The parotid gland may be affected by numerous pathologies, and physicians from many different medical and surgical specialties request parotid imaging. Mastering the typical imaging features of various types of parotid pathology is facilitated by understanding how various diseases produce their characteristic imaging findings. In this review article, we present succinct overviews of the normal anatomy and the common pathologies of the parotid gland and recommend a practical approach to differential diagnosis that can be easily implemented in day-to-day radiology practice.

Penetrating trauma to the parotid gland may present unique challenges especially when Stensen duct, neurovascular structures, and/or collateral organs are involved. Especially ballistic injuries caused by high-velocity projectiles or fragments of grenades and improvised explosive devices are often associated with massive tissue damage and a high risk of infections and other posttraumatic complications. Because penetrating parotid trauma is not very common, only limited information on the primary treatment of such injuries is available. This article gives a short overview about actual aspects o…

Hamartomas of the parotid gland are highly unusual. We present a case of a vascular hamartoma of the parotid gland arising as a 1.5 cm mass in a 5-year-old girl. As far as we are aware, no other case with the same features has been reported. We present this case to generate greater consideration of hamartomas as part of the differential diagnosis of parotid lesions, and to reflect over the criteria used to identify a hamartoma from other parotid lesions, as there appears to be some confusion in the literature.

Oncocytomas are rare tumors in the head and neck region. They occur commonly in salivary glands, especially in parotid glands. The prevalence is 0.5% to 1.2% in parotideal neoplasms. Oncocytomas rarely occur bilaterally. To our knowledge, only 20 cases were reported in the literature. A case with bilateral oncocytoma was presented with clinical, radiologic, and pathologic findings and treatment options in this study.

Kimura disease (KD) is a rare entity that occurs primarily in Asian people characterized histopathologically by a lymph-folliculoid granuloma with infiltration of the mass and the surrounding tissues by eosinophils, often with concomitant peripheral blood eosinophilia and elevated serum immunoglobulin E, generally seen in the head and neck region, especially preauricular area. In this article, we present the case of a 14-year-old male patient with KD on his left parotid area. The clinical, radiologic, surgical, and pathologic findings of KD are discussed in this article.

Sebaceous lymphadenoma is a rare benign salivary gland tumor of uncertain histogenesis. We report such a case in a 37-year-old female presenting with a parotid swelling. Recognition of key histological features will readily allow differentiation of this neoplasm from its benign and malignant mimics. The prognosis is excellent following excision.

Carcinosarcoma is a rare malignant 'mixed' tumour in the head and neck region. We present a case of carcinosarcoma in a long standing parotid lump and share our experience in the management of the disease together with a review of recent English literature on the subject.

An 81-year-old male patient presented at our department with a large (diameter 10 cm), exophytic lesion in the right parotid region. Magnetic resonance imaging showed the tumor to derive from the lateral part of the parotid gland. We performed complete tumor resection with selective ipsilateral neck dissection. The facial nerve could be preserved. The postoperative course was uneventful. Histopathologic and immunohistochemical examinations revealed a malignant fibrous histiocytoma. We present the diagnostic and therapeutic options of this unusual malignancy of the parotid gland.

UNLABELLED: Juvenile xanthogranuloma (JXG) is a cutaneous non-Langerhans cell histiocytosis affecting infants. We report the first case of JXG in the parotid gland of an adult.
CLINICAL CASE: A 52 year-old man consulted for a painful swelling of the left parotid region, progressively increasing. On physical examination, the mass was 4 cm in diameter. A second 1.5 cm diameter tumor was found in the right parotid region. MRI revealed masses with heterogeneous hypodense on T1-weighted images and with hyper dense on T2 weighted images associated with heterogeneous enhancement after gadolinium inj…

OBJECTIVES: To highlight the first reported case of necrobiotic xanthogranuloma of the parotid gland. We also review the clinical presentations and treatments for this rare condition.
METHOD: Case report and review of necrobiotic xanthogranuloma.
RESULTS: A 48-year-old man presented with a right parotid mass. Fine needle aspiration cytology was suggestive of Warthin's tumour, for which the patient underwent a subtotal parotidectomy. The final histopathological diagnosis was necrobiotic xanthogranuloma.
CONCLUSIONS: Necrobiotic xanthogranuloma may clinically mimic commoner tumours such as Wa…

The tumors of the salivary glands are infrequent in children, and parotid gland is involved in 80% of them. When a salivary gland tumor is present, the chance of malignancy is greater in the child than in the adult. We reviewed 8 cases identified in patients aged 14 years and younger in our hospital, analyzing its antecedents, signs and symptoms, histological features, diagnosis, treatment and evolution. All the patients displayed preauricular painless, non-inflammatory and slow-growing masses to an age between 10 months and 14 years. Four or them were pleomorphic adenomas, two haemangiomas, o…

INTRODUCTION: Alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma of salivary glands is a rare malignant neoplasm, presenting a striated muscular differentiation. It is typically observed in children, adolescents, and young adults but can sometimes be diagnosed in older people.
OBSERVATION: We report the case of a 57 year-old man presenting with a primary alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma of the parotid gland. The patient was treated by surgery and radiotherapy.
DISCUSSION: According to literature data, alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma of the parotid gland is exceptionally described after 40 years of age. In that case it has the wo…
