Naturally acquired Pasteurella multocida infection in rabbits: clinicopathological aspects.

A cohort of 41 New Zealand White rabbits, 35 to 60 days old, from twelve litters were followed for twelve weeks for development of pasteurellosis. Eleven of 19 rabbits in five litters acquired Pasteurella multocida infection. The incubation period was difficult to determine as P. multocida infection was detected both before and after the onset of rhinitis. The response of rabbits to infection varied from subclinical infection to death from systemic pasteurellosis. Atrophy of the maxilloturbinates of the nares was detected in rabbits with chronic rhinitis associated with P. multocida infection.

Experimental infection of dexamethasone-treated goats with Pasteurella haemolytica A2.

Sixteen goats either subjected to transport stress or without transport stress were treated with dexamethasone for 3 days prior to infection with P. haemolytica serotype A2 intranasally. The transport-stressed and dexamethasone-treated goats in the first group had various degrees of pulmonary lesions and the organism was re-isolated from the nasal cavity, lymph nodes and lungs. None of the goats treated with dexamethasone only were infected with P. haemolytica and had no lesions of pneumonic pasteurellosis. Treatment with dexamethasone alone failed to induce experimental infection by P. haemol

Infection of duck plague carriers with Pasteurella multocida and P. anatipestifer.

Mallards (Anas platyrhynchos platyrhynchos) and white pekin ducks (Anas platyrhynchos domesticus) were infected with duck plague virus and challenged with LD20's of Pasteurella multocida and P. anatipestifer. There was no difference between mortality rates of duck plague-infected ducks and controls, suggesting that these organisms do not act synergistically under the conditions of our experiments. There was a difference of about 500-fold between the LD20 of P. multocida for mallards and that for white pekin ducks, indicating that mallards are much more susceptible to avian cholera than white p

Protection against Pasteurella pneumotropica during infection with Angiostrongylus cantonensis.

Lung infections of specific-pathogen-free rats were studied to determine cross-immunity between infections with Pasteurella pneumotropica and Angiostrongylus cantonensis. Rats were found to have differences in mortality due to pneumonic infections with P pneumotropica and A cantonensis and to coinfections of P pneumotropica and A cantonensis. Single infections of P pneumotropica were not dosage-dependent in their lethality for specific-pathogen-free rats. The mortality of coinfection with P pneumotropica and A cantonensis was significantly lower than that of a monoinfection with P pneumotropic

Coronavirus and Pasteurella infections in bovine shipping fever pneumonia and Evans' criteria for causation.

Respiratory tract infections with viruses and Pasteurella spp. were determined sequentially among 26 cattle that died during two severe epizootics of shipping fever pneumonia. Nasal swab and serum samples were collected prior to onset of the epizootics, during disease progression, and after death, when necropsies were performed and lung samples were collected. Eighteen normal control cattle also were sampled at the beginning of the epizootics as well as at weekly intervals for 4 weeks. Respiratory bovine coronaviruses (RBCV) were isolated from nasal secretions of 21 and 25 cattle before and af

Pasteurella multocida Infection of an Aortic Endograft: A Rare Zoonotic Complication.

Pasteurella multocida is a zoonotic, encapsulated, and gram-negative coccobacillus frequently implicated in soft tissue infections following animal bites, particularly dogs and cats. Invasive infections, including bacteremia and endovascular involvement, are rare and typically occur in immunocompromised or elderly individuals. Vascular graft infections due to P. multocida are rare, with limited cases reported in the literature. We report the case of an 87-year-old man with a history of abdominal aortic aneurysm repair who presented with acute confusion, weakness, and dyspnea. Initial workup re

An Unexpected Cause of Diabetic Foot Ulcer Infection: Pasteurella multocida.

Diabetic foot infection (DFI) is a common complication of diabetes mellitus and a major cause of preventable morbidity and mortality in individuals with diabetes. Superficial DFI can lead to contiguous spread to soft tissue and bone as well as hematogenous spread and sepsis. It frequently involves typical pathogens such as Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, or it may be polymicrobial, involving Gram-negative bacilli and anaerobes. Atypical organisms can also be responsible, especially when environmental exposures are present. We report a rare case of Pasteurella multocida osteom

Pasteurella multocida Infection Presented With Frequent Diarrhea in the Cirrhotic Patient.

A 49-year-old woman with alcoholic cirrhosis who owned a pet cat was brought to the hospital with frequent diarrhea every 30 min for two days. She was treated intensively for septic shock; however, she died on the third day. Pasteurella multocida is known to cause soft tissue infections; however, in immunocompromised individuals, it can cause severe invasive infections. Physicians should consider P. multocida infection when a patient with liver cirrhosis presents in shock following symptoms of enteritis. Clinical decisions should be made considering that this infection is associated with a hig

Pasteurella multocida line infection: a case report and review of literature.

BACKGROUND: There are as many as 300,000 visits to the emergency department in the USA with animal bites every year. The most common infection after cat or dog bite is with Pasteurella Multocida. Many people infected will also have long-term central venous access for dialysis or for other reasons. No prior reports or guidelines exist regarding the management of P. multocida bacteremia due to line infection or bacteremia in the presence of long-term central venous access. We describe the successful treatment of an individual with P. multocida bacteremia secondary to tunnelled line infection man

Comparative pharmacokinetics of danofloxacin in healthy and Pasteurella multocida infected ducks.

Pasteurella multocida (P. multocida) infection causes substantial economic loss in the duck industry. Danofloxacin, a fluoroquinolone solely used in animals, shows good antibacterial activity against P. multocida. In this study, the in vitro pharmacodynamics of danofloxacin against P. multocida was studied. The serum and lung tissue pharmacokinetics of danofloxacin were studied in healthy and P. multocida infected ducks following oral administration of a single dose of 5 mg/kg body weight (b.w.). The MIC, MBC and MPC of danofloxacin against P. multocida (C48-1 ) were 0.25, 1 and 3.2 μg/ml, res

Pasteurella multocida infection in cats: ABCD guidelines on prevention and management.

Pasteurella species are part of the normal oral flora of cats. They are also a common cause of infection in this species and an important zoonotic agent. INFECTION IN CATS: Pasteurella species are commonly isolated from subcutaneous abscesses and pyothorax in cats. They may also cause secondary lower respiratory tract infection and have been associated with spinal empyema and meningoencephalomyelitis. INFECTION IN HUMANS: Disease in humans mainly occurs after a cat bite or scratch, but may also be transmitted via respiratory secretions from cats in close contact with a person. Signs of local i

Postoperative wound infection with Pasteurella multocida from a pet cat.

We summarize an unusual postoperative wound infection that was caused by Pasteurella multocida from a house cat licking the incision in an obese gynecologic oncology patient. A 48-year-old morbidly obese woman had a wound abscess 6 weeks after hysterectomy and panniculectomy for a International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics stage IA grade 1 endometrial cancer. P multocida was cultured from the abscess and the patient was treated with drainage and intravenous antibiotics. Further history revealed that her house cat had licked the wound. P multocida wound infection is a potential compl

Otitis interna as a result of Pasteurella multocida infection in a laboratory woodchuck.

A laboratory woodchuck presented clinically with left-sided torticollis and a purulent exudate within the external auditory meatus of the left ear. Bacterial culture of the exudate resulted in a heavy growth of Pasteurella multocida. Treatment was initiated with topical and systemic antimicrobial compounds. There was no clinical improvement after 72 h of treatment, and euthanasia was elected. Radiographs correlated well with necropsy findings, confirming a diagnosis of otitis media; otitis interna was not confirmed but was suggested by the clinical presentation. To the authors knowledge, this

Systemic infection by Pasteurella canis biotype 1 in newborn puppies.

Pasteurella canis biotype 1, usually associated with the oral cavity of dogs and cats, or with human wound infections following dog bites, was isolated from newborn puppies with a fatal systemic infection. The identity of P. canis was confirmed by arbitrarily primed polymerase chain reaction and the organism was susceptible to all the penicillins, cephalosporins, tetracyclines and fluoroquinolones tested and to most of the aminoglycosides tested. This represents the first report of systemic pasteurellosis caused by P. canis in dogs.

In vivo effect of Pasteurella haemolytica infection on bovine neutrophil morphology.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether characteristic changes in neutrophil morphology caused in vitro by Pasteurella haemolytica leukotoxin (LKT) can be observed in vivo by electron microscopic examination of infected tissue chamber fluids and pneumonic lungs. ANIMALS: 7 mixed-breed beef calves. PROCEDURE: Tissue chambers were implanted subcutaneously in 3 calves and were inoculated with P haemolytica or phosphate-buffered saline solution. Chamber fluid samples, obtained at 8 and 32 hours after inoculation, were examined, using electron microscopy. Experimental pneumonia was induced in an addition

The effect of copper deficiency on the resistance of mice to infection with Pasteurella haemolytica.

Mice adjudged copper deficient on the basis of significantly decreased blood and tissue copper content and superoxide dismutase activity, but generally showing no clinical signs of deficiency, were infected intraperitoneally with Pasteurella haemolytica. In 3 separate experiments the LD50 for deficient animals was significantly depressed below that of copper-sufficient controls. Furthermore, in mice surviving challenge at doses near to the LD50, spleen weights were significantly increased and body temperatures depressed in the copper-deficient animals. These results indicate that subclinical c

Pasteurella infections in a tertiary centre - from cellulitis to multiple-organ failure: Retrospective case series.

The purpose of this article is to review the clinical features of pasteurellosis in a tertiary centre over a period of 4½ years. We have identified eight cases of Pasteurella multocida and one case of Pasteurella canis infection, with a large diversity of clinical pictures and outcomes. All patients were elderly and/or immunocompromised and 55.6% reported animal exposure. Soft tissue infections were the most prevalent (55.6%), followed by pneumonia (22.2%) and sepsis (22.2 %). All isolates were susceptible to beta-lactam antibiotics using in vitro sensitivity testing. The overall mortality was
