Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) represents a valuable tool for assessing viral circulation at the community level. Human bocavirus (HBoV), a member of the Parvoviridae family with four genotypes (HBoV1-4), has been detected in respiratory and enteric samples, although its environmental epidemiology remains poorly characterized. This study aimed to investigate the presence and diversity of HBoV in wastewater samples from Córdoba, Argentina, during 2020-2021. A total of 84 raw sewage samples collected at the city's wastewater treatment plant were analyzed by nested PCR and sequencing of the

Human bocaviruses (HBoVs) 1⁻4 belong to the Parvoviridae family, and they infect the respiratory or gastrointestinal tracts in children. We investigated the prevalence of HBoV1⁻4 DNAs in the blood and stool samples, and of HBoV1⁻4 IgG and IgM in the plasma samples, of children presenting with acute gastroenteritis (AGE). In addition, we identified HBoV co-infections with the five most frequent gastrointestinal pathogens. A total of 83 paired blood and stool samples were collected from children aged five years or less. Infection markers of HBoV1, 2, or 3 (viral DNA in blood and/or stool and/or

BACKGROUND: Feline chaphamaparvovirus (FChPV) is a parvovirus primarily identified in cats, and more recently detected in dogs—including the first confirmed canine report from China in 2023—suggesting potential cross-species transmission. However, its clinical significance and host adaptation remain unclear. This study investigated FChPV infection in dogs with respiratory and enteric diseases, assessed its genetic diversity, and determined viral localization. RESULTS: A total of 392 dogs were screened for FChPV using conventional PCR, whole-genome sequencing, and in situ hybridization (ISH). F

A new, highly sensitive and specific enzyme immunoassay using oligopeptides as antigen (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay [ELISA] B19-OP) for detecting parvovirus B19-specific immunoglobulin G (IgG) was established. As antigens, B19-specific oligopeptides of 24 and 30 kDa derived from a 196-kDa fusion protein of beta-galactosidase and viral capsid protein (VPI) of B19 after CNBr cleavage and separation by high-pressure liquid chromatography were used. Of 139 serum specimens tested in parallel for anti-B19 IgG by standard ELISA using B19 particles as antigen and by ELISA B19-OP, 73 (52.5%) were

The pathogenesis of the UT-1 strain, a newly isolated rat virus (RV), in juvenile and newborn rats was examined. Intracerebrally (ic) inoculated newborns developed severe pantropic infections resulting in emaciation, stunted growth, diarrhea, dehydration and icterus, and died 13 to 15 days after the inoculation. Newborns inoculated intraperitoneally (ip) developed similar, but milder diseases. The virus replicated in all the organs tested, which was followed by severe viremia. Histopathologically, diffuse vacuolation and necrosis of the hepatocytes were observed in the liver. Juvenile rats ino

Severe chronic anemia, transitory aplastic crisis (TAC), and lethal hydrops fetalis may be due to an infection with parvovirus B19 i.e. the causative agent of erythema infectiosum. 80% of the patients infected with B19 develop clinical symptoms and typically show the picture of erythema infectiosum--as one of our case reports (daughter) is going to illustrate. Part of the cases, however, take a course without the characteristic slapped-face rash; here we frequently find acute arthritis and arthralgia, as well as fever and rubella-like or purpura-like rashes, predominantly on the smaller joints

We report a child with hereditary spherocytosis who developed human parvovirus B19 (HPV B19)-induced transient pancytopenia. Symptoms of acute-phase illness subsided promptly after infusion of gammaglobulin containing HPV B19 antibody. The HPV B19-containing serum on admission inhibited not only erythroid colony growth but also myeloid and megakaryocyte colony growths. The inhibitory effect was abrogated by convalescent-phase serum or gammaglobulin solution containing HPV B19 antibody. These findings suggest that HPV B19-induced inhibition of haematopoiesis may be pathogenetic for transient bo

Two cases of nonimmunologic hydrops fetalis associated with intrauterine human parvovirus B-19 infection are reported. In these cases, hydrops fetalis was diagnosed with ultrasound at 21 and 22 weeks' gestation after 10 or more days of maternal flu-like symptoms. The outcome was stillbirth in one case and neonatal death in the other. In both cases, intrauterine infection by human parvovirus B-19 was confirmed based on two findings: maternal serum positive for human parvovirus B-19 immunoglobulin M (IgM) antibody, and human parvovirus B-19 DNA detected in the fetal organs using Southern blottin

Viral infections were investigated in American black bears (Ursus americanus) from Nevada and northern California with and without idiopathic encephalitis. Metagenomics analyses of tissue pools revealed novel viruses in the genera Circoviridae, Parvoviridae, Anelloviridae, Polyomaviridae, and Papillomaviridae. The circovirus and parvovirus were of particular interest due to their potential importance as pathogens. We characterized the genomes of these viruses and subsequently screened bears by PCR to determine their prevalence. The circovirus (Ursus americanus circovirus, UaCV) was detected at

Human parvovirus B19 (B19V) is a member of the genus Erythrovirus in the family Parvoviridae. In vitro, autonomous B19V replication is limited to human erythroid progenitor cells and in a small number of erythropoietin-dependent human megakaryoblastoid and erythroid leukemic cell lines. Here we report that the failure of B19V DNA replication in nonpermissive 293 cells can be overcome by adenovirus infection. More specifically, the replication of B19V DNA in the 293 cells and the production of infectious progeny virus were made possible by the presence of the adenovirus E2a, E4orf6, and VA RNA

Cryoglobulinaemia is a rare condition characterized by serum immunoglobulins or immunocomplexes which precipitate at temperatures below 37 °C and redissolve on warming. Cryoglobulinaemic vasculitis develops in ~ 15% of patients positive for cryoglobulin serology and is often associated with an underlying infectious, autoimmune or lymphoproliferative disease. We describe a case of cryoglobulinaemic vasculitis, which manifested as purpura and rapidly deteriorating renal function in a patient with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia and coexistent parvovirus infection. This case illustrates the complex

Human parvovirus (HPV) infections have been associated with several clinical syndromes. The virus is the etiologic agent of erythema infectiosum (fifth disease) and the primary cause of aplastic crises in children with sickle cell disease and other hemolytic anemias. Some individuals with an acute symmetric polyarthritis were found to have a recent HPV infection. Although two stillborn infants with proved HPV infections have been identified, the exact relationship among HPV, intrauterine infection, and subsequent fetal damage requires further research.

Two strains of porcine parvovirus (PPV), designated Kresse and NADL-8, were compared for relative virulence in porcine fetuses. Strain Kresse was injected into the amniotic fluid of all fetuses of 1 uterine horn of each of 2 pregnant gilts at 72 days of gestation. Strain NADL-8 was administered similarly to fetuses of 4 other gilts at the same stage of gestation. All gilts were killed and necropsied 35 days later. Selected tissues of all fetuses were tested for infectious virus and viral antigen. Sera from live fetuses were tested for antibody to PPV. These tests confirmed that most fetuses ex

A case is presented of serologically proved parvovirus infection leading to intrauterine death of the hydropic fetus at 20 weeks' gestation. Although serologic studies of the population indicate that 30-50% of women are susceptible to parvovirus infection, the prevalence of parvovirus infection in pregnancy and the consequences of such an infection are not well understood. A review of reported cases in the world literature indicates a high risk to the fetus once the virus crosses the placenta.

B19 parvovirus is the etiologic agent of fifth disease and transient aplastic crisis. In natural infections, B19 antigen and DNA have been detected in sera early in the course of aplastic crisis and only rarely in fifth disease. We have found B19 DNA in circulating cells of infected patients by DNA dot blot with a virus-specific probe: in four of four sickle cell patients with aplastic crisis, in one asymptomatic sibling, and in one normal adult with fifth disease. Only two of the sera showed B19 DNA. High-molecular weight intermediate forms were detected by Southern analysis of DNA extracted

An infectious agent has long been suspected as the cause of aplastic crisis in sickle cell disease, but no specific organism has been implicated. We studied six children with sickle cell disease in whom an aplastic crisis developed, looking for evidence of parvoviruslike virus (SPLV) infection using a new radioimmunoassay. All six patients had conclusive evidence of acute infection with SPLV. We postulated that SPLV is the predominant cause of aplastic crises in patients with hemolytic anemia.

Bats are unique mammals, exhibit distinctive life history traits and have unique immunological approaches to suppression of viral diseases upon infection. High-throughput next-generation sequencing has been used in characterizing the virome of different bat species. The cave nectar bat, Eonycteris spelaea, has a broad geographical range across Southeast Asia, India and southern China, however, little is known about their involvement in virus transmission. Here we investigate the diversity and abundance of viral communities from a colony of Eonycteris spelaea residing in Singapore. Our results

Adeno-associated virus (AAV; genus Dependoparvovirus, family Parvoviridae) was first discovered in 1965 as a contaminant in adenovirus preparations. The AAVs are generally considered non-pathogenic, and they have the ability to attenuate the replication of other more pathogenic viruses, which makes them attractive as potential therapeutics or preventative measures. This study characterized a novel AAV isolated from Muscovy ducks in China. The novel virus (MHH-05-2015) was isolated after propagating a field isolate of the DAdV-3 virus (a type 3 duck adenovirus) in duck embryo fibroblasts. The f

Severe acute respiratory infection (SARI) in children is thought to be mainly caused by infection with various viruses, some of which have been well characterized; however, analyses of respiratory tract viromes among children with SARI versus those without are limited. In this study, nasopharyngeal swabs from children with and without SARI (135 versus 15) were collected in China between 2008 and 2010 and subjected to multiplex metagenomic analyses using a next-generation sequencing platform. The results show that members of the Paramyxoviridae, Coronaviridae, Parvoviridae, Orthomyxoviridae, Pi
