Influenza viruses with pandemic potential have been detected in humans in the Eastern Mediterranean Region. The Pandemic Influenza Preparedness (PIP) Framework aims to improve the sharing of influenza viruses with pandemic potential and increase access of developing countries to vaccines and other life-saving products during a pandemic. Under the Framework, countries have been supported to enhance their capacities to detect, prepare for and respond to pandemic influenza. In the Eastern Mediterranean Region, seven countries are priority countries for Laboratory and Surveillance (L&S) support: A

The COVID-19 pandemic underscores the need to promote and protect well-being by strengthening prevention, preparedness and response to global health threats. It also demonstrated the need for coordinated national and international efforts, particularly to ensure equitable access to vaccines during public health crises. Malaysia has implemented robust pandemic preparedness measures, although its COVID-19 experience highlighted the need to improve access to life-saving vaccines and to take urgent action towards achieving vaccine security to safeguard public health. Recent initiatives have demons

Low- and middle-income countries with seasonal influenza immunization programs, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic were able to deliver vaccines faster and achieve, higher coverage compared to countries without such capabilities. Middle Income, (lower- and upper-) countries participating in the Partnership for International Vaccine, Initiatives (PIVI) described influenza processes and systems that contributed to more, efficient and effective COVID-19 mass vaccination campaigns because of existing, capacities. Some routine systems were easy to pivot while others required, modifications to address t

The convergence of infectious disease outbreaks, climate shocks, and conflict is exposing fundamental limitations in existing global health preparedness systems, which remain largely fragmented and disease-specific. Epidemics increasingly occur within multi-layered emergencies, where overlapping risks interact to overwhelm fragile health systems and complicate response efforts. This perspective examines structural gaps in current preparedness approaches, including siloed financing, limited integration of multi-sectoral intelligence, and constrained institutional autonomy. Drawing on a structur

The COVID-19 pandemic highlights the ongoing risk of zoonotic transmission of coronaviruses to global health. To prepare for future pandemics, it is essential to develop effective antivirals targeting a broad range of coronaviruses. Targeting the essential and clinically validated coronavirus main protease (Mpro), we constructed a structurally diverse Mpro panel by clustering all known coronavirus sequences by Mpro active site sequence similarity. Through screening, we identified a potent covalent inhibitor that engaged the catalytic cysteine of SARS-CoV-2 Mpro and used structure-based medicin

Pandemic influenza A (H1N1) commenced in April 2009. Robust planning and preparedness are needed to minimize the impact of a pandemic. This study aims to review if key elements of pandemic preparedness are included in national plans of European countries. Key elements were identified before and during the evaluations of the 2009 pandemic and are defined in this study by 42 items. These items are used to score a total of 28 publicly available national pandemic influenza plans. We found that plans published before the 2009 influenza pandemic score lower than plans published after the pandemic. P

BACKGROUND: Prior to the 2009 pandemic H1N1, and the unprecedented outbreak of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) caused by the H5N1 virus, the World Health Organization (WHO) called upon its Member States to develop preparedness plans in response to a new pandemic in humans. The WHO Member States responded to this call by developing national pandemic plans in accordance with the International Health Regulations (IHR) to strengthen the capabilities of Member States to respond to different pandemic scenarios. In this study, we aim to evaluate the quality of the preparedness plans in the W

BACKGROUND: Children in child care centers represent an important population to consider in attempts to mitigate the spread of an influenza pandemic. This national survey, conducted in 2008 and 2016, assessed directors' reports of their child care centers' pandemic influenza preparation before and after the 2009 H1N1 novel influenza pandemic.
METHODS: This was a telephone-based survey of child care center directors randomly selected from a national database of licensed US child care centers who were queried about their preparedness for pandemic influenza. We grouped conceptually related items

The United States continues to experience lower than expected vaccination rates against COVID-19 due to a variety of barriers such as lack of trust, lack of planning, cultural perspectives and issues, suboptimal communication, and political/economic conflicts of interest. In this paper issues of human behavior and decision-making are highlighted as integral to understanding the generally poor US response to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. In particular, the US pandemic response was significantly distorted through a combination of cultural and human behavior issues related to conflicting leadership, c

In the twenty-first century, severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), 2009 A(H1N1) influenza, and Ebola have all placed strains on critical care systems. In addition to the increased patient needs common to many disasters, epidemics may further degrade ICU capability when staff members fall ill, including in the course of direct patient care. In a large-scale pandemic, shortages of equipment and medications can further limit an ICU's ability to provide the normal standard of care. Hospital preparedness for epidemics must include strategies to maintain staff safety, secure adequate supplies, a

The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the critical role of reliable molecular diagnostics in outbreak response and the vulnerabilities of existing systems to delays and reagent instability. Armored RNA technology, which packages RNA within bacteriophage-derived capsids, offers a robust solution by combining nuclease resistance, safety, and versatility into a single platform. Armored RNA has become a trusted internal and external control for RT-qPCR and RT-LAMP, enabling accurate detection across a wide range of viral pathogens. Also, recent advances in alternative expression systems, such as plant

BACKGROUND: Libya faces recurrent and emerging health threats at the human, animal, and environment interface, compounded by prolonged instability and fragmented health systems. The National Bridging Workshop (NBW) is a structured approach to identify multisectoral collaboration gaps and develop a joint One Health Roadmap aligned with international health security frameworks. This study aimed to describe Libya's first NBW and evaluate its effect on increasing participants' One Healthknowledge.
METHODS: We conducted a quasi-experimental study using a single-group longitudinal design with pre-i

Zoonotic viruses continually pose a pandemic threat. Infection of humans with viruses for which we typically have little or no prior immunity can result in epidemics with high morbidity and mortality. These epidemics can have public health and economic impact and can exacerbate civil unrest or political instability. Changes in human behavior in the past few decades-increased global travel, farming intensification, the exotic animal trade, and the impact of global warming on animal migratory patterns, habitats, and ecosystems-contribute to the increased frequency of cross-species transmission e

In March 2013 it was reported by the World Health Organization (WHO) the first cases of human infections with avian influenza virus A (H7N9). From 2013 to December 2019, 1568 cases have been reported with 616 deaths. H7N9 infection has been associated with high morbidity and mortality rates, and vaccination is currently the most effective way to prevent infections and consequently flu-related severe illness. Developing and producing vaccines against pandemic influenza viruses is the main strategy for a response to a possible pandemic. This study aims to present the production of three industri

Novel low-pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) H5N2 viruses hit poultry farms in Taiwan in 2003, and evolved into highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) viruses in 2010. These viruses are reassortant viruses containing HA and NA genes from American-lineage H5N2 and six internal genes from local H6N1 viruses. According to a serological survey, the Taiwan H5N2 viruses can cause asymptomatic infections in poultry workers. Therefore, a development of influenza H5N2 vaccines is desirable for pandemic preparation. In this study, we employed reverse genetics to generate a vaccine virus having HA and N
