Can orthographic rimes facilitate naming?

Although the orthographic rime (body) is thought to play an important role in reading English, previous priming experiments found little or no evidence for facilitatory body-priming effects in the naming task. That is, hose primes NOSE no better than does a completely unrelated prime. In the present study, the hypothesis that facilitatory body-priming effects are typically masked by strong inhibitory onset effects was investigated. It was shown that when the onset of a prime was removed, facilitatory body priming could be obtained with stimuli that previously had produced no evidence of facili

A reflection on plasticity research in writing dystonia.

Much attention has focused on the hypothesis that there is enhanced plasticity of sensorimotor circuits in patients with dystonia. A common experimental method to assess plasticity in dystonia research is paired associative stimulation (PAS). Excessive, nonfocal effects of PAS were observed in early studies of dystonia; however, these large effects have not been uniformly replicated. In this viewpoint, data from 15 patients with writing dystonia are presented. We suggest that, as in healthy individuals, the effects of PAS are highly variable. A review of previous studies examining PAS in writi

Randomized placebo-controlled study of lovastatin in children with neurofibromatosis type 1.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the efficacy of lovastatin on visuospatial learning and attention for treating cognitive and behavioral deficits in children with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1). METHODS: A multicenter, international, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was conducted between July 2009 and May 2014 as part of the NF Clinical Trials Consortium. Children with NF1 aged 8-15 years were screened for visuospatial learning or attention deficits (n = 272); 146 children demonstrated deficits at baseline and were randomly assigned to lovastatin (n = 74; 40 mg/d) or placebo (n = 70). Greater Neural Differentiation in the Ventral Visual Cortex Is Associated with Youthful Memory in Superaging.

Superagers are older adults who maintain youthful memory despite advanced age. Previous studies showed that superagers exhibit greater structural and intrinsic functional brain integrity, which contribute to their youthful memory. However, no studies, to date, have examined brain activity as superagers learn and remember novel information. Here, we analyzed functional magnetic resonance imaging data collected from 41 young and 40 older adults while they performed a paired associate visual recognition memory task. Superaging was defined as youthful performance on the long delay free recall of t

Orthographic similarity: the case of "reversed anagrams".

How orthographically similar are words such as paws and swap, flow and wolf, or live and evil? According to the letter position coding schemes used in models of visual word recognition, these reversed anagrams are considered to be less similar than words that share letters in the same absolute or relative positions (such as home and hose or plan and lane). Therefore, reversed anagrams should not produce the standard orthographic similarity effects found using substitution neighbors (e.g., home, hose). Simulations using the spatial coding model (Davis, Psychological Review 117, 713-758, 2010),

High-priority event instructions affect implicit and explicit memory tests.

Previous work has shown that instructing subjects to give special priority to one target event in a list enhances recall for that event, but impairs recall for the events immediately preceding it (Tulving, 1969). We examined the benefit of high-priority instructions, and the retrograde amnesia for previous items, in three experiments that included two explicit tests of memory (free recall and cued recall with word-stem cues) and an implicit test (word-stem completion). Experiments 1 and 2 revealed a beneficial effect of high-priority instructions on memory for the target events in both free re

Grapheme-phoneme correspondence in dyslexic and matched control readers.

Snowling (1980) reported that dyslexic children appear to have specific deficits in grapheme-phoneme conversion skills. Using a similar methodology, the present study compared the ability of dyslexic and control readers to make phoneme discriminations between the beginnings and ends of words. Recognition of word pairs as same or different were presented in four conditions: visual presentation-visual recognition (V-V), auditory-auditory (A-A), visual-auditory (V-A) and auditory-visual (A-V). It was found that dyslexic readers had particular difficulty with the mixed-mode conditions (V-A, A-V) w

Evaluating the task-specificity model of verbal memory: Regional volumetric analyses in temporal lobe epilepsy with hippocampal sclerosis.

OBJECTIVE: Verbal memory tasks differ in their cognitive demands and may rely on distinct left medial temporal structures. One model holds that verbal delayed recall is hippocampal dependent, whereas verbal paired associate learning relies on adjacent rhinal cortex. We test this by examining the relationship between task performance and regional temporal lobe volumes in individuals with temporal lobe epilepsy and hippocampal sclerosis (TLE-HS). METHODS: Retrospective analysis of 99 surgically naïve TLE patients (12 bilateral TLE-HS, 35 left TLE-HS, 28 right TLE-HS, and 24 MRI-negative left TL

Encoding of contextual fear memory in hippocampal-amygdala circuit.

In contextual fear conditioning, experimental subjects learn to associate a neutral context with an aversive stimulus and display fear responses to a context that predicts danger. Although the hippocampal-amygdala pathway has been implicated in the retrieval of contextual fear memory, the mechanism by which fear memory is encoded in this circuit has not been investigated. Here, we show that activity in the ventral CA1 (vCA1) hippocampal projections to the basal amygdala (BA), paired with aversive stimuli, contributes to encoding conditioned fear memory. Contextual fear conditioning induced sel

Associative hallucinations result from stimulating left ventromedial temporal cortex.

Visual recognition requires connecting perceptual information with contextual information and existing knowledge. The ventromedial temporal cortex (VTC), including the medial fusiform, has been linked with object recognition, paired associate learning, contextual processing, and episodic memory, suggesting that this area may be critical in connecting visual processing, context, knowledge and experience. However, evidence for the link between associative processing, episodic memory, and visual recognition in VTC is currently lacking. Using electrocorticography (ECoG) in a single human patient,

Estrogen and memory in a transsexual population.

The association between administered estrogen and performance on verbal memory and other cognitive tasks was examined. Male-to-female transsexuals undergoing estrogen treatment for sex reassignment (n = 29) scored higher on Paired Associate Learning (PAL) compared to a similar transsexual control group, awaiting estrogen treatment (n = 30) (P < 0.05). No differences between groups receiving and not receiving estrogen were detected on a control memory task (Digit Span) or on other cognitive tasks including Mental Rotations and Controlled Associations. There were no group differences in age. Gro

Prosopagnosia: a reclassification.

We report a quantitative investigation of three patients who presented with a profound prosopagnosia. They were tested on a series of tests of face perception, face recognition, and paired associate learning using faces. A patient with marked perceptual difficulties but no difficulty whatever in recognizing faces was tested as a control. The control patient's performance was as bad or worse on the tests of perception of faces, and it is concluded that impaired performance on tests of face perception does not contribute to difficulties in recognizing familiar faces. The major difference between

An exploratory within-cohort paired comparison study of learner-centered and traditional teaching in medical endocrinology education.

OBJECTIVE: This exploratory within-cohort paired comparison study aimed to compare the outcomes of a learner-centered learning (LCL) approach and Traditional Teaching (TT) in medical endocrinology education, using an unbalanced self-controlled design adapted to real-world teaching contexts. RESULTS: Sixteen undergraduates from the same cohort at Wenzhou Medical University were taught two endocrine topics (hyperuricemia and hyperthyroidism) by two associate chief physicians of equal qualification. Each topic was delivered using either LCL or TT. Although the LCL group achieved higher mean scor

Spatially aware deep learning reveals tumor heterogeneity patterns that encode distinct kidney cancer states.

Clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) is molecularly heterogeneous, immune infiltrated, and selectively sensitive to immune checkpoint inhibition (ICI). However, the joint tumor-immune states that mediate ICI response remain elusive. We develop spatially aware deep-learning models of tumor and immune features to learn representations of ccRCC tumors using diagnostic whole-slide images (WSIs) in untreated and treated contexts (n = 1,102 patients). We identify patterns of grade heterogeneity in WSIs not achievable through human pathologist analysis, and these graph-based "microheterogeneity" s

Polyphenols From Grape and Blueberry Improve Episodic Memory in Healthy Elderly with Lower Level of Memory Performance: A Bicentric Double-Blind, Randomized, Placebo-Controlled Clinical Study.

Polyphenols are promising nutritional bioactives exhibiting beneficial effect on age-related cognitive decline. This study evaluated the effect of a polyphenol-rich extract from grape and blueberry (PEGB) on memory of healthy elderly subjects (60-70 years-old). A bicentric, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was conducted with 215 volunteers receiving 600 mg/day of PEGB (containing 258 mg flavonoids) or a placebo for 6 months. The primary outcome was the CANTAB Paired Associate Learning (PAL), a visuospatial learning and episodic memory test. Secondary outcomes included verbal

Dose tolerance to lorazepam develop with once weekly dosing?

The effect of once weekly administration of lorazepam (2.5 mg) to benzodiazepine-naive student volunteers was assessed in a number of performance tests and on self-ratings. Tolerance developed to the effects of lorazepam on finger-tapping and on self-ratings of dizziness. No tolerance was observed to the drug-induced impairment in a nonsense-syllable paired associate learning test or to the effects on self-ratings of sedation or on heart rate. It is suggested that the reduced impairment in the digit-symbol substitution test observed in weeks 2 and 3 of lorazepam treatment was due to a 'masked'

Odor memory: taking stock.

This review discusses the state of knowledge in odor memory within the framework of mainstream memory research. Experimental findings are structured around prevailing theoretical distinctions in the study of memory proper, including semantic-episodic memory and implicit-explicit memory. Unaided odor-identification performance is found to be approximately 40%-50% of the total stimulus set presented to Ss, although performance approaches the limit of memorial discrimination if Ss are given label training with feedback. Odor identification is conceptualized as a task with 3 major components and w

Serial processing and the "phonetic route:" lessons learned in the functional reorganization of deep dyslexia.

A patient with chronic agrammatic Broca's aphasia presented with symptoms of deep dyslexia, in which it is presumed that phonologic processing of the written message is disrupted. Functional reorganization of the "nonlexical" or phonetic route of reading was undertaken according to principles of A. R. Luria, whereby the patient must learn consciously to control behaviors that had formerly been unconscious and automatic. This patient's responses in treatment made it clear that the phonetic route encompasses at least two dissociable functions, grapheme-phoneme conversion and sequential analysis.

Sight word reading in children with developmental disabilities: a comparison of paired associate and picture-to-text matching instruction.

Numerous instructional techniques have been used to teach sight word reading skills to individuals with developmental disabilities. The results of research incorporating paired associate instruction, in which familiar pictures are paired with unknown print stimuli, suggest that pictures "block" (i.e., interfere with) learners' ability to recognize novel text. On the other hand, there is some evidence that both stimulus fading and picture-to-text matching techniques can be used successfully to teach sight word recognition. The present study used an adapted alternating treatments design (Sindela

A developmental study of learning disabilities and memory.

Seven-, ten-, and thirteen-year-old learning-disabled (LD) and non-learning-disabled (NORM) children were presented specially structured lists of 38 words each and tested for free recall. Each list contained only four semantically related words. Two of the four related words were presented contiguously (serial positions 9 and 10) and the other two words were spaced (serial positions 20 and 30). All children recalled disproportionately more adjacent words (item 9 or 10) than any other words. Spaced words (items 20 and 30) were less likely to be recalled by the younger children than by the older
