Therapeutic Effects of Cornuside on Particulate Matter-Induced Lung Injury.

Particulate matter (PM) is a mixture comprising both organic and inorganic particles, both of which are hazardous to health. The inhalation of airborne PM with a diameter of ≤2.5 μm (PM2.5) can cause considerable lung damage. Cornuside (CN), a natural bisiridoid glucoside derived from the fruit of Cornus officinalis Sieb, exerts protective properties against tissue damage via controlling the immunological response and reducing inflammation. However, information regarding the therapeutic potential of CN in patients with PM2.5-induced lung injury is limited. Thus, herein, we examined the protect

Chemistry and lung toxicity of particulate matter emitted from firearms.

Smoke emissions produced by firearms contain hazardous chemicals, but little is known if their properties change depending on firearm and ammunition type and whether such changes affect toxicity outcomes. Pulmonary toxicity was assessed in mice exposed by oropharyngeal aspiration to six different types of smoke-related particulate matter (PM) samples; (1) handgun PM, (2) rifle PM, (3) copper (Cu) particles (a surrogate for Cu in the rifle PM) with and without the Cu chelator penicillamine, (4) water-soluble components of the rifle PM, (5) soluble components with removal of metal ions, and (6)

Kidney damage induced by sub-chronic fine particulate matter exposure.

According to the WHO, about 3 million people die each year due to ambient air pollution. Most of the in vivo studies on the PM2.5 effects have been done on respiratory and cardiovascular tissues. However, little is known about the effects on the tissues involved on xenobiotic removal, such as kidneys. In the present study we assess the harmful effects of sub-chronic exposure to PM2.5 on the kidney, by investigating histologic and serum alterations in healthy and hypertensive rat models. Mean PM2.5 concentrations during exposures were slightly above the daily WHO standard. Exposed animals showe

Airborne Particulate Matter Induces Nonallergic Eosinophilic Sinonasal Inflammation in Mice.

Exposure to airborne particulate matter (PM) has been linked to aggravation of respiratory symptoms, increased risk of cardiovascular disease, and all-cause mortality. Although the health effects of PM on the lower pulmonary airway have been extensively studied, little is known regarding the impact of chronic PM exposure on the upper sinonasal airway. We sought to test the impact of chronic airborne PM exposure on the upper respiratory system in vivo. Mice were subjected, by inhalation, to concentrated fine (2.5 μm) PM 6 h/d, 5 d/wk, for 16 weeks. Mean airborne fine PM concentration was 60.92

Air pollution particulate matter alters antimycobacterial respiratory epithelium innate immunity.

Inhalation exposure to indoor air pollutants and cigarette smoke increases the risk of developing tuberculosis (TB). Whether exposure to ambient air pollution particulate matter (PM) alters protective human host immune responses against Mycobacterium tuberculosis has been little studied. Here, we examined the effect of PM from Iztapalapa, a municipality of Mexico City, with aerodynamic diameters below 2.5 μm (PM2.5) and 10 μm (PM10) on innate antimycobacterial immune responses in human alveolar type II epithelial cells of the A549 cell line. Exposure to PM2.5 or PM10 deregulated the ability of

Particulate matter, sulfur dioxide, and daily mortality in Chongqing, China.

In 1995, daily mortality in a district of Chongqing, China, was analyzed from January through December for associations with daily ambient sulfur dioxide and fine particles (airborne particles with diameters less than or equal to 2.5 microm; PM2.5. The mean concentration of PM2.5 was 147 microg/m3 (maximum, 666 microg/m3), and that of SO2 was 213 microg/m3 (maximum, 571 microg/m3). On average, 9.6 persons died each day. We used a generalized additive model using robust Poisson regression to estimate the associations of mean daily SO2 and PM2.5 with daily mortality (on the same day and at lags

Efficiency of Respirator Filter Media against Diesel Particulate Matter: A Comparison Study Using Two Diesel Particulate Sources.

Diesel engines have been a mainstay within many industries since the early 1900s. Exposure to diesel particulate matter (DPM) is a major issue in many industrial workplaces given the potential for serious health impacts to exposed workers; including the potential for lung cancer and adverse irritant and cardiovascular effects. Personal respiratory protective devices are an accepted safety measure to mitigate worker exposure against the potentially damaging health impacts of DPM. To be protective, they need to act as effective filters against carbon and other particulates. In Australia, the fil

Leaching dynamics of dissolved organic matter and particulate organic matter in stormwater runoff from floodplain soils.

Organic matter in floodplain soils undergoes complex leaching dynamics during stormwater runoff, directly impacting the water environmental quality of river basin. This study explored the leaching behavior of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and particulate organic matter (POM) in soils from the upper Yellow River floodplain through simulated rainfall experiments. The results showed that DOM and POM were extensively released into the initial rainfall phase (0-20 min), followed by a gradual decline and stabilization in leaching rates. Tryptophan-like substances dominate in the DOM, contributing 4

Experimental study on the nitrogen dioxide and particulate matter emissions from diesel engine retrofitted with particulate oxidation catalyst.

A particulate oxidation catalyst (POC) was employed to perform experiments on the engine test bench to evaluate the effects on the nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and particulate matter (PM) emissions from diesel engine. The engine exhaust was sampled from both upstream and downstream of the POC. The results showed that the POC increased the ratios of NO2/NOx significantly in the middle and high loads, the ratio of NO2/nitrogen oxides (NOx) increased 4.5 times on average under all experiment modes with the POC. An engine exhaust particle sizer (EEPS) was used to study the particle number-weighted size

Disparities in fine particulate matter (PM2.5) monitoring capacity in eastern Canada.

Standards for air pollution are becoming more stringent. Canada will update the annual average fine particulate matter (PM2.5) standard to 8 µg m-3 in 2030, which questions the adequacy of existing PM2.5 monitoring capacity for evaluating potential exceedances and exposure risk at community level. Although PM2.5 monitoring has expanded beyond regulatory monitors to include low-cost sensors, concerns remain regarding inequalities in its effective coverage and thus data representativeness for exposure estimations. Understanding the connections between PM2.5 monitor density, surface exposure, and

Duck House Inhalable Particulate Matter Induces Lung Injury by Activating Ferroptosis.

The particulate matter (PM) generated during poultry farming is characterized by its complex composition and substantial emission levels. However, researches on the respiratory damage caused by poultry house PM and the underlying mechanisms remain limited. In this study, inhalable PM collected from duck houses was administered to experimental mice through inhalation exposure. After 10 days of short-term exposure and 30 days of long-term exposure, mice samples were collected for lung histopathological analysis and inflammatory cytokines detection. The results showed that inhalation of duck hous

Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) induces microRNA-192-5p causing glomerular damage.

An association between air pollution and the incidence of membranous glomerulonephritis (MGN) has been shown in epidemiological studies. However, the causality of this relationship and data on potential pathomechanisms are still missing. Anti-phospholipase A2 receptor (PLA2R1) antibodies, upregulation of microRNA-192-5p, and decreased expression of its podocyte target nephronectin (NPNT) in patients with MGN have been shown, but the trigger for these regulations remained unknown. The current study aimed to assay the possible role of PM2.5 in the pathogenesis of MGN. In this study, we character

Sunlight-Driven Self-Cleaning Ultrafine Particulate Matter Filter with Antibacterial Activity.

Air pollution by particulate matter (PM) and airborne pathogens causes severe health problems in the human body. Presently, popular disposable air filters yield huge waste and have a fatal impact on the environment. Postuse cleaning of air filters also leads to secondary air and water pollution. Here, we report a sunlight-driven self-cleaning PM filter by coupling a full-solar-spectrum-active photocatalyst comprising up-conversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) decorated with semiconductor iron(III) oxide (UCNP@α-Fe2O3) shells stabilized upon graphene functionalized borosilicate fibrous membrane (rGO-B

Therapeutic effects of hederacolchiside A1 on particulate matter-induced pulmonary injury.

Particulate matter (PM) comprises a hazardous mixture of inorganic and organic particles that carry health risks. Inhaling fine PM particles with a diameter of ≤2.5 μm (PM2.5) can promote significant lung damage. Hederacolchiside A1 (HA1) exhibits notable in vivo antitumor effects against various solid tumors. However, our understanding of its therapeutic potential for individuals with PM2.5-induced lung injuries remains limited. Here, we explored the protective properties of HA1 against lung damage caused by PM2.5 exposure. HA1 was administered to the mice 30 min after intratracheal tail vein
