Although tumors of minor salivary glands are rare, the pleomorphic adenoma is the most common pathology among the benign neoplasm and can be found with high prevalence in the junction between hard palate and soft palate. The treatment of choice for most of maxillary tumors is surgical through either a total or partial maxillectomy. However, surgical defects caused by such type of treatment lead to both clinical and psychologic disorders for the patient. The immediate oral rehabilitation using interim palate obturator after maxillectomy provides optimization on the healing process, recovers the

Myoepitheliomas account for less than 1% of all salivary gland tumors and mostly occur in the parotid gland and palate. A 58-year old male patient reported to the Outpatient Department of PMS College of Dental Science and Research (Kerala, India) with a slow growing painless swelling on the palate for 4 years. Pleomorphic adenoma, basal cell adenoma, myoepithelioma, cyst adenoma, lipoma, neurofibroma, neurilemmoma and leiomyoma were considered. Histopathology revealed a thinly encapsulated tumor composed mainly of sheets of clear cells mixed with cells having eosinophilic cytoplasm. Histopatho

The clinical and radiographic features of two cases of pleomorphic adenoma are discussed. With the use of hypocycloidal tomography, definitive radiographic signs of benignity are demonstrated. They include (1) a radiolucent defect with well-defined cortical margins; (2) beveled margins which describe an intraoral origin of the neoplasm; (3) confinement of the neoplasm within the actual osseous defect, or within the projected circumferential diameter of the defect, if complete erosion has occurred; and (4) lack of periosteal reaction or osseous involvement of the hard palate adjacent to the rad

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma (EMC) is a very rare malignant neoplasm of the salivary glands. It mainly affects the major salivary glands. Little is known about the specificity of EMC in minor salivary glands (MSGs), which represents a diagnostic challenge.
METHODS: A systematic review was performed to identify clinical cases and case series of EMC in MSGs. The search was restricted to EMC of the palate to better characterize the diagnosis and management of this entity.
RESULTS: Of 509 initially identified articles, only 21 were included, involving 25 patients. The

Lymphoblastic lymphomas are neoplasms of immature or precursor lymphoid cells with no or limited bone marrow involvement, whose clinical presentation varies according to the immunophenotype. While mediastinal involvement is predominant in T-lymphoblastic lymphomas, B-lymphoblastic lymphomas frequently involve nodal sites. Extranodal presentation of B-lymphoblastic lymphomas is extremely rare. We present the case of a 49-year-old man with B-lymphoblastic lymphoma of the hard palate. The patient was treated with the R-Hyper CVAD regimen and is on maintenance chemotherapy. This is the first repor

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC) is the most common type of malignant neoplasm in the minor salivary gland. The hard palate is a frequently involved site of MEC. The treatment of low-grade MEC on the hard palate is wide local resection with a tumor-free margin. In the present case, the maxillary defect was reconstructed using a buccal fat pad (BFP) flap, followed by application of 4-hexylresorcinol (4HR) ointment for 2 weeks. The grafted BFP successfully covered the tumor resection defect without tension and demonstrated complete re-epithelialization without any complications.

Salivary gland tumors are known for its rarity and almost 30%-40% occur in the minor salivary glands, out of which, pleomorphic adenoma (PA) is rated to be the most common benign salivary gland neoplasm. This term was first termed by Willis and is called so, because of the ability of the cells of this tumor to differentiate into epithelial cells and mesenchymal cells, which gives it an unusual histologic pattern. Literature reports most PAs to be associated with parotid salivary glands and palatal salivary glands, the latter being the most common intraoral site of origin. Interestingly, no cas

Diffuse large B-cell lymphomas (DLBCLs) are defined as neoplasms of large transformed B cells, i.e. with nuclear diameter more than twice that of a normal lymphocyte. These account for 30-40% of all adult non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (NHL). Intraoral lymphomas are relatively rare and often difficult to diagnose in clinical settings. In this case report, we describe a case of primary DLBCL affecting the anterior part of the hard palate of an elderly male patient. DLBCL of anterior part of hard palate is yet to be reported in the English literature, even though DLBCL cases involving the posterior pal

INTRODUCTION: The chromosome 22q11.2 deletion syndrome comprises phenotypically similar diseases characterized by abnormal development of the third and fourth branchial arches, resulting in variable combinations of congenital heart defects, dysmorphisms, hypocalcemia, palatal dysfunction, developmental or neuropsychiatric disorders, and impairment of the immune system due to thymic dysfunction. Other genetic syndromes, often called DiGeorge-like, share clinical and immunological features with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome. This syndrome has been rarely associated with malignancies, mainly hematolo

We report a 71-year-old male patient with five separate primary metachronous squamous cell carcinomas of the head and neck (parotid, tongue, soft palate, larynx and hypopharynx) that occurred over a period of 8 years. The long survival of the patient after discovery of his first neoplasm (parotid) is the result of careful vigilance during the follow-up period and diligently planned therapies for each of his multiple primary tumors after radical surgery had been performed on his first neoplasm.

CASE SERIES SUMMARY: Feline maxillary sarcomas are aggressive spindle cell neoplasms that occur within the maxilla, palate and upper lip of cats. This diagnosis includes fibrosarcoma and sarcomas with indeterminate histomorphology, excluding melanocytic tumors and sarcomas that can be differentiated by histomorphology. In this study of feline maxillary sarcomas in 25 cats, the cats' ages ranged from 4 to 16 years (median 12.5). These sarcomas presented as smooth thickenings or mass lesions of the gingiva and palate, often involving both the right and left quadrants of the maxilla. Radiographic

Non-Hodgkin lymphomas (NHLs) in the head and neck region are malignant lymphoid neoplasms that usually originate from B-lymphocytic cell lines. Primary extranodal manifestations of this hematolymphoid tumor in the oral cavity are rare and involve the maxillary jaw including the palatal soft tissues, the mandible, and gingival tissues in patients between 60 and 70 years of age without sex predilection. This case report of an extra-nodal NHL in the palate of a 75-year-old patient emphasizes the importance of accurate clinical, radiographic, and histologic diagnostic procedures to avoid delayed d

Salivary gland tumours are an important part of the Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, unfortunately, only few studies on these tumours have been done in Latin-American population. The aim of this study was to compare demographic data on salivary gland tumours in a Mexican sample with those previously published from Latin American and non-Latin American countries. All cases of salivary gland tumours or lesions diagnosed in our service were reviewed. Of the reviewed cases,67 were confirmed as salivary gland tumours. Out of these 64.2% were benign neoplasms, 35.8% were malignant and a slight fema

The purpose of this cross-sectional study is to examine the relationship between surgical treatments for sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) and composite measure of surgical complications in a nationally representative sample of hospital discharges among U.S. adults. We performed secondary analyses of 33,679 hospital discharges from the 2002-2012 Nationwide Inpatient Sample that corresponded to U.S. adults (≥18 years) who were free of head-and-neck neoplasms, were diagnosed with SDB and had undergone at least one of seven procedures. Multivariate logistic regression models were constructed to es

We report the case of a primary malignant melanoma arising from the mucosa of the hard palate on a fibrovascular stalk. This is to our knowledge the first report of a pedunculated melanoma in this location. The possibility of a more favorable prognosis, because of the stalk, which shows no signs of invasion by the neoplasm, is considered.

INTRODUCTION: Minor salivary gland neoplasms of epithelial origin are rare in children and adolescents and most are not well documented, except for a few small series and case reports. This study represents a retrospective clinical analysis of nine cases of benign epithelial salivary gland neoplasms accessioned over a 35-year period at the Louisiana State University School of Dentistry and combines the data with well-documented cases from the English-language literature.
METHODS: A retrospective clinical analysis of nine cases of benign epithelial salivary gland neoplasms was performed over a

Fibrolipomas are benign mesenchymal neoplasms of the fatty tissue rarely encountered in the oral cavity. They account for around 1% to 5% of all neoplasms affecting the mouth and occur as raised, slow-growing, painless lesions of normal or yellow coloration and uncertain etiology. In contrast, mucus retention cysts are epithelium-lined cavities originated from a salivary gland. They are also raised, asymptomatic, slow-growing lesions, located on the floor of the mouth, buccal mucosa and lips. This article reports a diagnostic and a surgical treatment of a rare fibrolipoma case associated with

Spindle cell lipoma (SCL) is a benign lipomatous neoplasm typically located in the posterior neck and back of older males. It presents as a well-circumscribed mass in the buccal mucosa, tongue, floor of the mouth or hard palate. There are only two case reports of SCL in the gingiva and alveolar ridge. Here, we report a case of SCL in the mandibular mucogingival junction of a 68-year-old male. Clinical, histopathological and immunohistochemical findings are presented. Although oral SCL is rare, it should be considered in the differential diagnosis of spindle cell neoplasms occurring in the oral

Introduction Schwannomas are benign tumors originating from differentiated Schwann cells. Being the least common intraoral neoplasm of neural origin, it is rarely seen in the palate. The literature lacks an extensive review of intraoral schwannoma confined to the palate. Objective To review previously reported cases of palatal schwannoma along with an illustrative case, and to provide a better insight regarding clinicopathological and radiological features of this neural tumor in a rare intraoral site. Data Synthesis We present a case of palatal schwannoma in a 16-year-old female. An additi
