The autonomic nervous system and inflammation in chronic kidney disease.

The autonomic nervous system plays a crucial role in regulating physiological processes and maintaining homeostasis through its two branches: the sympathetic nervous system and the parasympathetic nervous system. Dysregulation of the autonomic system, characterized by increased sympathetic activity and reduced parasympathetic tone, is a common feature in chronic kidney disease (CKD) and cardiovascular disease. This imbalance contributes to a pro-inflammatory state, exacerbating disease progression and increasing the risk for cardiovascular events. The sympathetic system promotes inflammation b

Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation attenuates stroke-heart syndrome: The role of parasympathetic activity.

Stroke induces cardiac dysfunction, which increases poststroke mortality and morbidity. An imbalance in the autonomic nervous system resulting from brain injury may serve as the underlying mechanism. The present study investigated whether transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) attenuates poststroke cardiac dysfunction by activating the parasympathetic nervous system. Adult male mice were subjected to transient middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) and reperfusion surgery. The mice in the treatment group received repeated taVNS starting 60 min after the onset of cerebral isc

Slow deep breathing modulates cardiac vagal activity but does not affect peripheral glucose metabolism in healthy men.

Parasympathetic nervous system innervates peripheral organs including pancreas, hepatic portal system, and gastrointestinal tract. It thereby contributes to the regulation of whole-body glucose metabolism especially in the postprandial state when it promotes secretion of insulin and enhances its action in major target organs. We now aimed to evaluate the effect of parasympathetic modulation on human glucose metabolism. We used slow deep breathing maneuvers to activate the parasympathetic nervous system and tested for effects on metabolism during an oral glucose tolerance test in a randomized,

Induction of tetraspanin 13 contributes to the synergistic anti-inflammatory effects of parasympathetic and sympathetic stimulation in macrophages.

The autonomic nervous system plays an important role in the regulation of peripheral inflammation. Sympathetic nervous activation stimulates inflammatory gene expression and cytokines, whereas parasympathetic nervous activation suppresses the production of inflammatory cytokines by immune cells. However, most studies on the relationship between the autonomic nervous system and immune processes have analyzed a single branch of the autonomic nerves in isolation. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the effects of sympathetic and parasympathetic stimulation on macrophages, which are controlled

Effects of a parasympathetic blocker on the heart rate of loggerhead sea turtles during voluntary diving.

Diving bradycardia is a reduction in the heart rate mediated by the parasympathetic system during diving. Although diving bradycardia is pronounced in aquatic mammals and birds, the existence of this response in aquatic reptiles, including sea turtles, remains under debate. Using the parasympathetic blocker atropine, we evaluated the involvement of the parasympathetic nervous system in heart rate reduction of loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) during voluntary diving in tanks. The heart rate of the control group dropped by 40-60% from the pre-dive value at the onset of diving; however, a

Research Progress of Autonomic Nerve Regulation in the Treatment of Myocardial Infarction.

The autonomic nervous system imbalance caused by the overactivation of the sympathetic nerve and the weakened activity of the parasympathetic nerve is closely related to the occurrence and development of myocardial infarction.Autonomic nerve regulation is a new therapeutic approach aiming at inhibiting sympathetic activity and increasing parasympathetic activity. It encompasses magnetic nerve stimulation, optogenetic neuromodulation, and microinjection of botulinum toxin, which could promote the rebalance of the autonomic nervous system, thereby curbing the deterioration of the cardiac function and

Parkinson's disease with involvement of the parasympathetic ganglia.

We report the distribution of Lewy bodies in an 83-year-old man who was diagnosed histopathologically as having Parkinson's disease. Many sections were taken from the brain, spinal cord, spinal dorsal root ganglia and peripheral autonomic systems. In the central nervous system, Lewy bodies were present in many of the areas already reported by previous authors. In the peripheral nervous system, Lewy bodies were present in the sympathetic ganglia, enteric nervous system of the alimentary tract and the submandibular ganglion, which is a peripheral parasympathetic ganglion. The present case indica

Biochemical and pharmacologic assessment of autonomic function.

Autonomic failure produces distinct pathophysiological abnormalities that differ according to the site and nature of the lesion(s). Although the anatomic organization and processes mediating chemical neurotransmission in the autonomic nervous system facilitate clinical investigation, limited access to the central compartment hampers evaluation of central neurotransmitter metabolism and neuropeptide function. As illustrated in the discussions of noradrenergic and cholinergic function, several indirect strategies have been used to assess the biochemical and neuropharmacologic consequences of aut

Evidence of dominant parasympathetic nervous activity of great cormorants (Phalacrocorax carbo).

The characteristics of autonomic nervous activity were examined on captive great cormorants Phalacrocorax carbo hanedae, using a power spectral analysis of heart rate variability. Heart rates were calculated from recordings of the electrocardiograms of the birds via embarked data loggers. We investigated the effects of blockades of the sympathetic or parasympathetic nervous systems using the indices of autonomic nervous activity such as high frequency (0.061-1.5 Hz) component, low frequency (0.02-0.060 Hz) component and the low frequency power component to high frequency power component ratio.

Perceived support and resting respiratory sinus arrhythmia among young adult college students.

Although social support is related to better health, research is mixed regarding how social support relates to physiological systems including the parasympathetic nervous system. The present study assessed whether perceived parental and friend support were related to resting parasympathetic nervous system activity among young adults, and whether associations differed by stress. Young adults (N = 154; Mage = 20.5, SD = 3.0; 73.4% female) reported their perceived support from their parents and friends. Electrocardiogram data were collected while participants watched a 4-minute nature video to es

[Brain-gut interactions].

Our digestive tract has an autonomous functioning but also has a bidirectional relation with our brain known as brain-gut interactions. This communication is mediated by the autonomous nervous system, i.e., the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, with a mixed afferent and efferent component, and the circumventricular organs located outside the blood-brain barrier. The vagus nerve, known as the principal component of the parasympathetic nervous system, is a mixed nerve composed of 90% afferent fibers, which has physiological roles due to its putative vegetative functions. The vagus

Isoproterenol-induced expression of the cystatin S gene in submandibular glands of parasympathectomized rats.

Parasympathetic innervation of rat submandibular and parotid glands regulates saliva volume, its rate of secretion and its composition. It also has a regulatory role in hypertrophy and hyperplasia of salivary glands, and in the expression of specific sets of genes. Rat cystatin S is a member of family 2 of the cysteine proteinase inhibitor superfamily. Cystatin S gene expression is tissue- and cell type-specific, temporally regulated during postnatal development, and not observed in adult animals. Isoproterenol (IPR), a beta-adrenergic agonist, induces hypertrophic and hyperplastic enlargement

Autonomic nervous system dysregulation in neurodegenerative diseases: Bridging brain and heart.

Autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysregulation is commonly observed in a class of neurodegenerative disorders known as α-synucleinopathies including Parkinson's disease (PD), Dementia with Lewy Bodies, Multiple System Atrophy (MSA), and Pure Autonomic Failure. The ANS controls involuntary functions such as heart rate, blood pressure, digestion, and respiratory rate, and its disruption can significantly impact patients' quality of life. In neurodegenerative disorders, damage to brain regions that regulate the ANS, such as the brainstem and hypothalamus, leads to impaired autonomic functions. The

Effect of perioperative autonomic nervous system imbalance on surgical outcomes: a systematic review.

The autonomic nervous system (ANS) is essential for maintaining physiological homeostasis. Autonomic nervous system imbalance, characterised by sympathetic hyperactivation and low parasympathetic tone, can occur during the perioperative period. These changes drive systemic stress responses, cardiovascular instability, impaired tissue repair, and immunosuppression, which in turn increase infection risk, neurocognitive decline, and multiorgan dysfunction. Surgical trauma, anaesthesia, pain, hypothermia, and psychological stressors all contribute to this dysregulation, and consequently low parasy

Anticholinergic drugs in nonallergic rhinitis.

BACKGROUND: The parasympathetic nervous system contributes to the pathophysiology of multiple forms of allergic and nonallergic rhinitis. Stimulation of the parasympathetic nervous system leads to glandular activation, which produces watery secretions. In excess, these secretions discharge from the anterior Nares and produce the symptom of watery anterior rhinorrhea. METHOD: Review of literature. RESULTS: Treatment with topical, intranasal anticholinergic drugs inhibits activation of the nasal mucosal glands and is effective in reducing the watery secretions associated with parasympathetic s

[Acute autonomic neuropathy and the other related diseases].

In 1969, Young et al. described a patient with an acquired, pure pan-dysautonomia of unknown etiology, involving both the sympathetic and the parasympathetic nervous systems without other neurological manifestations. Since then, a number of similar cases have been described. More recently, reports have appeared of predominantly cholinergic dysautonomia, of dysautonomia associated with infection, and of dysautonomia with other impairment of nervous function. As an etiology, immunological disorder has been suggested but the precise mechanism has not been clarified. By accumulating more cases, a

Autonomic Nervous System in Viral Myocarditis: Pathophysiology and Therapy.

Myocarditis, which is caused by viral infection, can lead to heart failure, malignant arrhythmias, and even sudden cardiac death in young patients. It is also one of the most important causes of dilated cardiomyopathy worldwide. Although remarkable advances in diagnosis and understanding of pathophysiological mechanisms of viral myocarditis have been gained during recent years, no standard treatment strategies have been defined as yet. Fortunately, recent studies present some evidence that immunomodulating therapy is effective for myocarditis. The immunomodulatory effect of the autonomic nervo
