Musical Hallucinations Induced by Conventional Doses of Paroxetine.

BACKGROUND A musical hallucination (MH) is a type of auditory hallucination, and is defined as hearing music, sounds, or songs in the absence of external auditory stimuli. There are several case reports of conventional doses of tri- or tetracyclic antidepressants inducing MHs, but no such report for selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. Here we report a case of a patient with MHs induced by conventional doses of paroxetine. CASE REPORT The patient was a 22-year-old woman with panic disorder (PD) and major depressive disorder (MDD). On the 10th day of treatment with paroxetine 20 mg/d, olanz

Effect of paroxetine on intestinal motility in the presence of ondansetron.

Chemotherapy, radiotherapy, surgery and depression are the conditions that run in parallel fashions. All these conditions cause the release of an increased amount of serotonin in the body. Serotonin acts on these 5HT3 receptors and causes nausea and vomiting. Ondansetron acts by blocking serotonin from acting on the receptors and thus is useful in decreasing episodes of nausea and vomiting but when used concomitantly with SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) as cancer patient also suffered from depression. This combination tends to decrease the efficacy of ondansetron. The present s

Combination of valproate and paroxetine in mice exposed to picrotoxin.

The frequent coexistence of depression in epileptic patients raises the issue of simultaneous use of antidepressants along with antiepileptic drugs in the management of such cases. However, it is necessary to evaluate the safety of these antiepileptic/antidepressant drug combinations. The present study investigates the effect of the antidepressant paroxetine (a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) administered alone or in combination with the antiepileptic drug sodium valproate on chemoconvulsions induced by picrotoxin (PTX). Seizure score was recorded in vivo, and the levels of thiobarbitu

The effects of paroxetine on rat isolated vas deferens.

The aim of the present study is to evaluate whether paroxetine (a selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor) can modify the contractile responses of isolated vas deferens. Some contractile agents, potassium chloride (KCl), adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP), noradrenaline (NA), and electrical field stimulation (EFS) caused contractions both in epididymal and prostatic portions of vas deferens. Paroxetine (PX) in concentrations 10(-7) and 10(-6)M potentiated the contractions to KCl and ATP only in epididymal portion but in higher concentrations (10(-5) and 10(-4)M) inhibited the responses in both po

The effect of paroxetine on Taijinkyofusho: a report of three cases.

Taijinkyofusho is a culture-related syndrome conceptualized in Japan. While previous studies suggest its psychopathological similarities to social phobia and obsessive-compulsive disorder, introspection regarding shame and low self-esteem is particularly linked to Japanese culture. We present three cases of Taijinkyofusho: Cases 1 and 2 show neurotic features while Case 3 shows delusional thoughts. Paroxetine was used for treatment but was productive in only the first two cases. Phobic and obsessive thought patterns were altered in Cases 1 and 2, suggesting that the significant core symptoms w

Paroxetine in child and adolescent outpatients with panic disorder.

Paroxetine has repeatedly been shown to be effective in the treatment of panic disorder (PD) in adults, and, according to previous case observations, it may be useful in treating children and adolescents with PD as well. This preliminary naturalistic study examines effectiveness and safety of paroxetine in the treatment of children and adolescents with PD. A chart review was conducted on 18 patients with Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders PD admitted to the Division of Child Neurology and Psychiatry and to the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Pisa. Clinical experience with paroxetine in social anxiety disorder.

Paroxetine is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) with proven efficacy in the treatment of depression, panic disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Evidence that paroxetine may be effective in social anxiety disorder (social phobia) first arose from open-label studies. More recently, three multicentre, randomized, placebo-controlled trials have been performed, each lasting 12 weeks, to assess the efficacy and tolerability of paroxetine in the treatment of social anxiety disorder, and these studies are reviewed here. The data from all three studies consistently demonstrated tha

Paroxetine in human breast milk and nursing infants.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine the extent of infant medication exposure through breast-feeding during maternal treatment with paroxetine. METHOD: Breast milk and paired maternal and infant sera were collected after 10 days of maternal treatment with paroxetine at a stable daily dose (10-50 mg/day). All samples were analyzed by means of high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection and a limit of detection of 2 ng/ml. RESULTS: Breast milk paroxetine concentrations were highly variable (2-101 ng/ml) and were present in all breast milk samples (N=108).

Compulsive voyeurism and exhibitionism: a clinical response to paroxetine.

The compulsive behaviors seen in sexual paraphilias may be related to those of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Based primarily upon case reports as well as studies indicating the effectiveness of serotonin reuptake inhibitors in the treatment of sexual paraphilias, it has been speculated that sexual paraphilias lie within the obsessive-compulsive spectrum. There have been no reports of the use of paroxetine in the treatment of sexual paraphilias. This is a report of two patients, the first a voyeur and the second an exhibitionist, both of whom responded to treatment with paroxetine. The d

Effect of paroxetine on physiological response to stress and smoking.

OBJECTIVE: Smokers often smoke during stressful events, which leads to large increases in cardiovascular measures such as blood pressure (BP) and heart rate (HR). Because exaggerated cardiovascular response to stress is associated with cardiovascular disease risk, this study examined paroxetine's effect on the physiological response to combining stress and smoking. METHODS: Sixty-two participants completed this randomized, double-blind, crossover study in which BP, HR, plasma epinephrine, norepinephrine, and cortisol concentrations were measured at rest, while smoking, and during a speech and

Co-medication of pravastatin and paroxetine-a categorical study.

Electronic Medical Records (EMRs) are wealthy storehouses of patient information, to which data mining techniques can be prudently applied to reveal clinically significant patterns. Detecting patterns in drug-drug interactions, leading to adverse drug reactions is a powerful application of EMR data mining. Adverse effects of drug treatments can be investigated by mining clinical laboratory tests data which are reliable indicators of abnormal physiological functions. We report here the co-medication effects of pravastatin (HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor) and paroxetine (selective serotonin reuptak

An evaluation of paroxetine in generalised social anxiety disorder.

It is estimated that social anxiety disorder affects approximately 13.3% individuals within the community at some point in their lifetime and is associated with significant functional impairment. A variety of drug groups have demonstrated efficacy in treating social anxiety disorder, including selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Paroxetine is an SSRI approved by the FDA and Health Canada for the treatment of a variety of psychiatric conditions. Paroxetine has been the most studied agent in social anxiety disorder and has been shown to be effective in short-term, fixed- and flexibl

[Priapism caused by simultaneous use of zuclopentixol and paroxetine].

A man aged 32 with psychotic and depressive symptoms was treated with zuclopentixol and paroxetine, following which priapism developed. After puncture of coagulated blood from the corpora cavernosa urine retention developed and a suprapubic catheter had to be introduced temporarily for urine drainage. Zuclopentixol is an alpha 1-receptor blocker and paroxetine inhibits the hepatic enzyme P450-2D6 required for conversion of the two substances. Separately, and especially in combination, these substances cause a disturbance of the drainage from the corpora cavernosa leading to ischaemia and compl

Paroxetine: new indication. In social phobia: minimal assessment.

Social phobia is generally defined as an intense and persistent fear of one or several social situations, with important repercussions for occupational activity or social life. Cognitive psychotherapy and antidepressants have partial efficacy. There is no reference drug therapy. In France, paroxetine is the first drug to be granted a licence for patients with social phobia. Clinical evaluation consists of data from four placebo-controlled trials lasting only 12 to 24 weeks. Treatment with paroxetine was associated with a significant improvement in standard social-phobia scores, although most p

Perinatal outcome following third trimester exposure to paroxetine.

BACKGROUND: Paroxetine hydrochloride is commonly used for maternal depression, panic disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. The drug readily crosses the human placenta. Although it does not appear to increase teratogenic risk, there have been case reports of neonatal withdrawal. Symptoms were described soon after birth and lasted up to 1 month. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether there is a clinically important discontinuation syndrome in neonates exposed to paroxetine in utero. METHODS: Prospective, controlled cohort study. PATIENTS: Fifty-five pregnant women counseled prospectively by

Obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders: effective treatment with paroxetine.

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether, like pure obsessive-compulsive disorder, obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders are treatable with a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). METHOD: Case histories of patients prescribed paroxetine for compulsive collecting, skin-picking, and trichotillomania were reviewed. RESULTS: All patients were successfully treated with paroxetine. CONCLUSIONS: Obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders may share a serotonin-related dysfunction, and SSRIs may prove effective in their treatment.

Pharmacokinetics of immediate and sustained-release formulations of paroxetine: Population pharmacokinetic approach to guide paroxetine personalized therapy in chinese psychotic patients.

Paroxetine is one of the most potent selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) approved for treating depression, panic disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. There is evidence linking genetic polymorphisms and nonlinear metabolism to the Paroxetine's pharmacokinetic (PK) variability. The purpose of the present study was to develop a population PK (PPK) model of paroxetine in Chinese patients, which was used to define the paroxetine's PK parameters and quantify the effect of clinical and baseline demographic factors on these PK characteristics. The study included 184 inpatients with
