Parvovirus B19: a review.

Infection with parvovirus B19 may result in a wide range of dermatologic manifestations. The specific skin findings include erythema infectiosum and papular purpuric "gloves-and-socks" syndrome. The nonspecific findings include reticular erythema, maculopapular eruptions, and petechiae and purpura, as well as other less frequently described findings. Associations with other dermatologic diseases, such as erythema multiforme and erythema nodosum, also have been described. A role in the pathogenesis of various collagen vascular disorders has been suggested and is under investigation. The diagnos

Human parvovirus infections.

The B19 strain of parvovirus causes several distinct and important clinical diseases in humans. Aplastic crisis in patients with chronic hemolytic anemia, persistent bone marrow depression in immunocompromised individuals, and hydrops fetalis all result from direct infection of hematopoietic cells by the virus. Erythema infectiosum, arthritis, and purpuric vasculitis are postinfectious manifestations of B19 parvovirus infection.

Investigation of Carnivore protoparvovirus 1 and Amdoparvovirus infections in red fox populations of the Italian Dolomites.

Members of the family Parvoviridae are well recognized infectious agents of companion, livestock and wild animals as well, whose relevance on production, health, welfare and conservation is often high. Nevertheless, the knowledge of their epidemiology in wild populations is scarce or fragmentary. In this study, the presence and features of two parvoviruses, Carnivore protoparvovirus 1 and Amdoparvovirus, were evaluated in the red fox population resident in the Dolomites area, Northern Italy, and compared with the scenario of other countries and Italian regions. Six out of 117 spleen samples (5

Cryoglobulinaemia and rapidly deteriorating renal function in chronic lymphocytic leukaemia.

Cryoglobulinaemia is a rare condition characterized by serum immunoglobulins or immunocomplexes which precipitate at temperatures below 37 °C and redissolve on warming. Cryoglobulinaemic vasculitis develops in ~ 15% of patients positive for cryoglobulin serology and is often associated with an underlying infectious, autoimmune or lymphoproliferative disease. We describe a case of cryoglobulinaemic vasculitis, which manifested as purpura and rapidly deteriorating renal function in a patient with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia and coexistent parvovirus infection. This case illustrates the complex

Parvovirus infections in childhood.

Human parvovirus (HPV) infections have been associated with several clinical syndromes. The virus is the etiologic agent of erythema infectiosum (fifth disease) and the primary cause of aplastic crises in children with sickle cell disease and other hemolytic anemias. Some individuals with an acute symmetric polyarthritis were found to have a recent HPV infection. Although two stillborn infants with proved HPV infections have been identified, the exact relationship among HPV, intrauterine infection, and subsequent fetal damage requires further research.

Viral infection including HIV and AIDS.

Viruses have long been considered candidates for infectious etiologic agents or cofactors in the development of rheumatic diseases. The current epidemic of HIV infection and the recognition of "emerging viruses" has focused interest on the possible role of viruses in pathogenesis of diseases without defined etiology. Over the past year, the role of parvovirus B19 in chronic arthropathy was further defined. Additional data added to our understanding of the mechanisms by which rubella virus may cause chronic arthritis. We were reminded of the potential the togaviruses have to cause epidemics of

Reproduction and pathogenesis of short beak and dwarfish syndrome in Cherry Valley Pekin ducks infected with the rescued novel goose parvovirus.

Since the outbreak of short beak and dwarfish syndrome (SBDS) in Cherry Valley Pekin ducks in China, novel goose parvovirus (NGPV) has been isolated. Till now, little is known about the NGPV pathogenesis toward Cherry Valley Pekin ducks. Besides, due to detection of duck circovirus co-infection in SBDS clinical cases, whether sole NGPV infection can reproduce all the typical symptoms of SBDS remains unclear. In this study, based on the NGPV isolate SDJN19, an infectious plasmid clone pJNm containing the entire SDJN19 genome was constructed. Transfection of pJNm in embryonated duck eggs resulte

Effects of astragalus polysaccharide on intestinal inflammatory damage in goslings infected with gosling plague.

1. This study explored the effects of Astragalus membranaceus polysaccharide (APS) on intestinal inflammatory damage of goslings infected with parvovirus ('gosling plague').2. A total of 90 healthy goslings were randomly divided into three groups; control, infected or APS treated, respectively. Goslings in the infection and APS treatment groups were inoculated with 0.3 ml allantoic fluid containing goose parvovirus (ELD50 = 1 × 103/0.3 ml) by intramuscular injection and the control group were injected with saline (0.3 ml) twice a day for 15 days.3. Human bocavirus types 1, 2 and 3 in acute gastroenteritis of childhood.

AIM: Recently identified human bocavirus (HBoV) types 2 and 3 have been associated with acute gastroenteritis in children. We studied 878 stool specimens from children with acute gastroenteritis and 112 controls (43 children with unspecified fever, 33 with respiratory tract infection and 36 healthy children) for known HBoVs. The same specimens were previously studied for rotaviruses, noroviruses, sapoviruses, adenoviruses, coronaviruses and aichivirus. METHODS: HBoVs were detected by PCR and positive amplicons were sequenced to identify HBoV1, HBoV2, HBoV3 and HBoV4. RESULTS: HBoV of any typ

Human parvovirus B19: a new emerging pathogen of inflammatory cardiomyopathy.

The human parvovirus B19 (PVB19), an erythrovirus causing diverse clinical manifestations ranging from asymptomatic or mild to more severe outcomes such as hydrops fetalis, is the only known human pathogenic parvovirus so far. Although enteroviruses have long been considered the most common cause of inflammatory cardiomyopathy, PVB19 is emerging as a important candidate. Recent studies have indicated an association of PVB19 with paediatric and adult inflammatory cardiac disease. However, whether or not PVB19 has an impact on inflammatory cardiomyopathy in adult patients is still unclear. The f

Transient pancytopenia associated with parvovirus infection in paroxysmal nocturnal haemoglobinuria.

A 25 year old woman with a 15-year history of paroxysmal nocturnal haemoglobinuria developed transient pancytopenia following infection with human parvovirus B19. This is the first report of transient pancytopenia in a patient with an acquired haemolytic anaemia due to parvovirus. The possible mechanism of pancytopenia in such a case is discussed.

HIV-driven virome dysbiosis unveils distinct virome features and inter-viral correlations in blood and respiratory niches.

While systemic immune dysregulation is well-documented in HIV infection, its impact on blood and respiratory tract viromes remains poorly understood. This study characterizes HIV-associated alterations in viral communities and examines their clinical relevance. Using viral metagenomics, we compare 203 ART-treated HIV-positive individuals and 120 healthy controls. HIV infection significantly restructures the blood virome, shifting from bacteriophage dominance (96.2% in controls) to eukaryotic virus predominance (69.1%). Increased alpha diversity, significant β-diversity divergence, and heighten

Comparison of the virulence of two isolates of porcine parvovirus in 72-day-old porcine fetuses.

Two strains of porcine parvovirus (PPV), designated Kresse and NADL-8, were compared for relative virulence in porcine fetuses. Strain Kresse was injected into the amniotic fluid of all fetuses of 1 uterine horn of each of 2 pregnant gilts at 72 days of gestation. Strain NADL-8 was administered similarly to fetuses of 4 other gilts at the same stage of gestation. All gilts were killed and necropsied 35 days later. Selected tissues of all fetuses were tested for infectious virus and viral antigen. Sera from live fetuses were tested for antibody to PPV. These tests confirmed that most fetuses ex

Parvovirus infection in pregnancy.

A case is presented of serologically proved parvovirus infection leading to intrauterine death of the hydropic fetus at 20 weeks' gestation. Although serologic studies of the population indicate that 30-50% of women are susceptible to parvovirus infection, the prevalence of parvovirus infection in pregnancy and the consequences of such an infection are not well understood. A review of reported cases in the world literature indicates a high risk to the fetus once the virus crosses the placenta.

B19 parvovirus replicates in circulating cells of acutely infected patients.

B19 parvovirus is the etiologic agent of fifth disease and transient aplastic crisis. In natural infections, B19 antigen and DNA have been detected in sera early in the course of aplastic crisis and only rarely in fifth disease. We have found B19 DNA in circulating cells of infected patients by DNA dot blot with a virus-specific probe: in four of four sickle cell patients with aplastic crisis, in one asymptomatic sibling, and in one normal adult with fifth disease. Only two of the sera showed B19 DNA. High-molecular weight intermediate forms were detected by Southern analysis of DNA extracted

Human serum parvovirus as the cause of aplastic crisis in sickle cell disease.

An infectious agent has long been suspected as the cause of aplastic crisis in sickle cell disease, but no specific organism has been implicated. We studied six children with sickle cell disease in whom an aplastic crisis developed, looking for evidence of parvoviruslike virus (SPLV) infection using a new radioimmunoassay. All six patients had conclusive evidence of acute infection with SPLV. We postulated that SPLV is the predominant cause of aplastic crises in patients with hemolytic anemia.

Structure of Parvovirus B19 Decorated by Fabs from a Human Antibody.

Parvovirus B19, one of the most common human pathogens, is a small DNA virus that belongs to the Parvoviridae As a result of previous infections, antibodies to B19 are present in most adults. B19 has a strong tropism to erythroid progenitor cells and is able to cause a series of medical conditions, including fifth disease, arthritis, myocarditis, hydrops fetalis, and aplastic crisis. No approved vaccine is currently available for B19, and there is a lack of structural characterization of any B19 epitopes. Here we present the first cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) structure of a B19 virus-lik
