Phylogenetic origins of early alterations in brain region proportions.

Adult galliform birds (e.g. chickens) exhibit a relatively small telencephalon and a proportionately large optic tectum compared with parrots and songbirds. We previously examined the embryonic origins of these adult species differences and found that the optic tectum is larger in quail than in parakeets and songbirds at early stages of development, prior to tectal neurogenesis onset. The aim of this study was to determine whether a proportionately large presumptive tectum is a primitive condition within birds or a derived feature of quail and other galliform birds. To this end, we examined em

[Outbreak of acute histoplasmosis in Chilean travelers to the ecuadorian jungle: an example of geographic medicine].

Eight Chilean teenagers traveled to Ecuador in January 1999, where they were bitten by mosquitoes, had contact with parakeets and lodged in poorly hygienic places; 6/8 visited for 5-10 minutes the interior of a bat cave. About a week later these 6 began with headache, myalgia and fever that lasted 2-3 weeks. 5/6 had dry cough with no respiratory distress. The index case was seen in the 2nd week of symptoms. A chest x-ray showed multiple nodular infiltrates as in the other five. Two had histoplasma serology, one was negative and the other positive at a low titer; histoplasmin skin test showed i

Chlamydial psittacosis during pregnancy: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Chlamydia psittaci infection typically causes a mild influenza-like illness in humans. However, during pregnancy, this disease may present with severe headache, hypoxemia, thrombocytopenia, anemia, hepatic dysfunction, and disseminated intravascular coagulation. Limited reports of ovine-acquired psittacosis indicate appreciable maternal-fetal morbidity and mortality. CASE: A 19-year-old woman, gravida 1, para 0, at 32 weeks and 3 days' gestation developed C psittaci pneumonia after exposure to a parakeet. Worsening maternal respiratory status, development of a coagulopathy, and fe

Pathogenesis of Sarcocystis falcatula (Apicomplexa: Sarcocystidae) in the budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus). III. Pathologic and quantitative parasitologic analysis of extrapulmonary disease.

Forty-four budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus) were administered sporocysts of Sarcocystis falcatula orally and were examined at necropsy intervals from less than 12 hr to 168 days. Tissue were examined by touch preparations (of organ cut surfaces), light microscopy, and electron microscopy. Meront and cyst burdens were determined in various organs and correlated with duration of infection, inoculum, and the meront or cyst burdens of other organs. Host inflammatory tissue reactions were quantitated and correlated with meront and cyst burdens. Quantitation of meronts was more accurate in tiss

Diagnosis of Avian bornavirus infection in psittaciformes by serum antibody detection and reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction assay using feather calami.

Avian bornavirus (ABV) is the causative agent of proventricular dilatation disease (PDD), a highly devastating and contagious disease of psittacines (parrots and parakeets), which has resulted in the death of many captive birds. Accurate diagnosis of bornavirus infection is therefore important for the identification and isolation of infected birds. The current study showed that nonvascular contour (chest) feather calami provide a ready and minimally invasive source of RNA for the detection of ABV by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Storage of the feathers at room tempe

Reovirus infections associated with high mortality in psittaciformes in The Netherlands.

In The Netherlands between January 2002 and December 2004, numerous psittaciformes died showing severe splenomegaly and hepatomegaly with multifocal acute necrosis. At the start of the outbreaks mostly parakeets were affected, but later larger parrots were also involved. Seventy-eight birds showed the same features and six were examined completely, including a virological examination. Tests for polyomavirus, Pacheco's disease (herpesvirus) and circovirus psittacine beak and feather disease (PBFD) viruses and Chlamydophila psittaci were carried out. All results were negative, except for two cas

Budgerigar-fancier's lung: the commonest variety of allergic alveolitis in Britain.

A questionnaire survey of 1005 consecutive attenders at four outpatient clinics yielded 117 (12%) budgerigar fanciers (exposed to budgerigars- known in North America as parakeets-for at least three months) and 296 (29%) former fanciers. Twnety had precipitins to budgerigar serum or droppings or both, and 10 of these together with 39 precipitin-negative patients reported undue breathlessness on exertion during exposure to buderigars. These 59 patients were investigated further, seven completing a series of inhalation provocation tests with budgerigar antigens designed to confirm or exclude budg

Customs officers in relation to viral infections, tuberculosis, psittacosis and environmental health risk.

Customs Service is a financial authority responsible for controlling the flow of importation and exportation goods in each country and for collecting the relevant taxes. Customs officers are considered as 'high-demand' and 'high-responsibility' governmental officials, which constitute members of multidisciplinary teams at the local, as well as international level and collaborate with different authorities, including medical officers. Despite limited data in the medical literature, customs officers are considered as a 'high-risk' occupational group for infections and environmental health risk.

Feather-picking psittacines: histopathology and species trends.

Histologic findings are described for 408 feather-picking or self-mutilating psittacines with the use of biopsies from clinically affected and unaffected skin. Inflammatory skin disease was diagnosed in 210 birds, and traumatic skin disease was diagnosed in 198 birds. Criteria used for the diagnosis of inflammatory skin disease included the presence of perivascular inflammation in the superficial or deep dermis of clinically affected and unaffected sites. The primary histologic criteria for the diagnosis of traumatic skin disease were superficial dermal scarring with or without inflammation in

Stochastic delay derivatives of Newcastle disease application in epidemic model: Stability analysis and approximation.

The illicit trade in wildlife for pet purposes poses a direct risk to animal populations through overharvesting, but it also serves as an indirect conduit for the spread of contagious diseases. The present study assessed the effects of the hypothetical release of captured, infected individuals of Newcastle disease into the natural population of the white-winged parakeet, the most trafficked psittacine species in Peru. This study analysed the computational dynamical analysis of the stochastic susceptible-exposed-infected-recovered model of Newcastle disease. We take two approaches to stochastic

Genetic boundaries delineate the potential human pathogen Salmonella bongori into discrete lineages: divergence and speciation.

BACKGROUND: Salmonella bongori infect mainly cold-blooded hosts, but infections by S. bongori in warm-blooded hosts have been reported. We hypothesized that S. bongori might have diverged into distinct phylogenetic lineages, with some being able to infect warm-blooded hosts. RESULTS: To inspect the divergence status of S. bongori, we first completely sequenced the parakeet isolate RKS3044 and compared it with other sequenced S. bongori strains. We found that RKS3044 contained a novel T6SS encoded in a pathogenicity island-like structure, in addition to a T6SS encoded in SPI-22, which is commo

Herpetic Pneumonia in Indian Ringneck Parrots (Psittacula krameri): First Report of Novel Psittacid Alphaherpesvirus-5 Infection in Europe.

The first two European outbreaks of herpetic pneumonia caused by Psittacid alphaherpesvirus-5 were diagnosed based on gross pathology findings, histological examination, transmission electron microscopy visualization and genome sequencing. The outbreaks, characterized by high morbidity and high mortality rates, involved two parrot species, namely the Indian ringneck parrot (Psittacula krameri) and the Alexandrine parakeet (Psittacula eupatria). Clinical signs observed were ruffled feathers, dyspnea, tail bobbing, open wings while breathing, depression and anorexia. Necropsy was performed on In

Precipitins to different avaian serum antigens in bird fancier's lung and coeliac disease.

Precipitins to avian serum antigens have been found in the sera of bird fanciers and, until now, they have been considered strong supporting evidence for a clinical diagnosis of bird fancier's lung (BFL). We now report that 35% of patients with coeliac disease, none of whom had recently kept a bird, had precipitins against an avian serum antigen common to all the avian species tested, but which was distinct from the antigens usually associated with BFL. This antigen was a component of hen egg yolk but not of bird droppings. In patients with BFL the antibody response results from inhaled antige

[A case of psittacosis with wandering infiltrates developing to acute respiratory distress syndrome].

A 52-year-old woman visited a local hospital with a high fever, non-productive cough and general fatigue. Her chest X-ray showed infiltrate in the right middle lung field. Computed tomography scans revealed ground-glass opacity and surrounding ring-shaped air-space consolidation, the "reversed halo sign". Cefpirom was administered, but her symptoms persisted and the infiltrate migrated to the left upper lobe. As cryptogenic organizing pneumonia was suspected, she was then treated with intravenously pulsed methylprednisolone followed by prednisolone. Despite these therapies, acute respiratory f

Cryptosporidium avium n. sp. (Apicomplexa: Cryptosporidiidae) in birds.

The morphological, biological, and molecular characteristics of Cryptosporidium avian genotype V are described, and the species name Cryptosporidium avium is proposed to reflect its specificity for birds under natural and experimental conditions. Oocysts of C. avium measured 5.30-6.90 μm (mean = 6.26 μm) × 4.30-5.50 μm (mean = 4.86 μm) with a length to width ratio of 1.29 (1.14-1.47). Oocysts of C. avium obtained from four naturally infected red-crowned parakeets (Cyanoramphus novaezealandiae) were infectious for 6-month-old budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus) and hens (Gallus gallus f. dome

Molecular characterization of Giardia psittaci by multilocus sequence analysis.

Multilocus sequence analyses targeting small subunit ribosomal DNA (SSU rDNA), elongation factor 1 alpha (ef1α), glutamate dehydrogenase (gdh), and beta giardin (β-giardin) were performed on Giardia psittaci isolates from three Budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulates) and four Barred parakeets (Bolborhynchus lineola) kept in individual households or imported from overseas. Nucleotide differences and phylogenetic analyses at four loci indicate the distinction of G. psittaci from the other known Giardia species: Giardia muris, Giardia microti, Giardia ardeae, and Giardia duodenalis assemblages. Is abnormal retinal development in albinism only a mammalian problem? Normality of a hypopigmented avian retina.

The central retina in hypopigmented mammals is underdeveloped. In the outer retina this deficit is confined to rods. Also, many ganglion cells in temporal regions project inappropriately to the contralateral hemisphere. This study addresses the question of whether pigment-related abnormalities occur in the central retina of a non-mammal, the bird. Birds have a highly developed central retina, but unlike most mammals they do not have a significant uncrossed retinal projection. Consequently, examination of the retinae of hypopigmented birds will reveal whether there is a relationship between the

Phylogenetic analyses of Chlamydia psittaci strains from birds based on 16S rRNA gene sequence.

The nucleotide sequences of 16S ribosomal DNA (rDNA) were determined for 39 strains of Chlamydia psittaci (34 from birds and 5 from mammals) and for 4 Chlamydia pecorum strains. The sequences were compared phylogenetically with the gene sequences of nine Chlamydia strains (covering four species of the genus) retrieved from nucleotide databases. In the neighbor-joining tree, C. psittaci strains were more closely related to each other than to the other Chlamydia species, although a feline pneumonitis strain was distinct (983 to 98.6% similarity to other strains) and appeared to form the deepest
