Stubborn Swellings: A Rare Case of Kimura's Disease Presenting as Parotid Swellings.

Kimura disease (KD) is a rare chronic inflammatory disorder characterized by the development of painless subcutaneous nodules, predominantly in the head and neck region. Diagnosis relies on a high index of clinical suspicion and clinicopathological correlation, with core biopsy serving as the gold standard for a definitive diagnosis. While the disease itself is benign, it can cause significant morbidity if left untreated. This case report describes a 48-year-old male who presented with bilateral infraauricular swellings, pruritus, and elevated serum IgE levels along with eosinophilia. Imaging

Unicentric Castleman's disease in the parotid gland associated with psoriasis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Castleman's disease is a rare lymphoproliferative disorder that is often misdiagnosed because of its untypical clinical or imaging features except for a painless mass. Besides, it is also difficult to cure Castleman's disease due to its unclear pathogenesis. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a Castleman's disease case with diagnostic significance regarding a 54-year-old Chinese male who has a painless mass in his left parotid gland for 18 months with a 30-years history of autoimmune disease psoriasis. Computed tomography scan showed a high-density nodule with clear boundaries in the l

[Kimura's disease mimicking primary neoplasm of the parotid gland: A case report].

BACKGROUND: Kimura's disease is an infrequent inflammatory disorder, of unknown etiology, with few reports outside of Asia. It presents as a nodule or tumor predominantly in the postauricular region, neck and parotid gland. It is histologically characterized by follicular hyperplasia with wellformed mantle zones, preservation of nodal architecture, prominent eosinophilic infiltrate in the germinal centers and interfollicular areas; and associated with elevated levels of IgE and peripheral eosinophilia. CLINICAL CASE: We present a case of a 23-year-old man from Mexico, he presented with a recu

Reduced MIBG accumulation of the parotid and submandibular glands in idiopathic Parkinson's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Alpha-synuclein pathology (ASP) is a characteristic histopathological finding in idiopathic Parkinson's disease (PD). The ASP involves not only the brain but also extracranial structures. In the present study we utilized MIBG scintigraphy to measure the sympathetic innervation of the major salivary glands. We were interested in whether MIBG uptake in the major salivary glands represents a potential biomarker for ASP in PD. METHODS: We investigated 77 PD patients (age 61 ± 10 years, mean ± SD), while 15 non-PD patients (age 58 ± 15 years) with arterial hypertension, who underwent

Extraspinal sciatica revealing late metastatic disease from parotid carcinoma.

Sciatica is a clinical symptom usually caused by a disk herniation and less often by other conditions such as tumors, infections, or inflammatory diseases. We report the case of a woman in whom sciatica led to the identification of a large pelvic metastasis from a carcinoma of the parotid gland.

[Parotid involvement in cat scratch disease: a differential diagnosis with increased significance].

BACKGROUND: Bartonella henselae is the causative agent of cat-scratch disease (CSD), an inflammatory infection of the lymph nodes. So far, only few cases of atypical manifestations in the head and neck, especially manifestations in the parotid gland have been reported. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between January 1997 and June 1999 seven patients with manifestations of CSD in the parotid gland were observed at the ENT-department Freiburg. The positive diagnosis was confirmed serologically by an indirect immunofluorescence assay and by detection of Bartonella henselae-DNA with PCR-amplification and s

Contrast-Enhanced Ultrasound in the Diagnosis of Parotid Gland Castleman Disease in a Child.

Castleman disease is a rare lymphoproliferative disorder that infrequently involves the parotid gland. We report a 16-year-old girl with a 3-year history of slowly progressive, painless right cheek swelling. CT and MRI showed an avidly enhancing, markedly T2-hyperintense parotid lesion, suggesting a vascular malformation; fine-needle aspiration yielded reactive lymphoid tissue. Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) demonstrated rapid, intense, homogeneous enhancement, confirming a hypervascular solid mass rather than a vascular malformation and raising suspicion for Castleman disease. Superficia

Increased parotid microvascularity without stiffness differences in children with celiac disease.

BACKGROUND: Celiac disease is a systemic autoimmune disorder that can affect salivary glands, yet subclinical involvement in children is under-investigated. Conventional ultrasound often lacks sensitivity for detecting early inflammatory or subtle microvascular changes in asymptomatic patients. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to evaluate subclinical parotid gland involvement in children with celiac disease using microvascular imaging and shear wave elastography (SWE), hypothesizing that these tools could detect early parenchymal and microcirculatory alterations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective,

Polycystic Disease of the Salivary Glands: A Rare Cause of Bilateral Parotid Enlargement.

Non-neoplastic cysts are rare, causing salivary gland enlargement. Among these, one of the rarest entities is dysgenetic polycystic disease (DPD) of the salivary glands. Also referred to simply as polycystic disease, DPD is a rare developmental anomaly of the salivary gland ductal system, characterized by distinctive histopathological features. It is an uncommon cause of parotid gland enlargement, with only 22 cases documented in the literature to date. We present a case of DPD in a female patient who exhibited bilateral enlargement of the parotid glands. The diagnosis was confirmed using magn

Hydatid cyst in the parotid gland, a rare localization of the disease: A case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Hydatid cysts are often found in the liver or lungs. As for the parotid localization, it remains exceptional even in endemic areas and presents as a tumor of the parotid thus representing a challenge to the practitioner. CASE PRESENTATION: A 54-year-old male farmer presented with a swelling in the left parotid gland region evolving over the past 2 years. Physical examination revealed a non-tender and mobile swelling in the left parotid region, the overlying skin was normal. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a cystic lesion of the left parotid gland. Kimura's disease of the parotid gland with cutaneous features in a Caucasian female patient.

Kimura's disease is a rare disease of unknown aetiology, commonly presenting with slow-growing head and neck subcutaneous nodules, lymphadenopathy, eosinophilia and elevated immunoglobulin E. This report describes a very rare case of a 41-year-old female, of White-British ethnicity, with a new diagnosis of Kimura's disease of the parotid gland and associated cutaneous features. The patient was investigated for 3 years before a diagnosis of Kimura's disease was reached. A superficial parotidectomy was undertaken and no recurrence was observed in the 20 months following surgery. Kimura's disease

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma presenting as a large cyst of the parotid gland in HIV disease.

Cystic lesions of the parotid gland may be the presenting symptom in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive patients. The most common lesion is the benign lymphoepithelial cyst. Malignant lesions may also be associated with-or be hidden by-a cystic mass. We report a case of mucoepidermoid carcinoma in a 40-year-old HIV-positive woman who presented with a large cystic mass of the parotid that had been previously misdiagnosed as benign on several fine-needle aspiration biopsies. On our histologic examination, the true pathologic nature of the lesion was revealed. We suggest that an image-gu

Dysgenetic polycystic disease of the parotid gland: Report of a case and review of the literature.

Dysgenetic polycystic disease (DPD) is a rare cystic lesion affecting mainly the parotid salivary glands with only 14 reported cases in English literature. DPD of parotids is more common in females, common in younger age group, mostly bilateral in occurrence and commonly affects the superficial lobe. Surgery is performed for symptomatic relief and cosmosis. We report a case of a unilateral DPD of the parotid gland with distinctive histopathology. Patient was treated by performing total parotidectomy with preservation of the facial nerve.
