Paleopathological changes in an early iron age horse skeleton from the Central Balkans (Serbia).

During a rescue archeological excavation in 2012 at the site of Ranutovac-Meanište near Vranje, southern Serbia, remains of an Early Iron Age (Hallstatt B-C) settlement were revealed. In one of the settlement pits a complete horse skeleton was discovered. The skeleton belongs to a mare, aged 4-5 years at death. In this paper, paleopathological changes in the horse skeleton are described and analyzed using macroscopic, radiographic and scanning electron microscopy techniques to interpret the possible use of the animal. Potential bitting damage is observed in the lower second premolars (P2) and

Hallux valgus in a historical French population: paleopathological study of 605 first metatarsal bones.

OBJECTIVES: To estimate the prevalence of hallux valgus in a historical population in France, to identify associated skeletal abnormalities, and to look for an influence of footwear changes through time. METHODS: We studied the 605 first metatarsals found in the necropolis of the Notre-Dame-du-Bourg cathedral in Digne in the Alpes-de-Hautes-Provence region of southern France. The necropolis contains remains from the 5th to the 17th century. RESULTS: Hallux valgus was identified only in individuals older than 30years at death, and its prevalence increased significantly with age. Exostosis at

Lepromatous leprosy in Bronze Age Oman: micro-CT provides tools for paleopathology in fragmentary and commingled assemblages.

Paleoradiology uses CT scanning, digital radiography, and 3D imaging to non-invasively characterize the lives and the experience of health and disease for past people. This paper presents an analysis of micro-CT scans of leprosy in three archaeological maxillae from Dahwa, Oman (2500-2000 BCE) to characterize the natural history of disease progression on an ultra-structural level and address environmental and social factors that shaped the experience of health in Arabia during the Bronze Age. The human skeletal remains from Bronze Age Oman present a challenge for paleopathological analysis bec

Ankylosis of wrist and small joints of the hand occurs in rheumatoid arthritis: Diagnostic implication in paleopathology.

There are no universally accepted criteria for the paleopathological diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Recent clinical studies show that small joint ankylosis occur in RA at a low frequency (2%). Presence of small joint ankylosis in paleopathological material does therefore not allow one to exclude a diagnosis of RA provided no other bone changes suggestive of spondyloarthropathy are present.

Otitis media and mastoiditis in temporal bones of prehistoric Chilean populations. A paleopathological and paleoepidemiological study.

BACKGROUND: This study evaluates otitis media in prehistoric populations in northern Chile. AIMS/OBJECTIVES: Determining prevalence of otitis media and diagnostic usefulness of temporal-bone X-rays in skulls. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 444 skulls belonging to three groups: prehistoric-coastal (400-1000 AD), prehistoric-highland (400-1000 AD) and Pisagua-Regional Developments (1000-1450 AD). Skulls were evaluated visually and with Schuller's view X-rays. Five skulls diagnosed as having had otitis media, five diagnosed as normal, and one with temporal bone fistula also had a computed tomography (C

Proximal tibial osteophytes and their relationship with the height of the tibial spines of the intercondylar eminence: paleopathological study.

OBJECTIVE: Tibial spiking (i.e., spurring of tibial spines), eburnation, and osteophytes are considered features of osteoarthritis. This investigation employed direct inspection of the medial and lateral tibial plateaus in paleopathological specimens to analyze the frequency and morphological features of osteoarthritis and to define any relationship between the size of osteophytes and that of the intercondylar tibial spines. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 35 tibial bone specimens were evaluated for the degree of osteoarthritis and presence of eburnation. Each plateau was also divided into

Paleopathological features of the cervical spine in the early middle ages: natural history of degenerative diseases.

OBJECTIVE: Trauma and degenerative joint disease are the most common pathological conditions observed in archaeological skeletal remains. We describe the prevalence of different types of cervical bone diseases observed in the early Middle Ages (6th to 8th centuries AD). METHODS: Human skeletons were excavated from Germanic row graves in southwestern Germany. One hundred ninety-six cervical spines thus obtained were examined for bone disease. The degenerative changes were classified into Grades 1 (marginal osteophytes), 2 (uneven joint surfaces), and 3 (osseous ankylosis). Cervical spinal cana

Enlargement of the third intercondylar tubercle of Parsons as a sign of osteoarthritis of the knee: a paleopathologic and radiographic study.

PURPOSE: To correlate presence and size of the third intercondylar tubercle of Parsons (TITP) with occurrence and severity of osteoarthritis of the knee. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In 100 paleopathologic tibial specimens and on 160 clinical knee radiographs, size of the TITP was correlated with osteoarthritis of medical and lateral femorotibial joints (FTJ) and with prominence of tibial spines. RESULTS: TITP size correlated significantly with osteoarthritis of the tibial plateau in the paleopathologic specimens (P<.0001). TITP size correlated significantly with osteoarthritis of medial FTJ and t

Aortic paleopathology: osteological evidence of an aortic aneurysm in historic human remains from Lithuania (17th18th centuries AD).

This report investigates a probable aortic aneurysm in a skeleton from Kedainiai, Lithuania, assessing cardiovascular signs within a sample of 22 adults. Notably, sternal bone changes indicative of chronic aneurysmal pressure were observed. The remains, identified as those of a middle-aged adult male (ca. 50 years old), exhibited an oval-shaped perforation and surrounding erosion and remodeling on the sternal body, consistent with chronic pressure exerted by a dilated ascending aorta. These findings were systematically compared with documented cases of aortic aneurysms from osteological specim

Health Is not always written in bone: using a modern comorbidity index to assess disease load in paleopathology.

Paleopathology has revealed much about disease in the past but is usually limited to conditions with osteological manifestations; this often excludes acute soft tissue infections and causes of death for most individuals in the past and present. Our understanding of the evolution of disease is essential for contextualizing and predicting the epidemiological shifts that are happening in modern society, as high rates of infectious disease coexist alongside high rates of chronic disease in rates unlike those observed previously in human history. Moreover, many physiological states not previously c

[Neurological paleopathology in the pre-Columbian cultures of the coast and the Andean plateau (I). Artificial cranial deformation].

AIMS: The aim of this work was to study the cranial trepanations and deformations carried out by the ancient Paraca, Huari, Tiahuanaco and Inca cultures. To do so, we conducted a field study involving visits to archaeological remains and anthropological museums on the Andean plateau and the Peruvian coast. DEVELOPMENT: Cranial deformation was more common in the Andean regions and was performed by putting little pieces of wood or compressive bandages on newborn infants' heads in order to modify the growth axis of the cranial cavity. Cranial deformations were performed for aesthetic and magic r

New information on paleopathologies in non-avian theropod dinosaurs: a case study on South American abelisaurids.

Studies on pathological fossil bones have allowed improving the knowledge of physiology and ecology, and consequently the life history of extinct organisms. Among extinct vertebrates, non-avian dinosaurs have drawn attention in terms of pathological evidence, since a wide array of fossilized lesions and diseases were noticed in these ancient organisms. Here, we evaluate the pathological conditions observed in individuals of different brachyrostran (Theropoda, Abelisauridae) taxa, including Aucasaurus garridoi, Elemgasem nubilus, and Quilmesaurus curriei. For this, we use multiple methodologica

Metagenomic and paleopathological analyses of a historic documented collection explore ancient dental calculus as a diagnostic tool.

Dental calculus is a microbial biofilm that contains biomolecules from oral commensals and pathogens, including those potentially related to cause of death (CoD). To assess the utility of calculus as a diagnostically informative substrate, in conjunction with paleopathological analysis, calculus samples from 39 individuals in the Smithsonian Institution's Robert J. Terry Collection with CoDs of either syphilis or tuberculosis were assessed via shotgun metagenomic sequencing for the presence of Treponema pallidum subsp. pallidum and Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC) DNA. Paleopathologic

Tuberculosis in post-contact Native Americans of Brazil: Paleopathological and paleogenetic evidence from the Tenetehara-Guajajara.

Tuberculosis (TB) has been described in Native American populations prior to the arrival of European explorers, and in Brazilian populations dating from the Colonial Period. There are no studies demonstrating TB infection in native Brazilians, and the history and epidemiological scenario of TB in Brazil is still unknown. The aim of this study was to verify the presence of TB infection among the native Tenetehara-Guajajara population from Maranhão State, Brazil, 210 ± 40 years ago. A Tenetehara-Guajajara skeleton collection was submitted to paleopathological analysis, and rib bone samples (n =

Three Skulls Dating from the French Revolutionary Years Diagnosed with Tinea Capitis: A Paleopathologic Approach.

The Musée Dupuytren was a Parisian pathology museum established in 1835. This museum hosted 3 skulls with severe craniofacial lesions initially tagged as aggressive forms of tinea capitis. The aim of this study was to investigate these specimens and discuss the initial diagnosis. Historical investigations were conducted based on the biographic data from the tags of the 3 skulls and entries on the catalog of the museum. Age was determined using dentition and the patency of cranial base synchondroses. The computed tomography scans were performed using standard medical devices. The 3 skulls were

Paleopathological evidence of paranasal lesions: Two cases of frontal sinus osteomata from Imperial Rome.

The archaeological excavations carried out in 1999 in the Collatina necropolis of the Roman Imperial Age (1st-3rd centuries AD) (Rome, Italy) discovered the skeletal remains of two adult males with evidence of paranasal lesions. Both individuals showed postmortem damage in the frontal bone, through which it was possible to macroscopically detect an oblong new bone formation. In both specimens, radiological examination of the defects' morphology showed new pediculated-based bone formations. Radiology also confirmed the presence of benign osseous masses arising from the right frontal sinus and i

Paleopathological Study of Dwarfism-Related Skeletal Dysplasia in a Late Joseon Dynasty (South Korean) Population.

Skeletal dysplasias related to genetic etiologies have rarely been reported for past populations. This report presents the skeletal characteristics of an individual with dwarfism-related skeletal dysplasia from South Korea. To assess abnormal deformities, morphological features, metric data, and computed tomography scans are analyzed. Differential diagnoses include achondroplasia or hypochondroplasia, chondrodysplasia, multiple epiphyseal dysplasia, thalassemia-related hemolytic anemia, and lysosomal storage disease. The diffused deformities in the upper-limb bones and several coarsened featur

Paleopathological Changes in Animal Bones from Croatian Archaeological Sites from Prehistory to New Modern Period.

A special part of archaeology, so-called archaeozoopathology or veterinary paleopathology is dedicated to studies of paleopathological changes in animal remains and contributes to the knowledge of ancient veterinary medicine and the history of diseases. In our study, we analyze paleopathological changes determined by gross observation and diagnostic imaging in the animal material originating from eight archaeological sites in Croatia. A standard archaeozoological analysis was carried out and specimens with visually detected macrostructural changes were radiographed. In total, 50 animal remains

Anterior ankle impingement and talar bony outgrowths: osteophyte or enthesophyte? Paleopathologic and cadaveric study with imaging correlation.

OBJECTIVE: Bony "spurs" are a major component of anterior ankle impingement syndrome. The two major accepted hypotheses on the origin of these bony spurs are osteophyte formation due to repetitive microtrauma and enthesophyte development because of recurrent capsular or ligamentous traction. The purpose of this study was to provide a detailed evaluation of the bony outgrowths that arise on the anterior aspect of the talus and correlate them with the sites of capsular attachment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-eight well-preserved talus bones from the San Diego Museum of Man were assessed regar
