This article examines lesbian existence as a form of resistance within the family, a central institution for the reproduction of gender, sexuality, and moral norms in Colombia. Drawing on 23 in-depth interviews conducted between 2021 and 2023 with Afro-descendant and white/mestiza lesbian women in Cali, this study asks how lesbian daughters navigate intrafamilial lesbophobic violence, negotiate belonging within the parental home, and develop strategies to remain in, leave, or redefine family relationships. Using discourse analysis complemented by thematic analysis, the study identifies four re

This research examines whether parental educational attainment and subjective childhood socioeconomic status (SES) is associated with adult offspring well-being and self-beliefs (broadly defined). Participants from the Health and Retirement Study were included if they completed the leave-behind questionnaire in 2006 or 2008 (N=10,827; Mage=68.38; SD=9.81; range=50-101). Participants reported on their own and both parents educational attainment, subjective childhood financial situation, and financial difficulties in childhood at study entry and on well-being in 2006/2008. Linear regression was

In a 1991 study based on a nationally representative sample of more than 1,500 unmarried minors having an abortion, 61% of the respondents said that one or both of their parents (usually the mother) knew about the abortion. Only 26% of the respondents said their father knew about the abortion; furthermore, 57% of the mothers who knew about their daughter's pregnancy did not tell her father. In this study, which was conducted in states without parental involvement laws in effect, about 75% of the parents who knew about the pregnancy had been told by the daughter herself, and the great majority

Fatigue is a common complaint among women throughout pregnancy and during the postpartum period. It is suggested that there are physical, psychological, and situational factors predisposing a woman to fatigue during pregnancy. Several studies have attempted to correlate levels of fatigue with other variables. While many of these studies have noted an association between stress and fatigue related to work or home environment and the increased risk of antenatal morbidity, the mechanism of these effects is unclear. It is important for health care professionals, family members, and employers to re

Compared to girls, boys are more at risk of early school leaving. However, it is unclear whether gender differences are driven by push factors, which alienate students from the school system, or pull factors, which attract them out of it. This paper examines gender differences in early school leaving, assessing the role of previous scholastic performance, parental education, and differential employment opportunities. By analyzing two nationally representative datasets, we focus on Italy, a country with high rates of early school leaving and pronounced gender inequalities in the labor market. O

Empirical evidences on intragenerational transmission of life course have been demonstrated and that interpersonal similarity may moderate the effect. In particular, siblings who are more similar in their demographic characteristics are more likely to follow each other's life course transitions. Focusing on parental home-leaving and building upon the social influence processes and similarity-attraction effects, this study investigates whether the association between siblings' departures from the parental home increases when they are similar in the Big Five personality traits, like similarity i

BACKGROUND: The law in Lebanon allows new mothers to take up to 10 weeks paid maternity leave, and some private organizations choose to give fathers 2 days of paternity leave in the absence of clear legislation. This falls short of the 6 months recommended for mothers in the literature.
METHODS: The sample consisted of 97 Lebanese mothers with children between 6 and 24 months of age. First, we examined correlations between the length of maternity leave and measures of work productivity and maternal sense of competence in their new role as a parent. Second, we explored correlations between the

Since modern welfare reform began in the 1980s, we have seen low-income parents leave the welfare rolls and join the workforce in large numbers. At the same time, the Earned Income Tax Credit has offered a monetary incentive for low-income parents to work. Thus, unlike some of the other two-generation mechanisms discussed in this issue of Future of Children, policies that encourage low-income parents to work are both widespread and well-entrenched in the United States. But parents' (and especially mothers') work, writes Carolyn Heinrich, is not unambiguously beneficial for their children. On t

Paid Family and Medical Leave (PFML) programs provide material resources and time away from the labor force around the time of a child's birth. Past research indicates that the programs improve maternal and child health and may increase fertility. To date, 13 states and the District of Columbia have passed PFML laws, with varying lengths of leave, eligibility, job protections, and benefit levels. Programs in states other than California remain understudied. We examined the effects of New York State's (NYS) PFML program on birth outcomes using difference-in-differences (DiD) models with data fr

INTRODUCTION: As of 2024, paid paternity leave was available in 102 countries worldwide. However, the accessibility and methods of taking paternity leave are influenced by cultural background and individual values, leading to variations in uptake rate. Both positive and negative effects of paternity leave have been reported on the health of fathers, partners and children. A comprehensive understanding of this topic is essential for medical professionals supporting fathers undertaking childcare. The aim of this review is to identify and provide an overview of research related to the impact of p

AIM: To examine equity and respectful care for women and infants from five perspectives: the global context; economic issues; healthcare systems; legal and policy issues; opportunities to benefit from biomedical research.
METHODS: Narrative review.
RESULTS: Healthcare accounts for half the variance in health in low-income countries and substantially less in high-income settings; however, healthcare investment remains efficient and equitable. Gross Domestic Product (GDP) affects women and infants disproportionately. Women undertake the major proportion of domestic and childcare duties includi

BACKGROUND: This study examines how the parents of adolescents and young adults with biliary atresia, surviving with their native livers, transfer medical treatment responsibility to their children, and how becoming a living liver transplant donor affects this process. The basis for the study was that becoming a living liver transplant donor may influence the transfer of responsibility.
METHODS: A qualitative, descriptive design was employed using a modified grounded theory approach. Data were collected from eight parents from November 2016 to August 2017 through semi-structured interviews co

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) with poor insight can contribute to the refusal to receive treatment, leaving the burden of care on parents or other caregivers. The case presented here involved a young adult with OCD with delusional levels of insight paired with extreme family-accommodating behaviors that had resulted in impaired quality of life and functioning for the young adult and his parents. A parent-led behavioral intervention [The Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions (SPACE)] that was developed for children with anxiety was adapted and utilized for a young adult with

OBJECTIVE: We sought to characterize demographics, costs, and workplace support for surgeons using assisted reproductive technology (ART), adoption, and surrogacy to build their families.
SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA: As the surgical workforce diversifies, the needs of surgeons building a family are changing. ART, adoption, and surrogacy may be used with greater frequency among female surgeons who delay childbearing and surgeons in same-sex relationships. Little is known about costs and workplace support for these endeavors.
METHODS: An electronic survey was distributed to surgeons through surgic

OBJECTIVES: The United States remains the only high-income nation without a national paid family leave (PFL) policy. It also has persistently high maternal and infant mortality rates. Understanding PFL impacts on perinatal health is critical. We determined the impact of state PFL policies on perinatal health, with additional focus on socioeconomic disparities.
METHODS: We analyzed live singleton births using 2016 to 2022 birth certificate data (N = 11 452 411). We conducted a quasi-experimental analysis using heterogeneity-robust differences in differences, comparing pre-post trends in a comp

BACKGROUND: Growing research points to economic policies as protective mechanisms for vulnerable families. Research on pediatric abusive head trauma suggests that paid family leave (PFL) may protect infants in the general population from physical abuse.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the association of state-level paid family leave policies with infant (ages 0-1) maltreatment rates.
PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: A state-level panel dataset was constructed from the National Child Abuse and Neglect Data System (2002-2019) data on infant maltreatment investigations among four states with PFL (California, Ne

Migratory separation, when parents migrate and leave their children behind, was investigated in a case-control sample of 9- to 10-year-olds living in inner-city communities in Kingston and St Andrew, Jamaica (N = 54). Data analyses using descriptive statistics and bivariate correlations showed that children's reactions to their parents' migration were directly related to poor school performance and psychological difficulties. Additionally, being currently exposed to violence in the home and/or community was significantly associated with high scores on a measure of grief intensity. "Protective"
