An outbreak of Salmonella Saintpaul in a Scottish childcare facility: the influence of parental under-reporting.

BACKGROUND: Salmonella outbreaks in childcare facilities are relatively rare, most often occurring secondary to contaminated food products or poor infection control practices. We report an outbreak of Salmonella Saintpaul at a pre-school facility in Ayrshire, Scotland with atypical clinical and epidemiological features. METHODS: Following notification of the initial two cases, the multi-disciplinary Incident Management Team initiated enhanced active case finding and two environmental inspections of the site, including food preparation areas. Parent and staff interviews were conducted by the P

Sexually Transmitted Infection Prevalence, Partner Notification, and Human Immunodeficiency Virus Risk Perception in a Cohort of Women Completing Sexually Transmitted Infection Screening as Part of a Safer Conception Study.

BACKGROUND: Integrating sexually transmitted infection (STI) and preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) care may optimize sexual and reproductive health. METHODS: We nested an STI substudy within a human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) prevention cohort (parent study) of 18- to 35-year-old women from South Africa, planning pregnancy with a partner with HIV or of unknown serostatus. Parent-study women completed annual surveys regarding HIV-risk perceptions and were offered oral PrEP. Preexposure prophylaxis initiators completed quarterly plasma tenofovir (TFV) testing. Substudy women completed STI screen

Examining the whole-cell pertussis vaccine scare and its repercussions.

In 1974, a paper published in Archives described a series of children who suffered serious acute and, usually long-term, neurological events after inoculation with the combined diphtheria/tetanus/pertussis vaccine. Despite this being a case series, with no controls, the authors posited a causal connection and blamed the whole-cell pertussis component. This message was taken up by the UK media and raised in Parliament. Almost overnight the uptake of the combined vaccine fell and notifications of pertussis rose. It took 15 years for uptake of the vaccine to recover.Twenty-four years following pu

Effects of Enhancing School-Based Body Mass Index Screening Reports with Parent Education on Report Utility and Parental Intent To Modify Obesity Risk Factors.

BACKGROUND: School-based body mass index screenings (SBMIS) have been controversial. We aimed to determine if parents would indicate improved utility with SBMIS when the report included parent education and whether parental intent to modify obesity risk factors would vary with report type or child weight. METHODS: A cluster-controlled trial was conducted with 31 elementary schools randomized to distribute a standard SBMIS report or the standard report plus education (SBMIS+). A random subsample of parents completed a mailed survey (731 SBMIS, 738 SBMIS+). Using a two-stage cluster sampling de

Visual-Based Children and Pet Rescue from Suffocation and Incidence of Hyperthermia Death in Enclosed Vehicles.

Over the past several years, many children have died from suffocation due to being left inside a closed vehicle on a sunny day. Various vehicle manufacturers have proposed a variety of technologies to locate an unattended child in a vehicle, including pressure sensors, passive infrared motion sensors, temperature sensors, and microwave sensors. However, these methods have not yet reliably located forgotten children in the vehicle. Recently, visual-based methods have taken the attention of manufacturers after the emergence of deep learning technology. However, the existing methods focus only on

Implementation of No-Test Medication Abortions in Primary Care: A Roadmap from an Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine Clinic.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Over 2 years post-Roe, 22 states have banned or significantly limited abortion access, exacerbating existing structural barriers to abortions for adolescents and young adults (AYAs), including cost, transportation, parental notification requirements, and confidentiality concerns. We provide a roadmap for and demonstrate the feasibility of implementing no-test medication abortions (MABs) to expand abortion access in an adolescent-focused pediatric primary care setting. METHODS: An interdisciplinary team in an AYA-focused primary care clinic developed and implemented a no-test

[Survey of patients with advanced-stage Okinawa-type neurogenic muscular atrophy (hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy with proximal dominant involvement: HMSN-P)].

We conducted a survey of 16 Japanese patients (9 males, 7 females) aged 48-70 years in the advanced-stage Okinawa-type neurogenic muscular atrophy (i.e. hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy with proximal dominant involvement: HMSN-P) by a questionnaire asking the patients' disease name notification, acceptance, and expectations for treatment. In amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), since symptoms such as four-limb motor weakness and respiratory disorder are serious, patients are notified of the disease name at each progression stage. Individuals with HMSN-P exhibit ALS-like severe motor par

[Vaccination offers good protection against measles, mumps and rubella. To refuse vaccination would seriously threaten our good immunity status].

Since vaccination against measles, rubella and mumps (MMR) was introduced in Sweden in 1982 for children at 1.5 and 12 years of age these diseases have almost completely disappeared. Severe side effects have been rare. Threats against the continued protection from these diseases include a lessening inclination on the part of parents to vaccinate their children, a weakening of the vaccine-induced immunological response with time, and possibly also genetic changes in strains of circulating wild type virus. By law physicians are bound to report diagnosed cases as well as new or severe side effect

Prevalence of hepatitis B surface antigen and antibody (hepatitis B virus markers) in personnel at a children's hospital.

After two cases of acute hepatitis B infection occurred in phlebotomists at The Hospital for Sick Children in 1985, a seroprevalence survey of hepatitis B virus markers was undertaken. Directors in high-risk areas were advised by phone and memorandum to screen employees. Participation was entirely voluntary, and employees who did not respond were contacted six weeks after initial notification. Information obtained from each participant through a self-administered questionnaire included age, duration of employment in current pediatric occupation, history of blood transfusions, immune globulin p

A retrospective cohort study on the association between mothers' prolonged internet usage and severe early childhood caries in their children.

OBJECTIVES: Severe early childhood caries (S-ECC) is a child health challenge associated with neglect and represents a public health concern that can impact development and future lifestyle-related diseases. Despite its significance, studies identifying its associated factors have been scarce in developed countries. The aim of this study was to clarify the association between mothers' prolonged Internet usage when their children are 1.5 years old and S-ECC at 3 years old. METHODS: We included mothers who had notified Matsue City of their pregnancies during the 18-month period from April 2016
