Salivary gland tumours present a pleomorphic and complex morphology and, apart from the most common neoplasms with well-established histopathological criteria, may create diagnostic difficulty for histopathologists. The majority of salivary gland tumours occur in the parotid gland and the use of ultrasound guided parotid biopsy (US-PB) has increased. US-PB in contrast with fine needle aspiration (FNA), which is an easy and relatively painless technique, is performed under local anaesthesia, usually by radiologists. US-PB offers some advantages over the FNA such as tumour grading and the possib

ObjectiveParotid gland neoplasms account for a large proportion of benign salivary gland tumors, with pleomorphic adenomas (PA) being the most common in the civilian population, followed by Warthin's tumor (WT). However, the distinct risk profiles of Veterans significantly influence the incidence and prevalence of salivary gland neoplasms. We investigated the diagnostic and management algorithms for benign parotid gland neoplasms in Veterans.MethodsRetrospective cohort study. Descriptive statistics were calculated using Microsoft Excel. Categorical variables were compared using chi square test

Long-term tumour recurrence rates and complications of endoscope-assisted partial superficial parotidectomy (PSP) are rarely reported compared to traditional open approaches. This retrospective study included 306 patients with superficial parotid benign neoplasms who were divided into an endoscopy group (endoscope-assisted PSP, n = 102) and a control group (conventional PSP, n = 204). There were no significant differences in clinical and pathological characteristics between the two groups, except age (P = 0.001). Three patients had confirmed recurrence during a mean follow-up duration of 125.1

BACKGROUND: The recently described Milan system provides a unified way of categorizing salivary gland fine-needle aspiration (FNA) cytology. We aim to use this system to stratify risk of malignancy in parotid FNAs.
METHODS: In this retrospective case series, 376 FNAs were preoperatively performed for 573 parotidectomies over 14 years.
RESULTS: Risk of malignancy on FNA is as follows: nondiagnostic 14.5%, non-neoplastic 26.7%, atypia of undetermined significance 29.3%, benign neoplasm 2.7%, neoplasm of uncertain malignant potential 19.1%, suspicious for malignancy 87.5%, and malignant 100%. T

The present paper considers some of the problems linked to the surgical treatment of parotid metastases. The authors base these considerations on their limited personal cases and on the most accredited literature. In the presence of cutaneous malignancies of the upper portion of the face, accurate clinical-radiological evaluation must be made of the parotid and neck region. Elective parotidectomy is performed when the cutaneous carcinoma is quite extensive or located in proximity of the gland or when the case involves a melanoma. Depending on the oncological margins, a sub-total parotidectomy

Malignancies of the parotid gland are relatively uncommon and in most cases are primary neoplasms; intraparotid metastases are rare. Oral and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (O- and OP-SCC) can potentially metastasize to the parotid gland or intraparotid lymph nodes. Fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) serves as the initial diagnostic approach for this purpose. HPV status in FNAC specimens is relevant and can guide the diagnostic workup, indicating a potential oropharyngeal origin of the primary tumor. A small series of occult SCC metastases is presented below, in which HPV-DNA testin

Infarction has rarely been reported in some types of salivary gland tumors. In this study, we present the first case of infarction occurring in salivary basal cell adenoma. A 62-year-old male presented with swelling in the left parotid region. Histopathological examination revealed extensive central necrosis surrounded by a rim of viable tumor tissue showing the typical histology of basal cell adenoma. Nuclear β-catenin expression and the CTNNB1 p.I35T (c.104 T > C) mutation were identified in the tumor. A diagnosis of basal cell adenoma with central necrosis was made, and the postoperative pe

Multiple dermal cylindromas and membranous basal cell adenoma of parotid gland in a 67-year-old woman with Brooke-Spiegler syndrome (BSS) were examined by fine-needle cytology. Histology, immunochemistry, and CYLD germline mutation testing were also performed. Cytomorphology and immunochemistry of the two lesions showed basaloid neoplasms, remarkably similar, composed by proliferating epithelial cells of basal type accompanied by a smaller proportion of myoepithelial cells. CYLD gene showed a novel germline splice acceptor site mutation (c.2042-1G>C) with skipping of the entire exon 15. The oc

Membranous basal cell adenoma (MBCA) is a rare benign salivary gland neoplasm. It is difficult to diagnose MBCA based on fine-needle aspiration (FNA) cytology due to rare reporting of its FNA cytology and overlapping of its FNA cytologic features with some benign and malignant entities. We present a case of MBCA in a 67-year-old female that was originally misinterpreted as adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) on FNA cytology. The FNA smears showed numerous uniform small basaloid epithelial cells with round or oval nuclei and inconspicuous nucleoli, and scant cytoplasm. The basaloid cells surround ac

A 34-year-old Japanese man presented with an indolent nodule on the right flank. Computed tomography of the chest and abdomen demonstrated a large nodule measuring 55 mm × 50 mm in the abdominal oblique muscle layer of the right flank, and several small nodules were seen in the muscle layer throughout the body and subcutaneous tissue of the lower abdomen. 18 F-fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography/computed tomography revealed nodular lesions in the bilateral parotid glands, bilateral cervical lymph nodes and lower lobe of the right lung. Intermittently, ground-glass shadows developed

We present the case of a young 38-year-old woman with metastatic progressive pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasm (NEN) exhibiting an unusual metastasis to the parotid gland. After previous treatments, including radionuclide therapy with the somatostatin-receptor agonist DOTATOC and parotid metastasectomy, failed, she was referred to TANDEM peptide receptor radionuclide therapy (PRRT) using the somatostatin-receptor antagonist DOTA-LM3 labeled with Actinium-225 and Lutetium-177. Following 2 cycles of TANDEM-PRRT, she achieved partial remission in all metastatic sites, notably in the parotid glan

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC), clear cell type, is a commonly encountered metastatic tumor that can present at unusual anatomic sites many years after the primary tumor resection. Noncutaneous metastasis to the parotid gland is unusual; however, a number of cases of parotid RCC metastasis have been reported. Fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) is regularly utilized during the evaluation of salivary gland lesions, where it has a high sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy; however, the identification and definitive diagnosis of primary and metastatic clear cell neoplasms is a potential diagnostic

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a rare fibroblastic tumor with spindle cell morphology, which is characterized by a prominent branching vasculature and a NAB2-STAT6 gene rearrangement. SFT may occur in any anatomical site and may involve salivary glands, including the parotid gland. We present a young female with a primary parotid SFT diagnosed as "neoplasm-Salivary gland neoplasm of uncertain malignant potential (SUMP)" per the Milan system for reporting salivary gland cytopathology by fine-needle aspiration (FNA) with surgical pathology follow-up. Cytomorphology of SFT is diverse and overlap

Oncocytic neoplasms are a group of rare tumours that mostly affect the parotid gland (80%), sometimes affect the submandibular gland (9%) and rarely affect the intraoral minor salivary glands. The incidence of oncocytic neoplasms represents approximately 1% of parotid neoplasms and bilateral presentation is very rare. Herein we describe a single case involving bilateral presentation of oncocytoma of the parotid glands.

Synchronous parotid neoplasms, especially synchronous neoplasms of two separate and histologically different types, are extremely uncommon. A review of the literature revealed that most reported cases were either a combination of two distinct benign neoplasms or a benign neoplasm and another malignant tumor. To the best of our knowledge, there has been no report of synchronous unilateral double primary carcinomas of the parotid gland. Here we report a 39-year-old woman who exhibited basal cell adenocarcinoma and mucoepidermoid carcinoma simultaneously in the left parotid gland.

Documentation of metastatic lesions in the parotid gland diagnosed by fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is limited in the cytopathology literature. The metastases within the parotid masquerades clinically as primary neoplasm of parotid. The authors of present case report intent to highlight the importance of FNAC in the diagnosis of metastases in parotid. These diagnoses enable the search for the locations of unknown primaries. The nodules within the parotid masquerading as primary neoplasm have undergone FNAC in five cases. The cytomorphological interpretation of the smears was performed
