Patellofemoral joint forces during running are not different between adolescents with and without patellofemoral pain-a cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to determine if adolescents (aged 12-18 years) with patellofemoral pain demonstrate greater peak and cumulative patellofemoral joint forces when compared to asymptomatic adolescents during running. METHODS: Twenty-six adolescents with patellofemoral pain (14 male, 12 female, mean ± standard deviation age: 14.4 ± 1.7 years) and 24 asymptomatic adolescents (13 male, 11 female, mean ± standard deviation age: 14.1 ± 1.6 years) participated in this cross-sectional study. Participants ran on an instrumented treadmill in a traditional athletic shoe while k

Three-Dimensional Printing of the Patellofemoral Joints of Patellar Instability Patients.

Three-dimensional (3D) modeling and printing comprise an important tool for orthopaedic surgeons. One area in which 3D modeling has the potential to dramatically improve our understanding of biomechanical kinematics is pathologies of the patellofemoral joint, in particular trochlear dysplasia. We describe a method for creating 3D printed models of the patellofemoral joint, including computed tomography image acquisition, image segmentation, model creation, and 3D printing. The models created can help surgeons understand and plan surgery for recurrent patellar dislocations.

Biological activity of polyethylene wear debris produced in the patellofemoral joint.

Polyethylene wear is considered a threat to the long-term survival of total knee replacements. The aim of this study was to investigate the contribution that resurfacing the patella makes to wear debris-induced osteolysis following total knee replacement. Ultra-high molecular-weight polyethylene wear particles were isolated from simulator lubricant. Particle shape, size, and volume distributions were recorded allowing the osteolytic potential of the wear debris produced in the patellofemoral joint to be estimated using the concept of specific biological activity and functional biological activ

Quantitative serial assessment of patellofemoral joint osteoarthritis from lateral knee radiographs.

This study describes a new method for patellofemoral joint space measurement on lateral knee radiographs of patients from a case register of knee osteoarthritis (OA). The reproducibility of the technique was tested on 31 lateral radiographs and the validity, accuracy and sensitivity to change were examined in 82 patients (52 female, 30 male, mean age 66.5 years) with anteroposterior and lateral knee radiographs at two time points 3 years apart. The measurements were compared with visual assessments of joint space narrowing, subchondral sclerosis and osteophyte grade previously recorded by an i

Effect of heel height on patellofemoral joint stress during stair descent.

This study aimed to investigate the effect of heel height on patellofemoral joint stress (PFJS) in young women during stair descent. A total of 25 healthy females were recruited. They were instructed to descend a six-step staircase while wearing heeled shoes of different heel heights: flat heel (1 cm), low heel (3 cm), medium heel (5 cm), and high heel (7 cm). Then, PFJS was calculated using kinematic and kinetic data obtained from a biomechanical model of the patellofemoral joint. Compared with the flat heel condition, the high, medium, and low heel conditions resulted in significant increase

Knee-spine syndrome: correlation between sacral inclination and patellofemoral joint pain.

Low back pain is an enormous clinical and public health problem. When we use spinal instrumentation, measurements of spinal and leg alignment in the standing position are thought to be important. Knee joint pain has also become an enormous clinical problem in the increasing elderly population. However, the correlation between spinal alignment, particularly sacral inclination, and knee joint pain is not clear. We examined the correlation between lumbar lordosis, sacral inclination, and patellofemoral joint pain in elderly subjects. Three hundred and ninety-nine people aged 50-85 years were exam

Patellofemoral joint abnormalities in athletes: evaluation by kinematic magnetic resonance imaging.

The patellofemoral joint is one of the most common sources of painful symptoms encountered by athletes and is one of the most frequently injured joints. Patellar incongruency is the primary pathologic condition that affects the patellofemoral joint and has been reported to be associated with patellar subluxation, patellar dislocation, chondromalacia, and arthrosis. The diagnosis of patellofemoral incongruency by physical examination alone is extremely difficult because the clinical signs may stimulate other types of internal derangements of the knee, and there is a high incidence of combined a

The patellofemoral joint: 30 degrees, 60 degrees, and 90 degrees views.

In 70 patients evaluated for abnormality of the patellofemoral (PF) joint, axial radiographs at 30 degrees, 60 degrees (Ficat views) were obtained, with positive studies in 19. The examination technique and the interpretation of the Ficat views are discussed. In selected patients, the examination can yield valuable information not obtainable by other methods about the PF articulation, allowing differentiation of numerous patellar abnormalities from a torn meniscus. Its value in arthrography is also discussed, as well as its usefulness in evaluating chondromalacia and recurrent patellar subluxa

The effects of tibial rotation on the patellofemoral joint: assessment of the changes in in situ strain in the peripatellar retinaculum and the patellofemoral contact pressures and areas.

The objective of this study was to determine the effects of tibial rotation on in situ strain in the peripatellar retinaculum and patellofemoral contact pressures and areas. Patellofemoral joint biomechanics demonstrate a strong correlation with the etiology of patellofemoral disorders, such as chondromalacia, and are significantly influenced by tibial rotation. Six human cadaveric knees were used along with a patellofemoral joint testing jig that permits physiological loading of the knee extensor muscles. Patellofemoral contact pressures and areas were measured with a Fuji pressure-sensitive

Osteochondral Fragment Repair Using Knotless All-Suture Anchor Technique Within Patellofemoral Joint.

BACKGROUND: The optimal technique for fixation of osteochondral fragments sustained after traumatic patellar dislocations remains controversial, with several described techniques in the literature-including screws, pins, anchors, and suture-based techniques. All-suture anchor fixation utilizes a small-caliber unicortical drill hole, minimizing the creation of bony defects and the disruption of healthy cartilage by the fixation construct. INDICATIONS: In this study, we present a male patient with a history of acute left knee pain after a patellar dislocation who was found to have a large osteo

Generalized joint hypermobility, scoliosis, patellofemoral pain, and physical abilities in young dancers.

BACKGROUND: Many young girls with generalized joint hypermobility (GJH) choose to participate in dance because their bodies are suited for this activity. Scoliosis tends to occur often in thin girls, who also are more likely to choose dance. Both anomalies (GJH and scoliosis) may be related to reduced abilities such as diminished strength and insufficient postural balance, with increased risk for musculoskeletal conditions. The main objectives of the present study were to determine the prevalence of dancers with GJH, the prevalence of dancers with scoliosis, and the prevalence of dancers with
