, (n = 120) and largenose catshark, Apristurus nasutus, (n = 13). Fourteen taxa (four Monogenea, one Digenea, four Cestoda, one Nematoda, two Copepoda, one Annelida and one Thecostraca) were found in E. granulosus, whereas five taxa (one Monogenea, two Cestoda and two Nematoda) were found in A

Daily accumulation rates of floating debris and attached biota on continental and oceanic island shores in the SE Pacific: testing predictions based on global models.

BACKGROUND: Long-distance rafting on anthropogenic marine debris (AMD) is thought to have a significant impact on global marine biogeography and the dispersal of non-indigenous species. Therefore, early identification of arrival sites of AMD and its epibionts is crucial for the prioritization of preventive measures. As accumulation patterns along global coastlines are largely unstudied, we tested if existing oceanographic models and knowledge about upstream sources of litter and epibionts can be used as a simple and cost-efficient approach for predicting probable arrival sites of AMD-rafting b

The genus Zelentia is an amphi-boreal taxon expanded to include three new species from the North Pacific and Atlantic oceans (Gastropoda: Nudibranchia: Trinchesiidae).

The taxonomy of Zelentia Korshunova, Martynov Picton, 2017, a genus of aeolidacean nudibranchs recently separated from Trinchesia Ihering, 1879, is reviewed. Using previous and novel data, including the defining morphological characters of a supplementary gland inserted into the penis, which is also armed with stylet, it is demonstrated that the genus Zelentia is a well-established amphi-boreal taxon. A phylogenetic tree and haplotype network for species of the genus Zelentia are provided. A new species from the Northeastern Pacific, Zelentia willowsi sp. nov. and a second Northeastern Pacific

Infections by Renibacterium salmoninarum and Nanophyetus salmincola Chapin are associated with reduced growth of juvenile Chinook salmon, Oncorhynchus tshawytscha (Walbaum), in the Northeast Pacific Ocean.

We examined 1454 juvenile Chinook salmon, Oncorhynchus tshawytscha (Walbaum), captured in nearshore waters off the coasts of Washington and Oregon (USA) from 1999 to 2004 for infection by Renibacterium salmoninarum, Nanophyetus salmincola Chapin and skin metacercariae. The prevalence and intensities for each of these infections were established for both yearling and subyearling Chinook salmon. Two metrics of salmon growth, weight residuals and plasma levels of insulin-like growth factor-1, were determined for salmon infected with these pathogens/parasites, both individually and in combination,

The problem of unavailability of drugs and shortages have been a common problem in recent years. Shortages may threaten some treatment regimens for oncological patients. This article presents a systematic review of studies evaluating the efficacy and safety of chemotherapy regimens combining fluorouracil and standard or low-dose leucovorin in treating colorectal cancer. A total of 13 prospective and retrospective studies were included in the review. Meta-analyses and review papers were excluded. It is apparent from the systematic review that a lower dose of leucovorin does not fundamentally af

Morphological and molecular characterization of three new species of Gyrodactylus (Monogenea: Gyrodactylidae) infecting Sicydium salvini (Teleostei: Gobiidae) in Mexican rivers draining into the Pacific Ocean.

The genus Gyrodactylus von Nordmann, 1832 is one of the most diverse within the class Monogenea; it contains mainly parasites of freshwater and marine teleost fishes. Around 40 species of Gyrodactylus have been described from gobiid fishes; mainly in Europe, as only two species are known from the Americas. In this study, we describe three new gyrodactylids from the body surface and fins of the goby Sicydium salvini (Gobiidae, Sycydiinae), which has a wide distribution on the Pacific coast, from Mexico to Panama. We describe Gyrodactylus oaxacae n. sp., G. atoyacensis n. sp. and G. salvini n. s

A Carbonic Anhydrase Serves as an Important Acid-Base Regulator in Pacific Oyster Crassostrea gigas Exposed to Elevated CO2: Implication for Physiological Responses of Mollusk to Ocean Acidification.

Carbonic anhydrases (CAs) have been demonstrated to play an important role in acid-base regulation in vertebrates. However, the classification and modulatory function of CAs in marine invertebrates, especially their responses to ocean acidification remain largely unknown. Here, a cytosolic α-CA (designated as CgCAII-1) was characterized from Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas and its molecular activities against CO2 exposure were investigated. CgCAII-1 possessed a conserved CA catalytic domain, with high similarity to invertebrate cytoplasmic or mitochondrial α-CAs. Recombinant CgCAII-1 could co

Sex-specific feeding ecology and microplastic ingestion in smooth hammerhead shark (Sphyrna zygaena) from the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean: insights from stable isotope and fatty acid signatures.

Microplastic pollution threatens marine life, especially apex predators like sharks that ingest these particles through their prey. The smooth hammerhead shark (Sphyrna zygaena), an endangered species, remains understudied in terms of microplastic exposure. This study examines whether sex-specific foraging ecology influences microplastic ingestion in S. zygaena from the eastern tropical Pacific. We characterized microplastics in the posterior part of the pylorus and used stable isotope and fatty acid analyses to compare dietary patterns between sexes. Results indicate that while the abundance

Hitching a ride across the continental divide of Mexico: the twospot livebearer Pseudoxiphophorus bimaculatus carried its Gyrodactylus spp. when translocated from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean versant.

We studied flatworm parasites of the genus Gyrodactylus associated with twospot livebearer Pseudoxiphophorus bimaculatus both in this host's native distribution in the Gulf of Mexico (Atlantic Ocean) versant, as well as in its invasive range across the continental divide, in the Pacific Ocean watershed. We surveyed 12 river basins, six on each slope of the continent, and recorded -apparently- overdispersed parasite distributions, both in terms of localities within basins and on fish hosts. Six gyrodactylid species were previously known to infect this poeciliid host, and we add five taxa to the

The diversity of microsporidia in parasitic copepods (Caligidae: Siphonostomatoida) in the Northeast Pacific Ocean with description of Facilispora margolisi n. g., n. sp. and a new Family Facilisporidae n. fam.

Three distinct microsporidia were identified from parasitic copepods in the northeast Pacific Ocean. Sequencing and phylogenetic analysis of a partial small subunit ribosomal RNA gene (SSU rDNA) sequence identified a genetically distinct variety of Desmozoon lepeophtherii from Lepeophtheirus salmonis on cultured Atlantic salmon Salmo salar, and this was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy. Phylogenetic analysis resolved the SSU rDNA sequence of the second organism in a unique lineage that was most similar to microsporidia from marine and brackish water crustaceans. The second occurre

Viral emergence in marine mammals in the North Pacific may be linked to Arctic sea ice reduction.

Climate change-driven alterations in Arctic environments can influence habitat availability, species distributions and interactions, and the breeding, foraging, and health of marine mammals. Phocine distemper virus (PDV), which has caused extensive mortality in Atlantic seals, was confirmed in sea otters in the North Pacific Ocean in 2004, raising the question of whether reductions in sea ice could increase contact between Arctic and sub-Arctic marine mammals and lead to viral transmission across the Arctic Ocean. Using data on PDV exposure and infection and animal movement in sympatric seal,
