The feasibility of a crossover, randomized controlled trial design to assess the effect of probiotics and prebiotics on health of elite Swiss para-athletes: a study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Spinal cord injury (SCI) may cause an autonomic imbalance in the gastrointestinal tract, leading to deficits in colonic motility, mucosal secretions, vascular tone, and an increase of intestinal barrier permeability. Autonomic denervation and factors such as age, physical activity, antibiotic use and stress may cause intestinal bacterial translocation, decreased microbiota diversity, known as gut dysbiosis and thus increase susceptibility to experiencing gastrointestinal discomfort. Probiotic treatment in individuals with SCI may normalize the gut microbiota and improve overall hea

Pitfalls in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Low Back Pain in an Elite Para-athlete Successfully Treated by Transforaminal Full-endoscopic Discectomy with Thermal Annuloplasty: A Case Reports.

We report a rare case of an elite para-athlete with lumbar disk herniation whose pain generator was difficult to diagnose and treat. A 28-year-old woman with paraplegia below the T10 level felt pain in her low back and left leg during a match. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a lateral lumbar disk herniation and a high-intensity zone on the left side at the L5-L6 level. Because the pain disappeared following L5 selective nerve block, we performed transforaminal full-endoscopic discectomy alone. Despite the disappearance of leg pain after surgery, her low back pain persisted. We performed th

Concussion in para sport: the first position statement of the Concussion in Para Sport (CIPS) Group.

Concussion is a frequent injury in many sports and is also common in para athletes. However, there is a paucity of concussion research related to para sport, and prior International Concussion in Sport (CIS) consensus papers have not substantively addressed this population. To remedy this and to improve concussion care provided to para athletes, the concussion in para sport (CIPS) multidisciplinary expert group was created. This group analysed and discussed in-depth para athlete-specific issues within the established key clinical domains of the current (2017) consensus statement on CIS. Due to

Guiding Evidence-Based Classification in Para Sporting Populations: A Systematic Review of Impairment Measures and Activity Limitations.

BACKGROUND: As the focus of classification shifts towards an evidence-based approach, it is crucial to establish a robust system that relies on valid and reliable measures of impairment to ensure legitimate and competitive opportunities for all Para athletes. However, the lack of methods that possess the necessary measurement properties for assessing impairments in Para sporting populations presents significant challenges to developing an evidence-based classification system. OBJECTIVE: This review aimed to identify and evaluate measures of impairment and activity limitation measures that hav

Adaptive Cycling: Injuries and Health Concerns.

Para-cycling has high rates of acute injuries. The underlying medical conditions of para-athletes predispose these cyclists to injury patterns and sequelae different from those of their able-bodied counterparts. Such injuries include an increased incidence of upper-extremity and soft tissue injuries, along with predisposition for respiratory, skin, genitourinary, and heat-related illnesses. There are no validated sideline assessment tools or return-to-play protocols for sports-related concussion in wheelchair user para-athletes or those with balance deficits. Para-cyclists may be at increased

Stakeholders' Consensus to Guide the Minimum Impairment Criteria in Wheelchair Basketball.

The International Paralympic Committee athlete classification code mandates sports to have defined minimum impairment criteria, describing the minimum level of an eligible impairment an athlete must possess, to be able to participate in that sport. The aim of this study was to establish stakeholders' consensus for the minimum impairment criteria in wheelchair basketball. From a pool of 48 expert stakeholders (identified via an international medical and scientific working group), 39 completed a 4-round Delphi survey. Questions were answered on the method of assessing each eligible impairment, a

Sleep disruption considerations for Paralympic athletes competing at Tokyo 2020.

The role of sleep is now recognized as an important component for success in athletic performance, and sleep is proposed to be one of the most effective recovery strategies available. Insufficient sleep is commonly reported among athletes while several factors have been put forward to explain why elite athletes might experience poor sleep. However, Paralympic athletes may be predisposed to a greater risk of poor sleep due to the associated complexities of some impairment types. In fact, clinical research has previously shown that individuals with disabilities have a higher prevalence of sleep
