Pyelonephritis associated with Staphylococcus intermedius in a Siberian tiger (Panthera tigris altaica).

Pyelonephritis, in which Staphylococcus intermedius was isolated, was diagnosed in a 4-year-old female Siberian tiger (Panthera tigris altaica). At necropsy, the renal pelvis was dilated with a large amount of purulent exudates. Microscopically, the lesions of renal pelvis and medulla consisted of necrotic foci intermingled primarily with numerous degenerative neutrophils and a few lymphocytes, plasma cells and macrophages. Bacteriology showed the presence of S. intermedius. This is the first report on pyelonephritis associated with S. intermedius in wild felidae.

Cutaneous Amelanotic Signet-Ring Melanoma in a Siberian Tiger (Panthera tigris altaica).

A 15-year-old male white Siberian tiger (Panthera tigris altaica) was evaluated for an elevated, ulcerated, cutaneous mass on the right flank. The mass was removed by excisional biopsy and submitted for histopathology. Based on distinct histological features of intracytoplasmic globular material and positive immunohistochemical staining for Melan-A and vimentin, an amelanotic signet-ring melanoma was diagnosed. While in domestic cats this neoplasm is associated with malignancy and a short survival time, the tiger had no local recurrence or related clinical disease approximately 4 years post su

Klinefelter syndrome (39 XXY) in an adult Siberian tiger (Panthera tigris altaica).

Fibroblast cultures of a skin biopsy from an adult intact male Siberian tiger (Panthera tigris altaica) revealed an abnormal standard and G-banded karyotype diploid chromosome number of 2n = 39 XXY due to an extra sex chromosome as opposed to the expected 2n = 38 XY. The tiger was euthanatized 1 yr later due to acute multifocal intervertebral disc disease. Histopathology of the reproductive tract demonstrated a paucity of seminiferous tubules and these were devoid of spermatagonia. An increase in fibrous connective tissue was noted in sections of the prostate and epididymis, and expansion of t

Birth of Siberian tiger (Panthera tigris altaica) cubs after transvaginal artificial insemination.

A captive 9-yr-old female Siberian tiger (Panthera tigris altaica) at the Lisbon Zoo was treated with equine chorionic gonadotropin followed 80 hr later by human chorionic gonadotropin to stimulate follicular development and ovulation, respectively. Forty-one hours after the second hormone administration, the tiger was subjected to transvaginal artificial insemination with diluted fresh semen containing 500 x 10(6) motile spermatozoa obtained from an 8-yr-old male Siberian tiger via electroejaculation. After anesthesia, the female tiger was placed in an inclined position with the hind limbs el

Current State of In Vitro Embryo Production in African Lion (Panthera leo).

In the last 30-40 years, in vitro maturation (IVM) and fertilization (IVF) of domestic cat oocytes have been established as part of the panel of assisted reproduction technologies. As a representative of wild felids, the African lion is not yet considered endangered. Nevertheless, the zoo population management of the African lion itself as well as other closely related felids would benefit from the establishment of an IVF system. Here, we aimed to investigate the transferability of domestic cat IVF technology to the African lion. From the ovaries of 42 lionesses aged between 0.75 and 15 years,

Lateral Flank Approach for Ovariohysterectomy in a Lion (Panthera leo) with a Ruptured Pyometra.

An 8.5-year-old intact female lion (Panthera leo) with a history of vomiting, lethargy, and anorexia was referred to our institution. On physical examination, the lion weighed 180 kg and had a rectal temperature of 40 °C. Blood analysis showed mild neutrophilic leukocytosis, and abdominal ultrasonography revealed an enlarged uterus with echogenic fluid. Based on the clinical signs and hematologic and ultrasonographic findings, the lion was tentatively diagnosed with pyometra. Ovariohysterectomy was performed using the lateral flank approach to avoid complications that can occur with ventral ce

Aminoacyl tRNA synthetases as potential drug targets of the Panthera pathogen Babesia.

BACKGROUND: A century ago, pantheras were abundant across Asia. Illegal hunting and trading along with loss of habitat have resulted in the designation of Panthera as a genus of endangered species. In addition to the onslaught from humans, pantheras are also susceptible to outbreaks of several infectious diseases, including babesiosis. The latter is a hemoprotozoan disease whose causative agents are the eukaryotic parasites of the apicomplexan genus Babesia. Babesiosis affects a varied range of animals including humans (Homo sapiens), bovines (e.g. Bos taurus), pantheras (e.g. Panthera tigris,

Systemic apolipoprotein C-III amyloidosis in an Asian lion (Panthera leo persica).

Apolipoprotein C-III (ApoC-III) amyloidosis is an extremely rare systemic amyloidosis previously reported only in humans and white lions. This report describes the first case of ApoC-III amyloidosis in an Asian lion (16-year-old male) that died with clinical manifestations of renal failure. Histopathological and ultrastructural examinations identified amyloid deposits predominantly at the renal corticomedullary junction. Mass spectrometry and immunohistochemistry identified ApoC-III as an amyloid precursor protein. Sequencing of the lion's APOC3 gene found no pathogenic mutations, although lio

Feline Morbillivirus Infection Associated With Tubulointerstitial Nephritis in Black Leopards (Panthera pardus).

Feline morbillivirus (FeMV) is an emerging RNA virus in the Paramyxoviridae family that was recently discovered in domestic cats (Felis catus). To date, 2 genotypes (FeMV-1 and FeMV-2) have been detected in cats from various countries, and FeMV-1 is recognized as a pathogen associated with nephritis. However, information regarding the pathological roles and potential transmission to other felids is limited. In this article, we describe the identification of FeMV in 2 black leopards (Panthera pardus) in Thailand that showed severe azotemia and tubulointerstitial nephritis. Molecular analysis of

EVALUATION OF TWO CANINE DISTEMPER VIRUS VACCINES IN CAPTIVE TIGERS (PANTHERA TIGRIS).

Canine distemper virus (CDV) has caused clinical disease and death in nondomestic felids in both captive settings and in the wild. Outbreaks resulting in high mortality rates in tigers (Panthera tigris) have prompted some zoos to vaccinate tigers for CDV. In this study, six tigers received a recombinant canarypox-vectored CDV vaccine (1 ml s.c.) and were revaccinated with 3 ml s.c. (mean) 39 days later. Blood collection for CDV antibody detection via serum neutralization was performed on (mean) days 0, 26, and 66 post-initial vaccination. No tigers had detectable antibodies at days 0 or 26, an

Integrated genomic and structural dissection of melanism in Indian leopard (Panthera pardus fusca).

BACKGROUND: Melanism in wild felids represents an intriguing evolutionary trait, potentially advantageous under specific ecological conditions, but the genetic basis of this phenotype remains unclear in many populations. Here, we explored melanism in the Indian leopard (Panthera pardus fusca) by integrating whole-genome sequencing with evolutionary and structural analyses. RESULTS: We identified a single-point mutation (p.C117F) in the agouti signalling protein (ASIP) gene. Evolutionary analyses indicated signs of positive selection acting on the ASIP locus, while codon usage patterns reveale

Granulomatous pneumonia caused by Pythium insidiosum in a central American jaguar, Panthera onca.

A 7-month-old, male jaguar presented with dyspnea and leukocytosis unresponsive to antibiotic therapy. Radiographs revealed unilateral pulmonary consolidation. An exploratory thoracotomy was performed, and the left lung, which contained a large multilobular mass with extensive fibrosis and numerous caseonecrotic foci, was removed. Microscopically, eosinophilic granulomatous inflammation surrounded broad (4.4-8.3 microm) rarely septate hyphae. A diagnosis of Pythium insidiosum infection was confirmed by immunohistochemistry, immunoblot serology, culture, and polymerase chain reaction. Dyspnea r

Conducting successful mini-invasive laparotomy assisted artificial insemination in African Lion(Panthera leo).

Assisted reproductive technologies (ART), including artificial insemination (AI), represent promising tools for the conservation of genetic resources of vulnerable wild felid species. This study reports the application of AI in African lions ( Panthera leo), using fresh semen collected via urethral catheterization under general anesthesia. Semen samples were obtained from two adult male lions and subsequently analyzed for volume, motility, concentration, and morphology. A qualified sample, measuring 0.4 mL in volume, was extended at a 1:4 ratio, using 1.6 mL of a Tris-egg yolk-based extender.

Numeric and morphological studies of the African lion (Panthera leo leo) pectoral limb.

BACKGROUND: The Importance of the appendicular skeleton in the conformation, shape and physiology of wild animals especially carnivores for adaptation and survival cannot be overemphasized, as limited and obsolete information on the bones of the forelimb necessitated this study. Matured adult African lions (Male and female) that weighed 173 kg and 112 kg were obtained at different times after post mortem examinations of their carcasses. Bone preparation was achieved via cold water maceration after proper skin and muscle removal to a barest minimum. RESULTS: The acromion process of the scapula
