Cordyceps is negative for its many biological activities and a tonic for restoring vital functions in traditional Chinese medicine. In an effort to evaluate the pharmacological effects, including the antiaging effect of the fruiting bodies of the cultivated Paecilomyces japonica fungus, a new type of Cordyceps sp. was investigated. This investigation was focused on ultimately revealing its biologically active principles, its effects on free-radical scavenging enzymes, lipid peroxidation, as well as its immunological functions. As a result, both water and methanol extracts were found to cause n

Cytospora chrysosperma is the primary pathogen responsible for walnut rot disease, affecting a wide variety of hosts. Currently, chemical agents, particularly agricultural Fungicides, are commonly utilized for the prevention and management of walnut rot. However, this practice has led to the development of drug-resistant pathogens, complicating disease control efforts. This study aimed to propose a safer and more efficient biocontrol strategy for combating walnut rot disease. The research focused on targeting C. chrysosperma, and through cross-confrontation methods, an antagonistic strain name

The level of activity of antioxidant protection enzymes (superoxide dismutase, catalase and peroxidase) under exposure to ionizing radiation and without it in strain Paecilomyces lilacinus, showing radioadaptive properties, and in control one has been investigated. It has been established that the researched strains are characterized by the high level activity of superoxide dismutase (200-800 AU/mg protein), extracellular and intracellular catalase (0.02-40 mmol min(-1) mg(-1) protein) and peroxidase (0.2-4 mmol min(-1) mg(-1) protein). Ionizing radiation was the inducer of significant changes

Melanin-containing fungi (black molds) have the capacity to thrive under extreme environmental conditions such as the elevated radiation levels inside the former Chernobyl reactors. These fungi have been hypothesized to grow toward and use gamma radiation as an energy source, but the literature does not clearly address which energies of the electromagnetic spectrum, if any, positively affect fungal growth. The goal of this work was to characterize the response of non-melanized and melanized fungi to two distinct electromagnetic wavelengths, i.e., ultraviolet (UV) and gamma ray, keeping absorpt

We describe the clinical outcomes of two contrasting cases of fungal keratitis due to Paecilomyces spp. The first case involving a 58-year-old woman was complicated by an initial laboratory misidentification as Penicillium and consequently a delay in treatment with an optimised antifungal regimen. The patient had a protracted clinical course that required a total of four penetrating keratoplasties. However, an accurate diagnosis was promptly made in the second case, a 46-year-old woman, which resulted in a satisfactory outcome after penetrating keratoplasty. Our principal aim was to highlight

BACKGROUND: Ancylostoma species have demanded attention due to their zoonotic potential. The use of anthelmintics is the usual method to prevent environmental contamination by Ancylostoma eggs and larvae. Nematophagous fungi have been widely used in their biological control due to the fungus ability to capture and digest free nematode forms.
AIMS: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of four different fungal extracts of Paecilomyces lilacinus (n=2), Trichoderma harzianum (n=1) and Trichoderma virens (n=1) isolates on the hatchability of Ancylostoma eggs.
METHODS: Fungal extracts

Hyalohyphomycosis is a rare infection caused by a group of fungi that are devoid of pigments in their cell walls. As one of the main pathogens of hyalohyphomycosis, Purpureocillium lilacinum (former Paecilomyces lilacinus) is known for its intrinsic resistance to various antifungal agents. Here, we report three cases that coincide with a history of farming and all of them suffered from cutaneous hyalohyphomycosis caused by P. lilacinum. They shared a clinical presentation consisting of erythematous-to-violaceous painful plaques with overlying pustules on one of their forearms. Hyphae and funga

The aim of this report was to describe a case of fungal endophthalmitis possibly caused by Paecilomyces lilacinus(PL) penetrating the sclera from a conjunctival abscess. This case study involved an 83-year-old male patient with a past history of scleral buckling, subtenon steroid injection, and cataract surgery. The vitreous opacity and a conjunctival abscess appeared in the inferonasal quadrant of his right eye at 5 months after cataract surgery. PL was isolated from a cultured conjunctival discharge specimen obtained from the patient's right eye. Although the treatment with antifungal agents

We report a case of a 41-year-old woman, wearer of contact lenses who was presented to the emergency room with a 2-month history of pain and red eye. She presented with a severe keratitis refractory to quinolones, fortified antibiotics and clotrimazole. Due to the risk of perforation, a tectonic penetrating keratoplasty (PK) was performed. Clinical signs of keratitis recurrence were observed and cultures were positive for Purpureocillium lilacinum (former Paecilomyces lilacinus) The patient did not improve on topical amphotericin B and intracameral voriconazole. Worsening of clinical condition

PURPOSE: To report a case of delayed fungal endophthalmitis by Paecilomyces variotii following uncomplicated cataract surgery. To our knowledge this is the first reported case of postoperative endophthalmitis by this species.
METHODS: We report the longterm clinical follow-up of an 83-year-old female who underwent uncomplicated sutureless, small-incision cataract surgery. She developed recurring uveitis 4 months after surgery. Vitreous tap and finally complete vitrectomy with removal of the capsular bag including the intraocular lens were performed. Fungi were studied by histopathology and cu

Functional feeds, as a prophylactic strategy, are a promising alternative to address stressful production-related activities (e.g., seawater transfer, delousing) and infectious diseases in salmon farming. To understand the effect of Paecilomyces variotii on short-term growth performance and health responses of vaccinated Atlantic salmon pre-smolts, a control diet (D1) and three experimental diets, where P. variotii replaced 5 % (D2), 10 % (D3) or 20 % (D4) of crude protein, were fed to fish for 28 days in freshwater. Fish fed diets containing P. variotii had a significant dose-dependent linear

A 28-year-old man undergoing treatment for hemophagocytic syndrome developed Paecilomyces lilacinus infection in skin ulcers on the face and in the tracheotomy stoma. While his bone marrow was suppressed by chemotherapy with dexamethasone, cyclosporin and etoposide for hemophagocytic syndrome, dental infection led to subacute necrotizing fasciitis caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa on the right side of the face, resulting in a large area of soft tissue defects. Etoposide was discontinued, and prophylactic treatment with itraconazole was initiated. The ulcers resulting from necrotizing fasciitis

Paecilomyces lilacinus infection is rare and is found worldwide. The majority of infections occur in immunocompromised people. Among immunocompetent patients, cutaneous infections are the second most common site of infection but are difficult to treat because of antifungal resistance. We report a case of hand cutaneous involvement with synovitis in an immunocompetent patient that improved after treatment with oral voriconazole. To the best of our knowledge, there are only five published cases of cutaneous P.lilacinus infection, all in immunocompromised patient, treated with oral voriconazole.

Experiments were carried out on animal species. The experiments used 30-day chicks, 80 rats, and 70 rabbits. Three hundred and twenty-nine patients with echinococcus complicated by paecilomycosis were meticulously examined. The fungi of the genus Paecilomyces undergo two transformation directions: the saprotrophic mycelial form of the fungus Paecilomyces variotii transforms to the tissue parasitic one as a globular form of spherules that transforms to the mycelial form in larval Echinococcus infection because the cyst capsule is a favorable environment for growth of fungal mycelia. The growth

Dendritic cells (DCs) classically promote immune responses but can be manipulated to induce antigen-specific hyporesponsiveness. It has been shown that phenotypically "immature" DCs, defined by low levels of costimulatory molecules at the cell surface, are involved in the induction of peripheral immune tolerance in autoimmunity. Paecilomyces hepiali Chen (PHC) mycelium, as a substitute for Cordyceps, has been used extensively as an immunomodulator to treat numerous diseases. In this study, the effects of an ethanol extract of PHC (EEPHC) on the phenotypic and functional maturation of bone marr
