Clinical Evaluation of Nonsyndromic Scaphocephaly Surgically Corrected by Floating Bilateral Parietal Bone Flaps Technique Between 2001 and 2021, A Retrospective Study.

BACKGROUND: Scaphocephaly is a common cranial deformity characterized by a long, narrow head, frontal bossing, and a sharp, prominent occiput. These features can affect brain integrity and potentially lead to neurological impairment. Various techniques for correcting sagittal synostosis have been described, each with its own advantages and challenges. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of floating bilateral parietal bone flaps in improving head shape in patients with scaphocephaly. METHODS: This study examined patients with nonsyndromic sagittal synostosis who underwent surgery using t

A Rare Clinical Presentation of Multifocal Tuberculous Osteomyelitis of the Right Parietal and Left Calcaneal Bones in an 11-Year-Old Male: A Case Report.

Paediatric multifocal tuberculous osteomyelitis is a rare and severe clinical entity of extrapulmonary tuberculosis. Globally, Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) is the most common cause of necrotising granulomatous inflammation. The diverse clinical presentations of multifocal osteoarticular tuberculosis and its paucibacillary characteristic pose a diagnostic challenge in children. We present the case of an 11-year-old male with painless right scalp swelling and painful left foot swelling, associated with intermittent fever. Clinical exam revealed a discharging sinus in the right parietal regio

Mice lacking the conserved transcription factor Grainyhead-like 3 (Grhl3) display increased apposition of the frontal and parietal bones during embryonic development.

BACKGROUND: Increased apposition of the frontal and parietal bones of the skull during embryogenesis may be a risk factor for the subsequent development of premature skull fusion, or craniosynostosis. Human craniosynostosis is a prevalent, and often serious embryological and neonatal pathology. Other than known mutations in a small number of contributing genes, the aetiology of craniosynostosis is largely unknown. Therefore, the identification of novel genes which contribute to normal skull patterning, morphology and premature suture apposition is imperative, in order to fully understand the g

Clinical importance of the relationship between parietal foramen variations and the sagittal suture.

This study aims to determine the prevalence, number, and localization of the parietal foramen in relation to the sagittal suture. Forty skulls (80 parietal bones), whose age and sex were unknown, from the Department of Anatomy, Faculty of Medicine, Cukurova University, were studied. Morphometric measurements were performed using a digital caliper. The presence of the parietal foramen and its number, localization, and distance from the sagittal suture were evaluated in this study. SPSS v.20 software was used for statistical analysis. In addition to descriptive statistical methods, the Mann-Whit

In vivo stimulation of bone formation by transforming growth factor-beta.

The effect of transforming growth factor-beta (TGF beta) on bone in vivo was examined. Twelve daily injections of 1 microgram TGF beta directly onto the periostea of parietal bones of neonatal rats stimulated the formation of periosteal woven bone. The thickness of the treated parietal bones increased at least 2-fold in a dose-dependent manner. This TGF beta effect was localized at the sites of injection, and no change was observed in contralateral parietal bones and tibiae. The body weight in these growing rats was not affected by TGF beta 1. TGF beta 2 had effects similar to those of TGF bet

[A case of diploic epidermoid invading intradurally, which was diagnosed by MR diffusion-weighted image].

A case of diploic epidermoid in the right parietal bone was presented. A 66-year-old male was admitted to our hospital because of aphasia. Plain skull radiogram showed an osteolytic lesion in the right parietal bone. Computed tomography revealed a mass with destruction of the parietal bone extending from an inner to an outer table. The mass was shown by MR imaging as hypointensity on the T1-weighted image and as hyperintensity on the T2-weighted image. The hyperintensity became more remarkable by using a diffusion technique. Based on these findings, a preoperative diagnosis of right parietal e

An enlarged parietal foramen in the late archaic Xujiayao 11 neurocranium from Northern China, and rare anomalies among Pleistocene Homo.

We report here a neurocranial abnormality previously undescribed in Pleistocene human fossils, an enlarged parietal foramen (EPF) in the early Late Pleistocene Xujiayao 11 parietal bones from the Xujiayao (Houjiayao) site, northern China. Xujiayao 11 is a pair of partial posteromedial parietal bones from an adult. It exhibits thick cranial vault bones, arachnoid granulations, a deviated posterior sagittal suture, and a unilateral (right) parietal lacuna with a posteriorly-directed and enlarged endocranial vascular sulcus. Differential diagnosis indicates that the perforation is a congenital de

Delayed membranous cranial ossification in a mother and child.

We report on a girl and her mother with delayed intramembranous ossification of the cranial vault. The 11-month-old girl had a large ossification defect involving parietal bones, squamous portion of temporal bones, and interparietal region of occipital bone, while the mother showed a complete ossified cranial vault with flat posterior parietal region and prominent occiput. Both had a similar face characterized by frontal bossing, hypertelorism, downward slant of palpebral fissures, flat nasal bridge, and short midface. On reviewing the literature, we concluded that these cases may be a dominan

Os parietale divisum.

Divisions of the parietal bone are extraordinarily rare, and have been described previously only in skull specimens in the anatomical literature. We report a case of os parietale divisum (divided parietal bone) in an infant with plagiocephaly. A 36-weeks gestation male with multiple congenital anomalies presented to the deformational plagiocephaly clinic at 11 weeks of age. CT imaging demonstrated a suture dividing the left parietal bone into two segments. He had a plagiocephalic appearance, with the greater occipital and parietal protuberances ipsilateral to the abnormal left parietal suture,

Mechanical properties of fused sagittal sutures in scaphocephaly.

BACKGROUND: Craniosynostosis in newborns is caused by the premature closure of the cranial sutures leading to cranial vault deformity. It results in aesthetic imbalance and developmental disabilities and surgery is frequent during the first months of growth. Our study focused on scaphocephaly defined as the premature closure of the sagittal suture. We hypothesised that the effective mechanical properties of sutures were altered as compared to those of the parietal adjacent tissue considered as control. METHODS: The population consisted of seven males and four females (mean age 4.9 months). Si

Are bone erosion and peripheral feeding vessels hallmarks of intracranial solitary fibrous tumor/hemangiopericytoma?

An 86-year-old man sustained progressive motor weakness in the left lower extremity for 1 month. Cranial computed tomography (CT) revealed an isodense mass in the right parietal lobe, with a smooth-contoured focal erosion in the adjacent parietal bone. The extra-axial tumor appeared isointense on T1- and hyperintense on T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging with intense enhancement. On three-dimensional CT angiography, the ectatic left occipital artery coursed into the right parietal foramina and connected with a dilated meningeal vessel supplying the tumor. The focal erosion formed in the in

[A large AVM extensively involving the parietal region and posterior fossa].

A 47-year-old male was concerned with a large AVM involved extensively in the parietal region and the posterior fossa. Radiological examinations showed multiple radiolucencies in the parietal and occipital bone and torturous vascular nets (nidus) in those bones on the angiograms. Nidus was found also in the dura mater in the posterior fossa. Therefore, this case seemed to be an extremely rare case of calvarial AVM in the parietal region with the mixed calvarial dural AVM in the posterior fossa. His symptoms were bruit, transient hemiparesis and Gerstmann's syndrome in addition to the symptoms

[Skull fracture and cephalhematoma in a newborn--a case report].

Skull fractures and cephalhematoma in newborns belong to the group of birth injuries of the head and neck, accounting for 11.4 to 15% of the total number of birth injuries. We presented a fracture of the parietal bones in a newborn, associated with parietal cephalhematoma. The newborn had transient and mild neurological symptoms: vomiting and changes in muscle tone. Clinical examination confirmed a positive "ping-pong" phenomen, craniogram confirmed the fracture of parietal bones and shown cephalhematoma, as well as ultrasound (US) examinations of the brain showed peri-interventricular bleedin

Cerebral mycetoma with cranial osteomyelitis.

Craniocerebral maduromycetoma is extremely rare. The authors describe a case of maduromycetoma involving the left parietal cortex, bone, and subcutaneous tissue in a young male farm laborer who presented with left parietal scalp swelling that had progressed into a relentlessly discharging sinus. Computed tomography (CT) scanning of his brain revealed osteomyelitis of the parietal bone with an underlying homogeneously enhancing tumor. Intraoperatively, the mass was revealed to be a black lesion involving the bone, dura mater, and underlying cerebral cortex. It was friable and separated from the
