A Case Study of Anisakiasis in the Palatine Tonsils.

Anisakidosis is a nematode infection caused by the ingestion of larvae-infected raw or undercooked fish. Although gastric anisakiasis is a common disease in Japan due to the popularity of eating raw and undercooked fish, reports of anisakiasis in the tonsils are extremely rare. A 68-year-old man presenting with clinical features of peritonsillitis was admitted for examination. The right peritonsillar region exhibited slight edematous swelling and rash, and a white foreign body was observed. This foreign body was removed, and pathological examination revealed Anisakis.

Bilateral lymphangiomatous polyps of the palatine tonsils.

Lymphangiomatous polyps of the tonsils are rare with less than 30 cases reported in the literature. All have been unilateral. We report a case of a child with bilateral lymphangiomatous polyps of the palatine tonsils that was suspected on preoperative examination as opposed to an incidental postoperative histologic finding. These findings were also correlated with a further imaging study to establish this entity as a localized rather than a generalized histologic phenomenon.

Physiological FDG uptake in the palatine tonsils.

In clinical F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) studies of the head and neck region, remarkable symmetric tonsi … d and neck disease appear to reflect differences in activity of "physiological" inflammation of the palatine tonsils.

Histopathology of the palatine tonsil in the newborn infant.

We studied 13 tonsils from newborn infants in order to understand the evolution of the microscopical alterations in tonsils of children with recurrent infections. The weight of the newborns ranged from 0.540 to 3.250 kg. All tonsils had a similar histopathological pattern, independent of the weight of the newborn. The epithelium of the crypt showed no or slight infiltration of lymphocytes. All cases had some dilated crypts with formation of cysts lined by squamous epithelium and filled with squamous debris. The lymphoid tissue was poorly developed and with no differentiation into primary folli

Superoxide dismutases in human palatine tonsils.

In order to investigate the protective system of human palatine tonsils against the cytotoxic superoxide radicals (O(-)(2)) generated from the oxygen-related bactericidal system, immunohistochemistry and electron spin resonance (ESR) spectrometry were used to detect the distribution and activities of superoxide dismutases (SODs) in tonsils of different related systemic diseases. Immunohistochemistry showed that SODs distribute in extrafollicular lymphatic tissue and crypt epithelium. No distribution difference could be found between tonsils of different related systemic diseases. ESR revealed …

FEATURES OF THE CONNECTIVE TISSUE COMPONENT OF THE PALATINE TONSILS IN PATIENTS WITH RECURRENT TONSILLITIS.

OBJECTIVE: The aim: To explore the morphological changes of palatine tonsil at the levels of the epithelial layer and connective tissue; to determine the relative area of the connective tissue component in the tonsillar tissue (fibrosis) in patients with recurrent tonsillitis compared to the control. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Materials and methods: This study presents a morphological assessment of the palatine tonsils of 10 people. Tonsils' material with surrounding tissue was fixed in 10% formalin solution. The samples were dehydrated in increasing ethanol concentrations, cleared in xylol, impre…

[Morphological radioautographic study of the palatine tonsils in chronic tonsillitis and healthy subjects].

A pilot morphological (radioautographic) study of healthy and affected palatine tonsils (in hypertrophy and toxic-allergic form of chronic tonsillitis) in children and adults has shown that intensity of biosynthetic processes (protein-synthetic -- RNA synthesis and proliferative activity -- DNA synthesis) in the cells of palatine tonsils and structural changes of their tissues depend on characteristics of pathological process. Microbial penetration into the tonsils with formation of an active focus of chronic infection is traced.

[Morphofunctional characteristics of palatine tonsil tissue and lacuna contents in chronic tonsillitis].

Relationships between microbiological features and cell composition of lacunar content and morphofunctional status of the immunocompetent tissue of palatine tonsils were studied by histological, histochemical, morphometrical, microbiological, and cytological methods. Cytological and microbiological data on the lacuna content were found to reflect the reactive condition of the tonsils and should be regarded as a component of the morphofunctional characteristics of the palatine tonsils as a whole.
