Lasting benefits of embryonic eavesdropping on parent-parent communication.

Developing embryos have traditionally been viewed as passive agents in the evolution of family conflicts, with maternal substances within the uterus or eggs as main factors modulating later expression of offspring solicitation behaviors. Yet, parent-offspring conflict theory predicts that offspring might also rely on alternative cues to adjust demand in response to prenatal cues of parental capacity for resource provisioning. Here, we show how embryonic experience with vocalizations carried out by parents during nest-relief displays at incubation adaptively shapes avian offspring development,

Relating parental stress with sleep disorders in parents and children.

OBJECTIVE: To assess whether child sleep disorders positively correlate with parental insomnia, hypersomnia, and sleep apnea, and whether parental and child sleep disorders simultaneously positively associate with parental stress. Potential modifying influences of these associations by age, sex, and marital status will be considered. METHODS: Analyses are based on 14,009 employees aged 18-64 with dependent children (n = 44,157) insured by Deseret Mutual Benefit Administrator (DMBA) in 2020. Rate ratios are adjusted for age, sex, and marital status. RESULTS: The rate of parental stress is 3.0

Parenting styles and dimensions in parents of children with developmental disabilities.

Parenting influences child development. There is limited research, however, related to parenting children who have developmental disabilities. The aims of this study were to: (1) describe the parenting styles and dimensions of parents of children with developmental disabilities and (2) assess differences in parenting styles and dimensions among parents of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), Down syndrome (DS), and spina bifida (SB). Secondary data analysis was conducted from a nationwide cross-sectional study of 496 parents of children aged 5-16 years with ASD (n = 180), DS (n = 156)

Parental leave in medical school: supporting students as parents.

CONTEXT: The overlap between medical school, residency, and childbearing potential increases the likelihood a woman will pursue parenthood within her, or her partner's, medical training. Parental leave benefits mothers, fathers, and infants. Adequate parental leave promotes physical recovery, mental health, infant bonding, improved breastfeeding, appropriate childhood immunization, and familial engagement. Despite the risks and benefits, the United States does not have national paid maternity, paternity, or parental leave requirements. Complicating matters for medical trainees, parental leave

Parental childhood maltreatment and the later-life relationship with parents.

The aims of the current study were to examine the long-term effects of childhood maltreatment on current relationships with parents and whether the quality of current relationships with parents mediates the associations between childhood maltreatment and psychological health in late adulthood. Using 2 decades of longitudinal data from the Wisconsin Longitudinal Study, multilevel structural equation modeling was employed to examine the associations between reports of childhood maltreatment, aspects of current relationships with parents (i.e., perceived closeness, contact frequency, and exchange

Impact of parenting resources on breastfeeding, parenting confidence and relationships.

OBJECTIVE: Pregnancy and the postnatal period offers an opportunity to optimise maternal health. A UK-based charity has developed parenting resources - Baby Buddy smartphone app, Baby Express magazine, and 'From Bump to Breastfeeding' DVD - designed to complement health service care to promote maternal wellbeing, breastfeeding and positive parenting. We evaluated the embedding of these resources into maternity and early years care pathways at three sites in the north of England. Here we present results relating to the impact of the resources on breastfeeding, women's parenting confidence, and

Parenting interventions in tic disorders: an exploration of parents' perspectives.

BACKGROUND: Parents of children with tic disorders (e.g. Tourette syndrome) experience multiple challenges and stresses, which can impact on family functioning, children's well-being and could indirectly affect tic severity. Parenting interventions have been recommended for tic disorder populations; however, little is known about parents' views. METHOD: The views of parents of children with tic disorders were sought. Using Q-methodology, 23 parents provided their opinions regarding the acceptability, effectiveness, feasibility and utility of parenting interventions. RESULTS: Four factors eme

The parental overprotection scale: associations with child and parental anxiety.

BACKGROUND: Parental overprotection has commonly been implicated in the development and maintenance of childhood anxiety disorders. Overprotection has been assessed using questionnaire and observational methods interchangeably; however, the extent to which these methods access the same construct has received little attention. Edwards et al. (2008, 2010) developed a promising parent-report measure of overprotection (OP) and reported that, with parents of pre-school children, the measure correlated with observational assessments and predicted changes in child anxiety symptoms. We aimed to valida

A difficult parent: when parent-child attachment is fragile.

Mrs. Forrest brought Jackie, her 11-year-old adopted daughter, to her pediatrician with a range of concerns, including problems with attention, school performance, anxiety, and frequent oppositional behaviors. Jackie was removed from school because of her mother's concern that the "school was not doing enough" to help Jackie. School reports were not available at this visit. Her mother reported going to great lengths to seek help for Jackie, including individual and family therapy, a psychological evaluation, academic tutoring, and a variety of home-school curricula. She planned to enroll Jacki

[Parental presence and parental coaching in non-violent resistance].

Parental Presence (PP) and Non-violent Resistance (NVR) are the core concepts to describe an approach in counselling helpless parents of children with behavioral disorders. Basically PP means the presence of the parents in the life of their child. It can get lost when escalating conflicts so much become part of the everyday life of the family that these processes can't be handled constructively any more. The escalation then follows either a pattern of complementarity--the readiness of the parents to easily give in, or a symmetric pattern of increasing mutual hostility. Parents then often withd

Coping with parental loss because of termination of parental rights.

This article addresses the process by which children and adolescents cope with severe acute stress of parental loss from causes other than divorce or death. Participants were 60 children and adolescents from a residential treatment facility. Most had experienced neglect, physical abuse, and sexual abuse, and their parents had their parential rights terminated. Measures of symptomatology indicated that children reported low levels of depressive symptoms, whereas caregivers reported the children were experiencing significant psychological problems. Children used avoidant coping strategies more o

Parenting a child with cancer: promotion and prevention-focused parenting.

Applying regulatory focus theory (RFT), it was predicted that, among survivors of childhood cancer, quality of life (QoL) may be compromised by prevention-focused parenting (the focus on avoiding negative outcomes), rather than promotion-focused parenting (the focus on approaching positive outcomes). Interviews with mothers of survivors of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL) and tumours of the Central Nervous System (CNS) were coded for reports of parenting and related to child QoL. Parents reported overall more promotion than prevention; however, mothers of children with tumours of the CNS re

Influence of parental beliefs on parental support for young athletes.

INTRODUCTION: Parental influence is a central element in sport development. Therefore, parental beliefs and attitudes toward sport may influence the support provided to enhance the sport development of sons and daughters. OBJECTIVE: The present study analyzed the relationship between parental beliefs and the support provided by parents to young athletes. Before this analysis, validity evidence was examined for the instruments used in the study. METHOD: A non-probability sample of 505 adolescents and young adults from eastern Mexico City was included, with a mean age of 20.6 years (SD = 2.85)

Gritty Parenting: The Development and Validation of the Parental Grit Scale.

In this study, we aimed to expand the domain specificity of grit by exploring it in the realm of parenting. Parental grit was defined as parents' inclination to demonstrate perseverance, sustained passion, and adaptability in pursuing long-term parenting goals. With longitudinal data from 1,373 U.S. parents, we developed and validated the Parental Grit Scale (PGS) in three phases: item development and revision, establishment of factor structure, and examination of criterion-related and incremental validity. The PGS exhibited a three-factor structure and (partial) scalar measurement invariance

Parenting stress in parents of children with developmental coordination disorder.

BACKGROUND: Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder which affects around 5% of children but is often not detected by clinicians. AIMS: The aim of the current study was to investigate whether parents of children with DCD report clinically-significant levels of parenting stress, and to assess a number of factors contributing to this stress, based on evidence from research into other neurodevelopmental disorders. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: A survey was completed by 174 parents of children aged 5-12 years with DCD (parents age M = 42;3, SD = 4;11), comprising meas

The children of preterm survivors: shyness, parenting, and parental stress.

Extremely low birth weight (ELBW) survivors have higher rates of shyness, a risk factor for poorer outcomes across the life span. Due to advances in fetal and neonatal medicine, the first generation of ELBW survivors have survived to adulthood and become parents. However, no studies have investigated the transmission of their stress vulnerability to their offspring. We explored this phenomenon using a population-based cohort of ELBW survivors and normal birth weight (NBW) controls. Using data from three generations, we examined whether the shyness and parenting stress of ELBW and NBW participa

Parental awareness of testicular torsion amongst Irish parents.

PURPOSE: Testicular torsion is the most concerning underlying cause of acute scrotal pain that can lead to loss of the affected testicle. Whether a torted testicle can be salvaged surgically is directly affected by prompt presentation and diagnosis. This study aims to evaluate the awareness of testicular torsion amongst Irish parents and evaluate their response to a potential torsion. METHODS: An anonymous questionnaire was distributed to parents attending general paediatric clinics and an acute paediatric unit in two paediatric tertiary referral centres. Parenting in emerging adulthood: an examination of parenting clusters and correlates.

The changing nature of the transition to adulthood in western societies, such as the United States, may be extending the length of time parents are engaged in "parenting" activities. However, little is known about different approaches parents take in their interactions with their emerging-adult children. Hence, this study attempted to identify different clusters of parents based on the extent to which they exhibited both extremes of control (psychological control, punishment, verbal hostility, indulgence) and responsiveness (knowledge, warmth, induction, autonomy granting), and to examine how
