Salivary secretion of immunoglobulin A by submandibular glands in response to autonomimetic infusions in anaesthetised rats.

Salivary secretion of immunoglobulin A (lgA) by submandibular glands is increased by stimuli from autonomic nerves. Since it is unclear which specific autonomic receptors transduce such stimuli, we have infused autonomimetics intravenously and compared secretion of fluid, IgA and stored proteins (peroxidase and total protein) with secretory responses during electrical stimulation of the parasympathetic nerve supply in anaesthetized rats. The greatest secretion of IgA was evoked by the alpha-adrenoceptor agonist phenylephrine and this was reduced by the beta-adrenoceptor blocking drug propranol

Intrinsic neuronal control of the pyloric sphincter of the lamb.

To better understand the local neuronal network of the gastro-duodenal junction in ruminants, we identified the components of the enteric nervous system (ENS) innervating the pyloric sphincter (PS) of the lamb abomasum. The neurons were labelled after injecting the tracer Fast Blue (FB) into the wall of the PS, and the phenotype of the FB-labelled neurons was immunohistochemically investigated using antibodies against nitric oxide synthase (NOS), choline acetyltransferase (ChAT), tachykinin (substance P) and tyrosine hydroxylase (TH). The FB-labelled abomasal myenteric plexus (MP) neurons, obs

Effects of isoflurane on parasympathetic vasodilatation in the rat submandibular gland.

Volatile anesthetics have been known to suppress parasympathetic reflex vasodilatation in the lower lip and palate. However, in the submandibular gland, little is known about the effects of these anesthetics on the parasympathetic vasodilatation elicited by reflex and direct (i.e., non-reflex) activation of the parasympathetic vasodilator mechanisms. Although both parasympathetic vasodilatations were inhibited by isoflurane in a concentration- and time-dependent manner, the effects of continuous administration of the alpha(1)-adrenoceptor agonist methoxamine were markedly different: The reflex

An update on the blood vessel in migraine.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The cranial blood vessel is considered an integral player in the pathophysiology of migraine, but its perceived role has been subject to much discussion and controversy over the years. We will discuss the evolution in our scientific understanding of cranial blood vessels (primarily arteries) in migraine. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent developments have clarified the role of cranial blood vessels in the trigemino-vascular system and in cortical spreading depression. An underlying theme is the intimate relation between vascular activity and neural function, and we will emphasize the

Reorganization of sympathetic preganglionic connections in cat bladder ganglia following parasympathetic denervation.

1. Experiments were undertaken to examine the mechanisms involved in the reorganization of sympathetic efferent pathways to the urinary bladder of the cat following chronic unilateral, parasympathetic preganglionic denervation of the bladder. 2. Electrical stimulation (10-30 Hz) of the hypogastric nerve in cats with an intact bladder innervation or on the normally innervated side of the bladder in unilaterally denervated preparations elicited low-amplitude (10-25 cmH2O) transient (10-30 s) bladder contractions and non-synaptic axonal volleys on bladder postganglionic nerves. However, after chr

Control of Neurotransmission by NaV1.7 in Human, Guinea Pig, and Mouse Airway Parasympathetic Nerves.

Little is known about the neuronal voltage-gated sodium channels (NaVs) that control neurotransmission in the parasympathetic nervous system. We evaluated the expression of the α subunits of each of the nine NaVs in human, guinea pig, and mouse airway parasympathetic ganglia. We combined this information with a pharmacological analysis of selective NaV blockers on parasympathetic contractions of isolated airway smooth muscle. As would be expected from previous studies, tetrodotoxin potently blocked the parasympathetic responses in the airways of each species. Gene expression analysis showed th

A novel treatment for keratitis sicca (Dry eye): Anatomical feasibility study.

Chronic dry eye (keratitis sicca) is a significant problem that in certain populations can result in corneal desiccation and the potential for blindness. Therefore, novel treatments for such disorders might decrease patient morbidity. The present study aimed to investigate a potential treatment for chronic dry eye via a cadaveric feasibility study. On 10 cadaveric sides, the parotid gland branch of the auriculotemporal nerve (ATN) was identified and anastomosed to an anterior superficial temporal branch (STb) of this same nerve. The STb was then transposed anteriorly and sutured to the lacrima

Effects of toxin of red tide, Ptychodiscus brevis, on canine tracheal smooth muscle: a possible new asthma-triggering mechanism.

The red tide toxin produced by Ptychodiscus brevis becomes airborne by the thrashing action of the surf and wind and induces cough, rhinorrhea, watery eyes, and sneezing in normal humans and wheezing in asthmatic patients. The mechanism of the contractile response induced by P. brevis toxin (PBTX) was investigated with isolated canine tracheal smooth muscle. Tetrodotoxin and atropine blocked the contractile effect of PBTX, and neostigmine potentiated the contraction. Mepyramine, phentolamine, methysergide, and chlorisondamine did not inhibit the effect of PBTX. This is the first description of

Specific targeting of ganglion cell sprouts provides an additional mechanism for restoring peripheral motor circuits in pelvic ganglia after spinal nerve damage.

The pelvic ganglia contain both sympathetic and parasympathetic neurons and provide an interesting model in which to study the effects of a distributed spinal nerve lesion. Previous animal studies have suggested that after either lumbar or sacral nerve injury, some functional connections are restored between preganglionic and postganglionic neurons. It has been proposed that this is because of intact preganglionic axons sprouting collaterals to supply denervated ganglion cells. However, this has never been demonstrated, and our study has investigated whether the ganglion cells themselves contr

Surgical interruption of postganglionic innervation of the sinoatrial nodal region.

Recent experiments have revealed synapses that selectively mediate right and left vagal regulation of sinoatrial function in the fat pad overlying and surrounding the right pulmonary vein complex. However, precise vagal postganglionic pathways to the sinoatrial region have remained obscure. Such pathways, including critically important neural inputs to sinoatrial and atrioventricular nodal regions, may be vulnerable to surgical approaches to atrial or intracardiac repair. The present experiments seek to delineate specific autonomic pathways to the sinoatrial region of the canine heart. The dis

Pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (PACAP) potently dilates middle meningeal arteries: implications for migraine.

Migraine is a debilitating neurological disorder characterized by mild to severe headache that is often accompanied by aura and other neurological symptoms. Among proposed mechanisms, dilation of the dural vasculature especially the middle meningeal artery (MMA) has been implicated as one component underlying this disorder. Several regulatory peptides from trigeminal sensory and sphenopalatine postganglionic parasympathetic fibers innervating these vessels have been implicated in the process including pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (PACAP). Although PACAP has been well desc

Bladder outlet obstruction causes up-regulation of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in bladder-projecting pelvic ganglion neurons.

Pelvic ganglion (PG) neurons relay sympathetic and parasympathetic signals to the lower urinary tract, comprising the urinary bladder and bladder outlet, and are thus essential for both storage and voiding reflexes. Autonomic transmission is mediated by activation of the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) in PG neurons. Previously, bladder outlet obstruction (BOO), secondary to benign prostatic hyperplasia, was found to increase soma sizes of bladder-projecting PG neurons. To date, however, it remains unknown whether these morphological changes are accompanied by functional plasticity in

Cavernous Nerve Injury by Radiation Therapy May Potentiate Erectile Dysfunction in Rats.

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVES: Radiation-induced erectile-dysfunction (RiED) is one of the most common side effects of radiation therapy (RT) and significantly reduces the quality of life (QoL) of cancer patients. Approximately 50% of prostate cancer patients experience RiED within 3 to 5 years after completion of RT. A series of vascular, muscular, and neurogenic injuries after prostate RT lead to RiED; however, the precise role of RT-induced neurogenic injury in RiED has not been fully established. The cavernous nerves (CN) are postganglionic parasympathetic nerves located beside the prostate gland tha

Pupil-sparing oculomotor nerve palsy caused by upward compression of a large posterior communicating artery aneurysm. Case report.

A 69-year-old woman without diabetes or hypertension presented with a large posterior communicating artery aneurysm projecting beneath the oculomotor nerve manifesting as a 2-week history of progressive diplopia. Neurological examination revealed external ophthalmoplegia and blepharoptosis without pupil involvement. Neuroimaging showed a large aneurysm in the left internal carotid artery projecting postero-inferiorly. Craniotomy and neck clipping of the aneurysm revealed the origin at the junction of the internal carotid artery and posterior communicating artery, and elevation of the oculomoto

The nervus intermedius: a review of its anatomy, function, pathology, and role in neurosurgery.

BACKGROUND: Geniculate neuralgia, although uncommon, can be a debilitating pathology. Unfortunately, a thorough review of this pain syndrome and the clinical anatomy, function, and pathology of its most commonly associated nerve, the nervus intermedius, is lacking in the literature. Therefore, the present study aimed to further elucidate the diagnosis of this pain syndrome and its surgical treatment based on a review of the literature. METHODS: Using standard search engines, the literature was evaluated for germane reports regarding the nervus intermedius and associated pathology. A summary o
