Panic-phobic patients and developmental trauma.

BACKGROUND: Several studies suggest high rates of developmental trauma among adult anxiety disorder patients. We attempted to replicate these findings in patients with panic disorder, agoraphobia, and/or social phobia in comparison with a nonclinical population and to evaluate possible relationship of traumas and phobic subtypes. METHOD: Fifty-one patients with panic disorder with agoraphobia and/or social phobia were assessed for lifetime diagnoses using interviews and rating scales and for developmental trauma by the Life Experience Questionnaire (LEQ). Fifty-one demographically similar non

Life events and depressive disorder reviewed. I. Events as predisposing factors.

I reviewed studies examining the hypothesis that life events that occur during childhood or early adolescence may predispose a person to a depression in adulthood. Of studies that compared the incidence of childhood bereavement or other childhood loss events among depressed patients and controls, the majority found an increased incidence among the depressives. Although discrepant negative findings exist, it seems that the childhood loss of a parent by death generally increases depressive risk by a factor of about 2 or 3. In addition, early loss events also seem to be related to the severity of

Loss of Snord115 mitigates Snord116-driven sleep abnormalities in mouse models of Prader-Willi syndrome.

Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder caused by the loss of paternally expressed genes within the imprinted 15q11-q13 locus, which includes clusters of box C/D small nucleolar RNAs (SNORDs), notably the SNORD115 and SNORD116 gene families. Although SNORD116 deletions have been associated with sleep disturbances in patients and mouse models, the respective contributions of SNORD115 and SNORD116 to sleep regulation remain unclear. Here, we combined polysomnographic recordings and quantitative neuroanatomy to assess sleep-wake architecture, sleep homeostasis, and hypothalam

Does absence matter?: a comparison of three types of father absence in rural Bangladesh.

This paper examines the effects of three different types of father absence on the timing of life history events among women in rural Bangladesh. Age at marriage and age at first birth are compared across women who experienced different father presence/absence conditions as children. Survival analyses show that daughters of fathers who divorced their mothers or deserted their families have consistently younger ages at marriage and first birth than other women. In contrast, daughters whose fathers were labor migrants have consistently older ages at marriage and first birth. Daughters whose fathe

Preterm Delivery in Relation to Neighbourhood-Level Adult Premature Mortality.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the influence of neighbourhood-level adult premature mortality on a woman's risk of preterm delivery (PTD). METHODS: We included 286 872 singleton live birth deliveries in Toronto, Ontario, between 2002 and 2011. The study exposure was neighbourhood premature mortality rate, expressed in quintiles (Q), among adults aged 20 to 49 years living within each of Toronto's 140 neighbourhoods. The primary study outcome was PTD at 24 to 36 weeks' gestation. Logistic regression analysis generated unadjusted ORs, adjusted ORs, and 95% CIs, controlling for maternal age, parity, marit

The role of loss in treatment outcomes of persistent somatization.

The present study examines the effect of loss on treatment outcome in 92 persistently somatizing patients treated in an inpatient program. Patients were divided into one of three groups depending on the form of loss they experienced: early loss (loss of a parent before the age of 17, N = 25); recent loss (bereavement within the last 2 years, N = 21); or no loss (N = 46). The results indicate that patients experiencing an early loss had the poorest treatment outcome. The early loss group was characterized by poorer social adjustment prior to entry into the program compared with the recent loss

The fathers (not the mothers): their importance and influence with infants and young children.

This review is primarily concerned with the behavior and influence of fathers with respect to their infants and children in early childhood as a mediating variable in forms of psychopathology. Three developmental periods are surveyed in relation to what is known of paternal behavior and its influences on the child: pregnancy, infancy, and early childhood. Throughout, it is appreciated that influences may be bidirectional (i.e., father-child and child-father) and that behavior problems in children are usually determined by the coexistence of several factors. The objective here, however, is to e

Parental incarceration and multiple risk experiences: effects on family dynamics and children's delinquency.

Children of incarcerated parents are exposed to factors that place them at risk for delinquency. Few studies have examined the effects of having an incarcerated parent after controlling for other experiences such as contextual risk factors and family processes. Past studies have also not examined effects of recent, but not current, parental incarceration on children. The present study examines an archival dataset, in which children aged 10-14 years and their parents/guardians reported children's risk experiences (e.g., exposure to poverty, parental substance use), family processes (e.g., level

Cultural consonance profiles: A person-centered approach to cultural alignment and violent parenting among mothers of young children in the Dominican Republic.

BACKGROUND: Cultural factors play a complex role in shaping parenting practices. Cultural consonance-the degree to which individuals' lives align with culturally shared expectations-may affect how parents navigate stress and employ violent discipline. This person-centered study examines how cultural consonance profiles relate to violent discipline and other parenting practices among mothers experiencing adversity. METHODS: We employed a person-centered approach with k-means clustering to identify profiles of cultural consonance across six domains (material goods, leisure activities, social su

From Preconception to Postnatal: Parental Risk Factors for Fetal-Infant Growth Faltering in LMICs-a Scoping Review (2020-2025).

PURPOSE: This review aimed to map the association between parental (both maternal and paternal) risk factors, from preconception through the postnatal period, and fetal-infant growth faltering. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This scoping review followed the PRISMA-ScR frameworks to systematically gather and analyze evidence from major databases (PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science). The inclusion criteria encompassed studies involving pregnant women, fetuses, or infants aged 0-24 months, including those diagnosed with fetal or infant growth faltering that examined maternal and/or paternal risk factors,

Role reversals in families of substance misusers: a transgenerational phenomenon.

Fifty adult methadone maintained opiate misusers were seen with their spouse and/or family of origin in outpatient therapy as part of a Veterans Administration Research project supported by NIDA. Family treatment was offered in an attempt to improve and enhance family relationships/social supports and to aid in the decrease or cessation of drug use. In this study, 42 of the 50 patients had parents who were substance misusers. The subjects were evaluated by constructing a Three-Generational Family Tree to define and clarify the nature of problems across the generations. Success or failure was m

Adverse childhood experiences and psychosocial well-being of women who were in foster care as children.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Research has shown that many children in foster care later have psychosocial problems as adults; this is often attributed to cumulative adversities and a lack of supportive caregivers. The risk factors associated with foster care, such as maternal separation and multiple placements, often counteract many protective factors that can ameliorate the effects of childhood adversities. This study assessed the relationship between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and psychosocial well-being in women who were in foster care as children. METHODS: A total of 101 women aged

Pathways to opiate addiction: an evaluation of differing antecedents.

This paper defines and tests a typology of addicts defined through assessment of the sequence of three types of key events: (a) traumatic childhood events such as death of a parent or child abuse; (b) onset of regular delinquent activity; and (c) initiation of illicit drug use. By evaluating the sequence of these events three groups are defined: (a) an initial childhood trauma group; (b) an early delinquency group; and (c) an initial drug use group. Data derived from a sample of treated opiate addicts are used to define and differentiate these three groups.

Adolescents' experiences with uxoricide.

The purpose of this study was to describe the experiences of individuals who survived the loss of one or both parents through parental homicide or homicide/suicide as adolescents. Participants (N = 34) were aged between 12 and 19 years at the time of the death and were aged between 29 and 64 years at the time of the interview. Participants were interviewed twice and asked to tell the story of their lives. Data were analyzed in the hermeneutic phenomenological tradition using a stepwise process of developing categories and then a single complex theme. Common categories of participants' childhoo

Stability and change in health, functional abilities, and behavior problems among adults with and without Down syndrome.

Changes in health, functional abilities, and behavior problems among 150 adults with Down syndrome and 240 adults with mental retardation due to other causes were examined with seven assessments over a 9-year period. Adults were primarily younger than 40, the age at which declines begin to be evident in individuals with Down syndrome. Adults with Down syndrome were advantaged in their functional abilities and lack of behavior problems, comparable in health, and exhibited comparable rates of change on these measures as adults with mental retardation due to other causes. Hyperprolactinaemia as a result of immaturity or regression: the concept of maternal subroutine. A new model of psychoendocrine interactions.

Pathological hyperprolactinaemia (PH) is significantly associated with: (1) paternal deprivation during childhood, (2) depression, (3) non-specific symptoms including obesity and weight gain. The clinical onset of the symptoms often follows pregnancy or a loss. Prolactin is an insulin antagonist which does not promote weight gain. Hyperprolactinaemia and increased metabolic efficiency are parts of a system of interdependent behavioural and metabolic mechanisms necessary for the care of the young. We call this system, which is available as a whole package, maternal subroutine (MS). An important

Attachment in young children with incarcerated fathers.

The present study examined young children's attachment behaviors during paternal incarceration and reported on initial validity of a new measure used to rate children's attachment-related behaviors and emotions during visits in a corrections setting. Seventy-seven children, age 2 to 6 years, and their jailed fathers and current caregivers participated in the home visit portion of the study, whereas 28 of these children participated in the jail visit. The results indicated that 27% of children witnessed the father's crime and 22% of children witnessed the father's arrest, with most children who

Barring progress: The influence of paternal incarceration on families' neighborhood attainment.

A growing body of literature has recognized that incarceration has implications beyond the offender, with detrimental effects reverberating onto families. In this study, we use the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study (N = 3288) to investigate the relationships between paternal incarceration and the neighborhood outcomes of the children of incarcerated fathers and their mothers. Specifically, we examine whether children whose fathers are currently and/or have recently been incarcerated experience more residential instability, live in more socioeconomically disadvantaged neighborhoods, an
