OBJECTIVE: To explore healthcare personnel's (HCP) lived experiences of caring for dying newborns and supporting bereaved parents in neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), drawing on relational, ethical and organisational factors.
DESIGN: Qualitative study using hermeneutic phenomenology. Semistructured, in-depth interviews analysed thematically to interpret the meanings embedded in participants' narratives.
SETTING: Three tertiary NICUs in the UK.
PARTICIPANTS: Eight female HCP (five nurses, three doctors) with 3-20 years' (median=12 years) NICU experience.
RESULTS: Experiences were strongl

BACKGROUND: Policymakers use clinical and cost-effectiveness evidence to support decisions about health service commissioning. In England, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommend that in cost-effectiveness analyses "effectiveness" is measured as quality-adjusted life years (QALYs), derived from health utility values. The impact of perinatal death (stillbirth/neonatal death) on parents' health utility is currently unknown. This knowledge would improve the robustness of cost-effectiveness evidence for policymakers.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to estimate the impac

This chapter is adapted from Pregnancy Loss and the Death of a Baby: Guidelines for Professionals (3rd edition) by Judith Schott, Alix Henley and Nancy Kohner, published by Sands (the UK Stillbirth and Neonatal Death charity) in 2007. The article highlights those aspects of care given to families facing perinatal loss that parents value and those that add, often inadvertently, to their distress. It is based on research findings and on views expressed by parents.

BACKGROUND: The death of a child is one of the most devastating experiences for parents, yet some may experience positive changes known as posttraumatic growth (PTG). We aimed to describe PTG in bereaved parents whose child died of cancer, compare it to PTG in parents of childhood cancer survivors, and identify sociodemographic and child-related characteristics associated with PTG in bereaved parents.
METHODS: This multicenter cross-sectional study included parents who lost a child to cancer (diagnosed ≤ 18 years and > 1 year after death). Data from the Swiss Childhood Cancer Survivor Study-P

BACKGROUND: Understanding why children die is important for grieving parents and for informing system improvements aimed at prevention and future care. Many countries have child death review (CDR) process, but little is known about how best to engage parents. The aim of this study was to use experience-based co-design to create a toolkit to support parental involvement in CDR.
METHODS: A survey of English paediatric intensive care units (PICUs) and palliative care services explored practices and identified a diverse sample of sites for professional interviews. Bereaved parents were recruited

Understanding parents' experience of care is essential to develop high-quality perinatal bereavement services. This study aimed at developing a questionnaire to identify parents' needs and record their experience of care. The patient experience questionnaire was developed by professionals and parents, and piloted in a tertiary maternity unit. Responses were received from 58 parents. Sensitivity and kindness of staff and time spent with their baby were ranked as 'very important' by 95% of parents. Care in these areas largely met their needs (90%), although 5% of respondents stated that partners

OBJECTIVE: To assess grief and post-traumatic growth in parents 2-6 years after the death of a premature baby (24-26 weeks' gestation) and to evaluate Pictorial Representation of Illness and Self-Measure (PRISM) in the assessment of bereavement.
METHOD: Fifty-four parents were assessed for their experiences during hospitalization and by questionnaires regarding grief (MTS), post-traumatic growth, affective symptoms and the visual representation of the baby and the self of the parents (PRISM).
RESULTS: Even 2-6 years after the loss of their extremely preterm infant the parents still suffer a

BACKGROUND: Clinical and epidemiological evidence suggests that adults who have experienced the death of a parent or caregiver in childhood are at elevated risk for adverse health outcomes. The aim of this study was to examine cross-national variation in indicators of health and wellbeing among adults who experienced the death of a parent by age 12 years.
METHODS: In this retrospective, outcome-wide analysis, we analysed data from Wave 1 of the Global Flourishing Study, a 5-year pre-registered longitudinal panel study (2024-28) of nationally representative adult participants (N=202 898) aged

OBJECTIVE: The authors sought to determine the long-term impact of sudden parental death on youths and pathways between youth bereavement and impairment.
METHODS: Youths (N=216) who lost a parent to suicide, accident, or sudden natural death and nonbereaved youths (N=172) were followed periodically for up to 7 years. The incidence and prevalence of disorder and of functional impairment, as well as pathways to impairment, were assessed using Cox and mixed-effects logistic regression and structural equation modeling.
RESULTS: Prior to parental death, bereaved youths had higher rates of psychia

Although previous studies have suggested that childhood trauma and parental death are strongly associated with suicidality in adulthood, it is still unclear how these factors interact within the same population. A total of 1396 adults were recruited through nationwide multistage probability sampling in South Korea. Subjects were evaluated through face-to-face interviews using the Suicidality Module of the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview and the Early Trauma Inventory Self Report-Short Form. Among the 1396 adults, the group that experienced both childhood trauma and parental death

OBJECTIVES: (1) Examine the psychometric properties of two parallel measures of HIV-related stigma (i.e., perceived public stigma and children's personal stigma against people living with HIV/AIDS [PLWHA]) among children affected by HIV/AIDS. (2) Examine whether expressions of stigma measures differ by child's sex, developmental stage, family socioeconomic status (SES), or orphanhood status (i.e., AIDS orphans, vulnerable children, and comparison children). (3) Examine the association between HIV-related stigma and children's psychosocial adjustments among these children.

BACKGROUND: The psychological toll on parents of a child receiving a cancer diagnosis is known to be high, but there is a knowledge gap regarding suicidal behavior among these parents. The aim of this study was to investigate the risk of suicide attempt and death by suicide in relation to having a child with cancer.
METHODS AND FINDINGS: We performed a binational population-based and sibling-controlled cohort study, including all parents with a child diagnosed with cancer in Denmark (1978 to 2016) or Sweden (1973 to 2014), 10 matched unexposed parents per exposed parent (population comparison

Can a parent adjust to the idea that its child is at risk for a sudden death? This question is raised by a diagnostic procedure in which children were tested for an inherited Long QT Syndrome (LQTS). This potentially life-threatening but treatable cardiac arrhythmia syndrome may cause sudden death, especially in children and young adults. The long-term psychological effects are described for parents whose children were tested for inherited LQTS. The adverse short-term impact of such testing has been described previously. The goal of this investigation is to determine whether this distress endu

Literature exploring impacts of parental death on young people demonstrates profound effects both individually, and within the family system. Family roles and responsibilities may change for all, with potential additive impacts of socio-economic status (SES), but these are presently under-explored. The present study therefore aims to address this knowledge gap. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight Black adolescents aged 16-18 years, identified as having low SES. Data were analyzed verbatim using interpretative phenomenological analysis. Five themes were developed, each containi

BACKGROUND: Childhood trauma (CT) is associated with depression, anxiety, and suicide-related thoughts in adolescents. However, the item-level associations linking trauma-related experiences with internalizing symptoms and thoughts of self-harm or death remain unclear.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of 2,413 adolescents who completed the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire-Short Form (CTQ-SF), Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7). Symptom-level associations were examined using a Spearman-EBICglasso network, with a polychoric network a

INTRODUCTION: The death of a baby is devastating for parents, families and staff involved. Involving bereaved parents in their baby's care and in the maternity hospital perinatal death review can help parents manage their bereavement and plan for the future. In Ireland, bereaved parents generally have not been involved in this review process. The aim of our study was to assess parents' perception of how they may be appropriately involved in the maternity hospital perinatal death review in ways that benefit them and the review process itself.
METHODS: Bereaved parents (n = 20) in Ireland were

OBJECTIVE: This study examined effects of bereavement 21 months after a parent's death, particularly death by suicide.
METHOD: The participants were 176 offspring, ages 7-25, of parents who died by suicide, accident, or sudden natural death. They were assessed 9 and 21 months after the death, along with 168 nonbereaved subjects.
RESULTS: Major depression and alcohol or substance abuse 21 months after the parent's death were more common among bereaved youth than among comparison subjects. Offspring with parental suicide or accidental death had higher rates of depression than comparison subjec

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: Parenting a child with type 1 diabetes has been associated with stress-related symptoms. This study aimed to elucidate the potential impact on parental risk of major cardiovascular events (MCE) and death.
METHODS: In this register-based study, we included the parents of 18,871 children, born 1987-2020 and diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in Sweden at <18 years. The median parental age at the child's diagnosis was 39.0 and 41.0 years for mothers and fathers, respectively. The cohort also encompassed 714,970 population-based matched parental control participants and 12,497 parent
