Subdural empyema caused by Aggregatibacter segnis: a rare case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Aggregatibacter species are Gram-negative bacteria typically recognized as oral saprophytes in humans, with invasive infections uncommon in immunocompetent individuals. To the best our knowledge, this is the first reported case of subdural empyema attributed to Aggregatibacter segnis (A. segnis). CASE PRESENTATION: A 50-year-old female was transferred to our hospital from a local facility due to headache, fever, and left-sided limb numbness. Initially suspected of subdural hematoma and viral encephalitis, she did not respond well to prior treatment. Cerebral computed tomography an

Effect of Histophilus somni on Heart and Brain Microvascular Endothelial Cells.

Histophilus somni is a pathogenic gram-negative bacterium responsible for pneumonia and septicemia in cattle. Sequelae include infectious thrombotic meningoencephalitis (ITME), myocarditis, arthritis, and abortion. These syndromes are associated with widespread vasculitis and thrombosis, implicating a role for endothelium in pathogenesis. Histopathologic and immunohistochemical investigation of 10 natural cases of bovine H. somni myocarditis and 1 case of ITME revealed intravascular H. somni in large biofilm-like aggregates adherent to the luminal surface of microvascular endothelium. Ultrastr

Pathogenesis of Gallibacterium anatis in a natural infection model fulfils Koch's postulates: 2. Epididymitis and decreased semen quality are the predominant effects in specific pathogen free cockerels.

Pathogenesis of Gallibacterium anatis was investigated in specific pathogen free cockerels. Birds aged 35 weeks were infected intranasally with G. anatis whereas negative controls were left uninfected. Following infection, necropsy, bacteriological and histopathological investigations were performed in birds killed at 3, 7, 10, 28 and 38 days post infection (d.p.i.). Additionally, semen samples were collected twice a week until 5 weeks post infection for quality assessment. No clinical signs and gross pathological lesions were seen throughout the experiment. Bacteriological investigation revea

Identification of Histophilus somni by a nanomaterial optical fiber biosensor assay.

Histophilus somni is an opportunistic pathogen responsible for respiratory and systemic diseases of cattle and sheep. Rapid and accurate detection of H. somni is essential to distinguish H. somni from other potential pathogens for proper control and treatment of infections. Nanomaterial optical fiber biosensors (NOFS) recognize analyte interactions, such as DNA hybridization, with high specificity and sensitivity, and were applied to detect H. somni DNA in culture and clinical samples. An ionic self-assembled multilayer (ISAM) film was fabricated on a long-period grating optical fiber, and a b

Unveiling the Causal Roles of the Oral Microbiome-Host Metabolism-Inflammation Axis in Periodontitis: A Mendelian Randomisation Study.

PURPOSE: Periodontitis is a common chronic inflammatory disease with a complex pathogenesis involving oral microbiota dysbiosis, systemic metabolic disturbances, and inflammatory responses. Although observational studies have suggested close associations between these biological factors and periodontitis, the causal relationships remain unclear. Elucidating the causal roles and interactions of these factors is crucial for effective prevention and treatment of the disease. METHODS: In this study, we utilised large-scale genome-wide association study data and applied a two-sample Mendelian rand

Characterization of an 18,000-molecular-weight outer membrane protein of Haemophilus ducreyi that contains a conserved surface-exposed epitope.

Identification of antigenically conserved surface components of Haemophilus ducreyi may facilitate the development of reagents to diagnose and prevent chancroid. A hybridoma derived from a mouse immunized with nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae produced a monoclonal antibody (MAb), designated 3B9, that bound to 35 of 35 H. ducreyi strains isolated from diverse geographic regions. The MAb 3B9 bound to a non-heat-modifiable H. ducreyi outer membrane protein (OMP) whose apparent molecular weight was 18,000 (the 18K OMP), and the 3B9 epitope did not phase vary at a rate of greater than 10(-3) in H

[Severe purulent and necrotizing glossitis in a fallow deer (Dama dama) due to an infection with the involvement of Mannheimia granulomatis].

Post mortem examination of a young fallow deer (Dama dama) revealed a severe purulent and necrotizing glossitis as well as a multifocal necrotizing and ulcerative rumenitis and typhlitis. The animal was cachectic. Mannheimia (M.) sp. was isolated from the tongue lesions and identified as M. granulomatis by MALDI-TOF MS and 16S rRNA sequencing. Mycosis and BVDV infection were excluded. Few publications are dealing with similar macroscopic findings associated with the isolation of M. granulomatis in cattle and roe deer. Therefore, M. granulomatis should also be taken into consideration when such

Histophilosis Myocarditis and Pericarditis.

Histophilosis is a multisystemic bacterial disease in feedlot cattle causing bronchopneumonia, laryngitis, otitis, pleuritis, myocarditis, pericarditis, endocarditis, polyarthritis, and infectious thrombomeningoencephalitis. In western Canada, the most common forms of the disease are myocarditis and pericarditis, which can cause significant mortality in fall-placed feedlot calves. Diagnosis is made on gross pathologic lesions because there are no known live animal tests with good predictive value. None of the licensed Histophilus somni bacterins on the market have been proven effective in redu

Histophilus somni Surface Proteins.

The pathogen surface is usually the first site of interaction with the host. Histophilus somni was earlier thought to only have an outer membrane on its surface. Now it is known that the surface is composed of many virulence factors, including outer membrane proteins, lipooligosaccharide or endotoxin, a fibrillar network, and an exopolysaccharide. Outer membrane blebs, endotoxin, the fibrillar network, and the exopolysaccharide are also shed from the surface. This review will focus on the surface proteins of this pathogen that may colonize the mucosal surface of ruminants as a commensal or may

Multidrug Resistance of Gallibacterium anatis Biovar Haemolytica Isolated from the Reproductive Tracts of Laying Hens.

Antimicrobial resistance is recognized worldwide as one of the greatest threats to human and animal health and the environment. To evaluate the resistance rate of Gallibacterium anatis biovar haemolytica, which contributes to bacteremia, oophoritis, ovarian follicle degeneration, salpingitis, decreased egg production, and increased mortality in hens, strains isolated from the reproductive tracts of layers were analyzed. The oviducts were taken from three hens from each of 10 flocks manifesting clinical signs related to laying. Twenty-two isolates of G. anatis biovar haemolytica collected from

Development of a new multiplex quantitative PCR for the detection of Glaesserella parasuis, Mycoplasma hyorhinis, and Mycoplasma hyosynoviae.

Glaesserella parasuis, Mycoplasma hyorhinis, and Mycoplasma hyosynoviae are important porcine pathogens responsible for polyserositis, polyarthritis, meningitis, pneumonia, and septicemia causing significant economic losses in the swine industry. A new multiplex quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) was designed on one hand for the detection of G. parasuis and the virulence marker vtaA to distinguish between highly virulent and non-virulent strains. On the other hand, fluorescent probes were established for the detection and identification of both M. hyorhinis and M. hyosynoviae target

Single nucleotide polymorphisms in the bovine Histophilus somni genome; a comparison of new and old isolates.

Histophilus somni, a causative agent of the bovine respiratory disease complex, can also cause a variety of systemic disorders, including bronchopneumonia, myocarditis, pericarditis, arthritis, pleuritis, and infectious thrombotic meningoencephalitis. The purpose of this study was to determine if currently circulating strains differ from those of the 1980s by identifying genomic changes. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and insertion and deletion (INDEL) sites were examined by whole-genome sequencing in 12 samples, 6 old and 6 new. The 31 028 SNP/INDELs recorded were compared against the

A multivalent Mannheimia-Bibersteinia vaccine protects bighorn sheep against Mannheimia haemolytica challenge.

Bighorn sheep (BHS) are more susceptible than domestic sheep (DS) to Mannheimia haemolytica pneumonia. Although both species carry M. haemolytica as a commensal bacterium in the nasopharynx, DS carry mostly leukotoxin (Lkt)-positive strains while BHS carry Lkt-negative strains. Consequently, antibodies to surface antigens and Lkt are present at much higher titers in DS than in BHS. The objective of this study was to determine whether repeated immunization of BHS with multivalent Mannheimia-Bibersteinia vaccine will protect them upon M. haemolytica challenge. Four BHS were vaccinated with a cul
