A fresh cadaveric study of the paratubal muscles: implications for eustachian tube function in cleft palate.

The aims of this anatomic investigation were to examine the levator veli palatini, tensor veli palatini, and salpingopharyngeus muscles in relation to normal eustachian tube function and to analyze the clinical implications of these data for tubal physiology in cleft palate individuals. Detailed dissections under 3.2x loupe magnification were conducted on the paratubal muscles of 15 fresh human adult cadaveric head specimens, paying particular attention to their cranial base anatomy. Each half of the cadaveric heads was examined separately, giving a sample size of 30. The cranial base origin o

Respiratory-related activity of soft palate muscles: augmentation by negative upper airway pressure.

We studied respiratory-related activity of the soft palate muscles in 10 anesthetized tracheostomized supine dogs. Moving time average (MTA) electromyographic (EMG) activity was measured in the palatinus (PAL), levator veli palatini (LP), and tensor veli palatini (TP) with bipolar fine-wire electrodes and in the diaphragm with bipolar hook electrodes. Measurements were made during tracheostomy breathing and nasal breathing with the mouth sealed (NB). During tracheostomy breathing, all soft palate muscles displayed respiratory-related phasic inspiratory and expiratory as well as tonic EMG activ

Insertion of the tensor veli palatini muscle into the eustachian tube cartilage in cleft palate cases.

Differences in insertion of the tensor veli palatini muscle (TVPM) into the lateral lamina of the eustachian tube (ET) cartilage between cleft palate (CP) cases and controls were investigated histologically. Thirty temporal bones with entire ETs were studied: 10 from individuals with CP and 20 controls. The ratio of the length of the ET cartilage with insertion of the TVPM to its total length from the nasopharyngeal end to near the tubal isthmus was calculated in all 30 cases. In all 20 controls, but in only 6 of 10 CP cases, the TVPM inserted into the lateral lamina of the ET cartilage at its

Estimating Palatal and Pharyngeal Muscle Contraction in Hindi Syllable Pronunciation using Computational Modeling.

Introduction  Speech, one of the main functions affected by cleft palate, involves a complex orchestra of sound deformation by various organs including the larynx, pharynx, epiglottis, palate, tongue, lip, and other structures complementing them. Although the effects of palatoplasty are traditionally evaluated subjectively, objective parameters have seldom been described to compare the pre- and postrepair functions. The study tries to extract the palatal and pharyngeal muscles while uttering various Hindi syllables and tries to find the percentage contraction of these structures as an objectiv

Respiratory difficulty with palatal, laryngeal and respiratory muscle tremor in adult-onset Alexander's disease.

Sleep apnoea and respiratory difficulties are reported in adult-onset Alexander's disease (AOAD), an autosomal-dominant leukodystrophy that presents mainly with progressive ataxia. We demonstrate for the first time that the respiratory symptoms can result from association of palatal tremor with a similar tremor of laryngeal and respiratory muscles that interrupts normal inspiration and expiration.A 60-year-old woman presented with progressive ataxia, palatal tremor and breathlessness. MRI revealed medullary atrophy, bilateral T2 hyperintensities in the dentate nuclei and hypertrophic olivary d

Morphofunctional changes of orofacial muscles in patients with unilateral or bilateral cleft lip, alveolus and palate.

The facial musculature is part of a biocybernetic feedback system within the stomatognathic system, the continuity of which is disturbed by clefts of the lip, jaw, and palate (cheilognathopalatoschisis). This results in topographic, fine-structural and functional alterations of the facial musculature. In two heads with unilateral clefts and two heads with bilateral clefts, the facial musculature was dissected and the M. orbicularis oris macroscopically and topographically examined. We found changes in the attachment of the M. orbicularis oris. The modiolus, which is coresponsible for the prope

Nerve supply to the soft palate muscles with special reference to the distribution of the lesser palatine nerve.

OBJECTIVE: Descriptions of the innervation of the soft palate muscles in previous studies have varied according to the author. In the present study, distribution of the lesser palatine nerve, through which motor fibers of the facial nerve are considered to reach soft palate muscles, and that of the pharyngeal plexus in the soft palate were investigated in order to reexamine the innervation of the soft palate muscles according to anatomical evidence. RESULTS: Observations suggested that the levator veli palatini and palatopharyngeus were doubly innervated by branches of the lesser palatine ner

[Soft palate muscles electrostimulation in treatment of children at different stages of exudative otitis media].

We studied efficacy of electrical stimulation of soft palate muscles in 180 patients (292 ears) with various stages of exudative otitis media (EOM). The analysis of the results covered 172 patients. 8 patients withdraw because of the 4th (fibrous) stage of the process (n=4) and incomplete treatment course (n=4). Normalization of audibility thresholds and tympanometric parameters was observed after 10 sessions of electrostimulation in 129 (75.0%) patients with early EOM stages. The effect persisted for 1 year. 3 (1.7%) patients with EOM stage II and 40 (23.3%) patients with stage III failed the

Characterisation of human soft palate muscles with respect to fibre types, myosins and capillary supply.

Four human soft palate muscles, and palatopharyngeus, the uvula, the levator and tensor veli palatini were examined using enzyme-histochemical, immunohistochemical and biochemical methods and compared with human limb and facial muscles. Our results showed that each palate muscle had a distinct morphological identity and that they generally shared more similarities with facial than limb muscles. The palatopharyngeus and uvula muscles contained 2 of the highest proportions of type II fibres ever reported for human muscles. In contrast, the levator and tensor veli palatini muscles contained predo

Significance of levator muscle sling formation in cleft palate surgery: evaluation by electrical stimulation.

The effect of levator muscle sling formation in cleft palate surgery was evaluated by electrical stimulation of the muscle at surgery. Palatal movement before and after sling formation was recorded through a force transducer. After muscle sling formation, the soft palate was elevated more effectively toward the retropharynx and its mobility increased remarkably. The surgical procedure, which had been proposed on the basis of anatomic considerations, was proved to be effective for improving velopharyngeal function.

Limited Palatal Muscle Resection for the Treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Background and Objectives: Limited palatal muscle resection (PMR) is a surgical technique employed to alleviate respiratory disturbances in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) patients with retropalatal narrowing by reducing soft palate volume and tightening the muscles. Although some previous publications have demonstrated the effectiveness of limited PMR, the overall efficacy and therapeutic role of limited PMR for the treatment of OSA remain uncertain. This study utilized meta-analysis and a systematic literature review to estimate the overall effectiveness of limited PMR in treating OSA. Materia
