Spiritual Care During COVID-19: An Exploratory Study of the Experience of Hospital Chaplains in the Amazon Region.

The COVID-19 pandemic brought about a scenario of physical, social, and emotional illness that significantly increased the need for spiritual care, particularly in hospital environments, where individuals were more vulnerable, fragile, and anxious. In this context, the hospital chaplain played a strategic role within the multidisciplinary care team for hospitalized patients, serving as the primary provider of spiritual care. This article presents an experiential report of the role of hospital chaplains in providing spiritual support to the multidisciplinary team, patients, and their families i

The Spiritual and Theological Issues Raised by Stillbirth for Healthcare Chaplains.

The death of a baby is one of the most challenging bereavements for parents and healthcare professionals. This study explores the spiritual and theological issues raised for healthcare chaplains as they minister with parents following perinatal bereavement. Chaplains from 85% of maternity units in the Republic of Ireland participated in this study. Suffering, doubt and presence were the main theological themes raised for chaplains following perinatal death. The process of theological reflection is recommended as a sustaining and necessary tool in perinatal healthcare ministry.

Journey to antenatal care in pastoralist communities of Oromia Regional State, Ethiopia: Human Centered Design (HCD) approach.

BACKGROUND: Maternal mortality is unacceptably high globally, particularly in low-income countries. Even though there is positive progress, utilization of Antenatal Care (ANC) is not at the desired level in Sub-Saharan countries. Countries like Ethiopia are facing unique challenges in ensuring equitable provision of quality service, particularly among disadvantaged communities like pastoralists, where the journey of the woman is shaped by different contextual barriers. This study aims to explore the journey of pregnant women to ANC in pastoralist communities, guided by Human-Centered Design (H

Gender dynamics affecting women's uptake of maternal health service in agrarian and pastoral settings in Ethiopia: a community-based cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Lack of access to essential maternal health service remains a significant public health challenge in low-income countries. Gender dynamics play a critical role in determining women’s access to and use of maternal health services. We assessed the influence of gender dynamics on women’s use of maternal health services in Ethiopia. METHODS: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted using a mixed method in 10 selected districts from the agrarian and pastoral contexts of Ethiopia. Systematic sampling was used to recruit 3,097 women to collect quantitative data using a web-ba

Stopping aggressive treatment or hoping for a miracle: an analysis of spiritual care messages for terminally ill patients using the National Survey of religious leaders.

Religious and spiritual needs are important for seriously ill patients. Conflicting evidence for who provides this care and how it fits into the biomedical context remains. Quantitative analysis of the National Study of Religious Leaders (NSRL) survey data (N = 1600) resulted in three statistically significant logistic regression models. Conflicts with scientific beliefs, openness to changing beliefs based on scientific findings, and race/ethnicity were associated with religious leaders' recommendations related to stopping curative treatment. Multiple factors such as belief in miraculous heali

Case Report: Simultaneous hepatic and renal echinococcosis in a child: a multidisciplinary approach.

INTRODUCTION: Echinococcosis caused by Echinococcus granulosus is a significant public health issue, particularly in pastoral regions. This zoonotic disease is globally distributed and most prevalent in areas with frequent human-livestock interactions. The liver is the most commonly affected organ, followed by the lungs. In children, simultaneous involvement of multiple organs is rare due to immature immune systems and smaller organ sizes. This case highlights the rarity and complexity of simultaneous hepatic and renal echinococcosis in a child. METHODS: A 5-year-old boy from a pastoral regio

Selective pulmonary lobe isolation with Arndt pediatric endobronchial blocker for an infant: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Attaining lung isolation in the infant is a challenge for anesthesia care providers. Pulmonary lobe isolation is more challenging. We describe an approach to performing selective pulmonary lobe isolation using the pediatric endobronchial blocker in an infant in the absence of appropriate auxiliary guidance tool. PATIENT CONCERNS: An 8-month-old and 9.5 kg male infant was admitted because of repeated cough with fever for 3 months and a large cyst of his right lung for 2 weeks. He had been living in a pastoral area with his parents. DIAGNOSIS: Based on the chest computed tomograp

All God's children: religion, divorce, and child custody.

Many young Americans, married and marriageable, are turning to more traditional or fundamentalist religions. Religiosity and ultra-strict morality often leads to attitudes that alter decision-making in marriage, divorce, and the disposition of the children of divorce. Judgmental pastoral counseling may affect these decisions even more. This paper discusses these issues, emphasizing the need for forensic psychiatrists involved in the custody arena to be aware of the religious, spiritual, irreligious, or even anti-religious feelings of the battling partners. It also presents detailed information

Religious perspectives on organ donation.

A donor's or family's religious beliefs are to be ascertained in discussions about organ donation. The positions of the major faith groups about donation are reviewed, leading to the conclusion that the large majority of faiths take a positive stance toward donation. Other factors such as the emotional response, the cultural values, and the spiritual issues may be even more compelling for family members than religious beliefs. Conflicts between one's personal beliefs and the position of one's faith group about donation are to be assessed and processed.

Religious Leaders' Experience of Advance Care Planning and Death-Related Discussions With Korean Americans: A Qualitative Study Identifying Obstacles and Strategies.

Advance care planning is a critical process that allows individuals to articulate their values and preferences for end-of-life care before a medical crisis occurs. This study explored the challenges that religious leaders experience when engaging in advance care planning and death-related conversations with first- and second-generation Korean Americans, and the strategies employed to overcome these challenges. Using a descriptive qualitative study design, interviews were conducted with 12 religious leaders in the United States who provide spiritual/pastoral care to Korean Americans. Analysis r

[Palliative care].

WHO describes palliative care as the approach to patients with incurable illnesses. It covers identification and treatment of pain and other physical symptoms, psychological, social, and spiritual difficulties. A tight cooperation between the family doctor, the hospital (medical clinic with the subspecialists, geriatric and palliative care centre), the Spitex, the social, psychological, and the pastoral workers is needed. The family doctor needs to know much about medication and specific interventions in order to alleviate the patients' symptoms such as pain, breathlessness, cough, difficultie

Referral preferences among the mental health professions.

A questionnaire presenting two clinical cases with questions about a diagnosis, type of treatment, and whether the respondent would treat or refer the person was administered to pastoral counselors, psychologists, social workers, and psychiatrists. Psychiatrists tend to see the most and social workers the least pathology in the cases. Psychiatrists see the least need for a psychometric evaluation, but no difference was found concerning need for a neurological examination. The majority prefer to treat the "neurotic" case, whereas there was an almost equal tendency to refer the "phychotic" case.

A Spring in the Desert: Infertility and Merciful Accompaniment.

The mystery of love as it unfolds in marriage is an adventure filled with wonder and anticipation for what the future holds. Such is the excitement and optimism of the couple embarking on family life by actively trying to conceive a child. For the couple struggling with infertility, however, joyful anticipation can soon devolve into anguish as they realize that their hoped-for children might not come. Though the pain of infertility is a shared experience in marriage, it is to the woman that evaluation, testing, and treatment is often directed. She may experience infertility as an assault on he

Prospective study of palliative care in ALS: choice, timing, outcomes.

To understand palliative care choices among people with ALS, it is important to follow a group of recently diagnosed patients and record when patients reach well-defined palliative care milestones. We began following such a cohort prospectively in 1996, when 121 ALS patients were enrolled from a tertiary care clinic. These patients are assessed every 4 months to determine their experience with ameliorative and palliative care. Domains include adjuvant therapies (e.g. speech therapy), adaptive aids (e.g. wheelchair use, augmentative communication), home health care, PEG placement, pulmonary sup

Barriers to Institutional Delivery Services in Districts With the Lowest Institutional Delivery Coverage in Bhutan.

Bhutan aims to achieve 100% institutional delivery coverage. While evidence indicates improved institutional delivery coverage over the years, coverage in some of the districts is only 49%. This study was aimed at exploring barriers to institutional delivery in three low-coverage districts. In-depth qualitative interviews and six focus group discussions were conducted in December 2015. The analysis was done as per the Braun and Clarke's 6-phase guide to doing thematic analysis. This study sheds light on 15 barriers for institutional deliveries, which include hesitancy to seek health care when
