A semi-parametric accelerated failure time cure model.

A cure model is a useful approach for analysing failure time data in which some subjects could eventually experience, and others never experience, the event of interest. A cure model has two components: incidence which indicates whether the event could eventually occur and latency which denotes when the event will occur given the subject is susceptible to the event. In this paper, we propose a semi-parametric cure model in which covariates can affect both the incidence and the latency. A logistic regression model is proposed for the incidence, and the latency is determined by an accelerated fa

Parametric representation and screening of knee joint vibroarthrographic signals.

We have been investigating analysis of knee joint vibration or vibroarthrographic (VAG) signals as a potential tool for noninvasive diagnosis and monitoring of cartilage pathology. In this paper, we present a comprehensive comparative study of different parametric representations of VAG signals. Dominant poles and cepstral coefficients were derived from autoregressive models of adaptively segmented VAG signals. Signal features and a few clinical features were used as feature vectors in pattern classification experiments based on logistic regression analysis and the leave-one-out method. The re

MPTP-induced behavioural and biochemical deficits: a parametric analysis.

Two experiments were performed to study the parametric effects of long-term administration of the neurotoxin, 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP), as a functional model of parkinsonism in mice. The behavioural deficits induced by different doses of MPTP (5, 10, 20, 30 or 40 mg/kg, s.c., each injected on two occasions) at a 3-week or a 3-month treatment-testing interval were evidenced by significant reductions of spontaneous motor activity, from the 10 mg/kg dosages upwards at the 3-week interval and from 30-40 mg/kg at the 3-month interval. Significant dopamine (DA) reductions

Prevalence and associated factors of teenage childbearing among Ethiopian women using semi-parametric and parametric proportional hazard and accelerated failure time models.

BACKGROUND: Teenage childbearing is a common issue for young people's sexual and reproductive health in the world, particularly in low-income countries, and affects teenagers between the ages of 13 and 19. According to several academics, adolescent pregnancy accounts for the majority of Ethiopia's population increase, and there has been little effort to address this threat. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and associated factors of the time to teenage childbearing in Ethiopia. METHOD: This paper compares the results of the semi-parametric proportional hazard (PH), parametric PH, a

Outcome risk model development for heterogeneity of treatment effect analyses: a comparison of non-parametric machine learning methods and semi-parametric statistical methods.

BACKGROUND: In randomized clinical trials, treatment effects may vary, and this possibility is referred to as heterogeneity of treatment effect (HTE). One way to quantify HTE is to partition participants into subgroups based on individual's risk of experiencing an outcome, then measuring treatment effect by subgroup. Given the limited availability of externally validated outcome risk prediction models, internal models (created using the same dataset in which heterogeneity of treatment analyses also will be performed) are commonly developed for subgroup identification. We aim to compare differe

Parametric and non-parametric confidence intervals of the probability of identifying early disease stage given sensitivity to full disease and specificity with three ordinal diagnostic groups.

In practice, there exist many disease processes with three ordinal disease classes, that is, the non-diseased stage, the early disease stage, and the fully diseased stage. Because early disease stage is likely the best time window for treatment interventions, it is important to have diagnostic tests that have good diagnostic ability to discriminate the early disease stage from the other two stages. In this paper, we present both parametric and non-parametric approaches for confidence interval estimation of probability of detecting early disease stage given the true classification rates for non

Hybrid atomistic-parametric decoherence model for molecular spin qubits.

Solid-state molecular qubits with open-shell ground states have great potential for addressability, scalability, and tunability, but understanding the fundamental limits of quantum coherence in these systems is challenging due to the complexity of the qubit environment. To address this, we develop a random Hamiltonian approach where the molecular g-tensor fluctuates due to classical lattice motion obtained from molecular dynamics simulations at constant temperature. Atomistic g-tensor fluctuations are used to construct Redfield quantum master equations that predict the relaxation T1 and dephas

Impact of the Design of Aortic Bioprostheses on Valve Function: A Parametric Study.

PURPOSE: Structural valve deterioration of aortic bioprosthetic heart valves (BHV) is influenced by leaflet mechanical stress, dependent on design parameters. This study provides a mathematical description of BHV geometry based on these geometric parameters and investigates their influence on valve function. METHODS: Ten BHV models with variations in geometric parameters were tested under controlled conditions in a cardiac simulator. The Trifecta valve TF-25 (Abbott) was used as a reference geometry to define the "normal" mathematical valve design and was also experimentally tested. The valve

Alterations in cortical surface morphometry in fibromyalgia: a multi-parametric study.

INTRODUCTION: Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic pain disorder with unclear neuroanatomical basis, as previous studies largely relied on volumetric measures insensitive to cortical surface morphology. This multi-parametric surface-based morphometry study examined cortical thickness (CT), fractal dimension (FD), gyrification index (GI), and sulcal depth (SD) in FM. METHODS: Thirty-three female FM patients and thirty-three age-matched female healthy controls (HC) underwent T1-weighted MRI. Group differences were assessed using non-parametric permutation testing (TFCE, p < .05). Correlations with cl

Mechanical power for trail and mountain running - Introduction of a parametric model.

Here, we present a model for calculating the mechanical power delivered by the metabolism while running in alpine settings. The aim is to quantify power for various conditions in trail and mountain running, using data from modern consumer sports watches and complementary acceleration sensors. After extending an existing analytical model by including collision losses, speed-dependent elastic energy storage, a force-rate contribution, and an additional power component accounting for upper-body movement, we generalize it to running uphill and downhill. We introduce additional power components to

Universal detection and segmentation of lymph nodes in multi-parametric MRI.

PURPOSE: Reliable measurement of lymph nodes (LNs) in multi-parametric MRI (mpMRI) studies of the body plays a major role in the assessment of lymphadenopathy and staging of metastatic disease. Previous approaches do not adequately exploit the complementary sequences in mpMRI to universally detect and segment lymph nodes, and they have shown fairly limited performance. METHODS: We propose a computer-aided detection and segmentation pipeline to leverage the T2 fat-suppressed (T2FS) and diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) series from a mpMRI study. The T2FS and DWI series in 38 studies (38 patient

Nyquist Plot Parametrization for Quantitative Analysis of Vibration of the Vocal Folds.

OBJECTIVES: The Nyquist plot provides a graphical representation of the glottal cycles as elliptical trajectories in a 2D plane. This study proposes a methodology to parameterize the Nyquist plot with application to support the quantitative analysis of voice disorders. METHODS: We considered high-speed videoendoscopy recordings of 33 functional dysphonia (FD) patients and 33 normophonic controls (NC). Quantitative analysis was performed by computing four shape-based parameters from the Nyquist plot: Variability, Size (Perimeter and Area), and Consistency. Additionally, we performed automatic

Flexible parametric copula modeling approaches for clustered survival data.

Copula-based survival regression models, which consist of a copula function and marginal distribution (i.e., marginal survival function), have been widely used for analyzing clustered multivariate survival data. Archimedean copula functions are useful for modeling such dependence. For the likelihood inference, one-stage and two-stage estimation methods have been usually used. The two-stage procedure can give inefficient estimation results because of separate estimation of the marginal and copula's dependence parameters. The more efficient one-stage procedure has been mainly developed under a r

Parametric Analysis and Stiffness Investigation of Extended End-Plate Connection.

Extended end-plate (EP) bolted connections are widely used in steel structures as moment-resisting connections. Most of these connections are semi-rigid or in other words flexible. The paper aims to study the behavior of such connections under the effect of column top-side cyclic loading using the finite element (FE) method. For semi-rigid connections, it is very vital to determine the moment-rotation relationship as well as the connection stiffness. These beam-column connections have been parametrically studied, the effect of joint type, shear forces, diameter of bolt, thickness of end-plate,

Quantitative Analysis and Classification of the Nasal Base Using a Parametric Model.

IMPORTANCE: The nasal base view is often overlooked in rhinoplasty analysis and, unlike lateral and frontal views, lacks detailed quantitative analysis and descriptors. While shape-category analysis of the nasal base is well established, these descriptive methods remain subjective and do not facilitate quantitative analysis. OBJECTIVE: To establish a simple and quantitative classification scheme using a multiple-parameter numerical model for analyzing and describing the shape of the nasal base. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Deidentified photographs of the nasal base view were analyzed w

Parametric effects of transcranial alternating current stimulation on multitasking performance.

BACKGROUND: We have previously demonstrated that transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) can generate positive effects on multitasking performance and associated neurophysiological measures when it is applied with anti-phase theta band stimulation across bilateral prefrontal cortex (PFC) and a short (1-min) inter-session interval (ISI). However, it is unclear how altering the phase of stimulation and the duration of the ISI might impact positive tACS effects. Here, we investigated the role of tACS parameters in engendering performance improvements by manipulating these two stimulat

Next generation of ventricular catheters for hydrocephalus based on parametric designs.

BACKGROUND: The flow pattern of the cerebrospinal fluid is probably the most important factor related to obstruction of ventricular catheters during the normal treatment of hydrocephalus. To better comprehend the flow pattern, we have carried out a parametric study via numerical models of ventricular catheters. In previous studies, the flow was studied under steady and, recently, in pulsatile boundary conditions by means of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in three-dimensional catheter models. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to bring in prototype models of catheter CFD flow solutions as well to
